Book excerpt: "Aspects of Huddersfield, the first in the highly successful Aspects series to feature Huddersfield and district, contains a wealth of pinpoint detail of the history of the town. The story of the coming of the ""wireless"" to Moorside Edge, which made Huddersfield the radio centre for Northern England, sits alongside the proceedings of the Manorial Court at the Manor of Honley in the 18th and 19th centuries. A fascinating collection of the Legends of the Colne Valley, sits easily with Early Days in the Mill and the Diary of an Unknown. A tale of courtship in the mid 1920s. While the Chartists went ""The Whole Hog"" in Huddersfield, Mrs Sunderland became the ""Yorkshire Queen of Song"", a feat still recognised in an annual music festival in her name. Aspects of Huddersfield cannot but enthrall both the dedicated researcher and the general reader with an interest in the town and its environs."

Book excerpt: Shortlisted for the Cricket Writers Club 'Book of the Year' 2022 and the Sunday Times Sports Book Awards 'Cricket Book of the Year' 2023 In telling the story of cricket from the bottom up, Different Class demonstrates how the "quintessentially English" game has done more to divide, rather than unite, the English. In 1963, the West Indian Marxist C.L.R. James posed the deceptively benign question: "What do they know of cricket, who only cricket know?" A challenge to the public to re-consider cricket and its meaning by placing the game in its true social, political and economic context, James was, all too subtly, attempting to counter the game’s orthodox history that, he argued, had played a key role in the formation of national culture. As a consequence, he failed, and the history of cricket in England has retained the same stresses and lineaments as it did a century ago — until now. In examining recreational rather than professional (first-class) cricket, Different Class does not simply challenge the widely accepted orthodoxy of English cricket, it demonstrates how the values and belief systems at its heart were, under the guise of amateurism, intentionally developed in order to divide the English along class lines at every level of the game. If the creation of opposing class-based cricket cultures in the North and South of England grew out of this process, the institutional structures developed by those in charge of English cricket continue to discriminate. But, as much as the exclusion of Black and South Asian cricketers from the recreational mainstream is the most obvious example, it is social class that remains the greatest barrier to participation in what used to be the national game.

Book excerpt: **THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER** It will make you laugh and it will make you cry: Felix The Railway Cat is the extraordinary tale of a close-knit community and its amazing bond with a very special cat. 'The global sensation' Daily Telegraph When Felix arrived at Yorkshire's Huddersfield Train Station as an eight-week-old kitten, no one knew just how important this little ball of fluff would become. Although she has a vital job to do as 'Senior Pest Controller', Felix is much more than just an employee of TransPennine Express. Felix changes lives in surprising ways. She is always ready to leap into action and save the day: from bringing a boy with autism out of his shell to providing comfort to a runaway child shivering on the platform one night. So when tragedy hits the team at Huddersfield, it is only Felix who can pull them back together. But a chance friendship with a commuter that she waits for her on the platform every morning finally gives Felix the recognition she deserves, catapulting her to international stardom . . . Book excerpt: The Greatest Escape in the History of Huddersfield Town F.C.(synopsis) the Great Escape of the 1997-8 season for Huddersfield Town has been well documented. Without the enormous efforts from Peter Jackson and Terry Yorath the team would have faced certain relegation. However, now I am proud, pleased and relieved to be in a position to give an account of the Greatest Escape in the history of the club; a monumental milestone in the history of the Terriers. the Great Escape was made possible by efforts on the field, whereas in the Greatest Escape it was the massive contributions of the ones off it that made the vital difference to survival. Find out how close the club was to closure as thousands contributed to saving the Terriers not from relegation but from folding as a club forever; from being robbed of the joy, excitement and intensity that every match day brings.
