Book excerpt: In this unique and highly entertaining autobiography, Alf Taylor chronicles his life growing up in the infamous New Norcia Mission, north of Perth in the fifties and sixties. At once darkly humorous and achingly tragic, God, The Devil and Me tells of the life and desperation of the young children forced into the care of the Spanish Nuns and Brothers who ran the Mission. Their lives made up of varying degrees of cruelty and punishments, these children were the 'little black devils' that God and religion forgot. Written with an acerbic and brutal wit, Alf intersperses dark childhood memories with a Monty Pythonesque retelling of the Bible, in which Peter is an alcoholic and Judas is a good guy.As a child, underfed, poorly clothed and missing his family, Alf sought refuge in the library in the company of Shakespeare and Michelangelo. He writes with joy about the camaraderie of the boys, their love of sport and their own company, but also notes that many descended into despair upon leaving. Most died early. Alf Taylor is one of the 'lucky ones'.'At once horrific and hilarious, this ''little black devil'' has created a work unique not just in Aboriginal writing, but in Australian literature altogether.' - Dennis Haskell, Australian poet, critic and academic

Book excerpt: A Bridge Between is the first account of the Benedictine women who worked at New Norcia and the first book-length exploration of twentieth-century life in the Western Australian mission town. From the founding of a grand school intended for ‘nativas’, through links to Mexico and Paraguay then Ireland, India and Belgium, as well as to their house in the Kimberley, and a network of villages near Burgos in the north of Spain, this is a complex international history. A Bridge Between gathers a powerful, fragmented story from the margins of the archive, recalling the Aboriginal women who joined the community in the 1950s and the compelling reunion of missionaries and former students in 2001. By tracing the all-but-forgotten story of the community of Benedictine women who were central to the experience of the mission for many Aboriginal families in the twentieth century, this book lays a foundation for further work. This sensitive account of Spanish Benedictine women at an Aboriginal mission in Western Australia is poignant and disturbing. Notable for its ecumenical spirit, depth of research and deep engagement with the subject, A Bridge Between is a model of how religious history, in its broader bearings, can be written. — Graeme Davison, Monash University With great insight and care, A Bridge Between presents a sympathetic but not uncritical history of the lives of individuals who have often been invisible. The story of the nuns at New Norcia is a timely contribution to Australia’s religious history. Given the findings of the Royal Commission, it will be widely read both within and beyond the academy. History is, here, a spiritual discipline, and an exercise in hope and reconciliation. — Laura Rademaker, The Australian National University

Book excerpt: Theophile Berengier, who was born around 1827, was a monk of Solesmes, the Benedictine monastery near Le Mans in north-western France. In 1868, he met Bishop Salvado, who was on his second European tour raising funds and seeking recruits for New Norcia. In 1879, Berengier published his Histoire. This is the first modern translation of Berengier's book and is an important contribution to our understanding of the history of the New Norcia mission and of the Catholic Church in Australia.

This book was released on 2021-05-25 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1901, Abbot Torres initiated a monastery diary to record daily life at New Norcia. These were known as Las Crónicas, or The Chronicles, and they continue to this day almost without interruption, first written in Spanish then in English since the mid 1950s. The resulting entries, written by different people in their own styles, not only record life within the monastery but offer commentary on events unfolding in Western Australia, nationally and globally; they are frequently amusing and surprisingly frank in their observations. The monks who were appointed to write these early chronicles were Fausto Curiel (1901-1904), Iñigo Alcalde (1904-1906) and Enrique Altimira, from September 1906.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roman Rios arrived in New Norcia as a 22 year old monk. He was here for only eleven years and by the time he left he had become the Prior. While he was in New Norcia he wrote a history of the monastery which, until now, has existed only as a typescript. It is an important work, for it follows on earlier historical works by Bishop Salvado, Theophile Berengier and James Flood and brings the historical narrative through the reign of Abbot Torres (1901-1914) into Abbot Catalans time. In 1943, Rios' transcript was improved in respect to English expression by a monk of the monastery, Father William. This edition incorporates Fr William's improvements and expands significantly on the footnotes, bibliographical references and classical and biblical allusions.
