Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Florence The present volume is intended to supply a popular history of the Florentine Republic, in such a form that it can also be used as a guide-book. It has been my endeavour, while keeping within the necessary limits of this series of Me val Towns to point out briefly the most salient features in the story of Florence, to tell again the tale of those of her streets and buildings, and indicate those of her artistic treasures, which are either most intimately connected with that story or most beautiful in themselves. Those who know best what an intensely fascinating and many-sided history that of Florence has been, who hare studied most closely the work and characters of those strange and wonderful personalities who have lived within (and, the case of the greatest, died without) her walls, will best appreciate my difficulty in compressing even a portion of all this wealth and profusion into the narrow bounds enjoined by the aim and scope of this book. Much has necessarily been curtailed over which it would have been tempting to linger, much inevitably omitted which the historian could not have passed over, nor the compiler of a guide-book failed to mention. In what I have selected for treatment and what omitted, I have usually let myself be guided by the remembrance of my own needs when I first commenced to visit Florence and to study her arts and history. Book Synopsis Florentine Histories by : Niccolò Machiavelli
Download or read book Florentine Histories written by Niccolò Machiavelli and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ""This translation... of Machiavelli's thoughts on his native city is meant to be less colloquial and closer to the original than the typical translation. This highlights how Machiavelli used words (and thought) differently from us... Machiavelli is too often remembered merely as the realist who took the morality out of `virtue.' As the Histories demonstrate, he was also a gifted writer and historian."-Virginia Quarterly Review. "Banfield and Mansfield's new rendition of the Renaissance humanist's study of Florentine history aims to supply contemporary readers with a literal, exact, and readable version of the original... Machiavelli's concept of history and his purpose in charting the story of Florence and its leading families are thoroughly examined before the translators lead their readers into the substance of the social philosopher's arguments and into a work of literature that once again comes alive."-Booklist" --Contratapa.

Book excerpt: The Renaissance was one of the greatest and most glorious periods in all art, and Florence was its center. From Botticelli to Michelangelo, from superb painting, goldwork, and sculpture to dazzling churches and palaces, no city has achieved greater splendor or produced more brilliant art. The renowned scholar A. Richard Turner presents this popular art in a remarkably fresh and concise manner. In writing both erudite and spirited, he takes readers on a chronological and thematic tour of this extraordinary time and place. Unlike most books on Florence, this one provides a richly detailed context for the making of art, its display, and its meaning.
Book Synopsis Death in Florence by : Paul Strathern
Download or read book Death in Florence written by Paul Strathern and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-08-15 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the end of the fifteenth century, Florence was well established as the home of the Renaissance. As generous patrons to the likes of Botticelli and Michelangelo, the ruling Medici embodied the progressive humanist spirit of the age, and in Lorenzo de' Medici they possessed a diplomat capable of guarding the militarily weak city in a climate of constantly shifting allegiances. In Savonarola, an unprepossessing provincial monk, Lorenzo found his nemesis. Filled with Old Testament fury, Savonarola's sermons reverberated among a disenfranchised population, who preferred medieval Biblical certainties to the philosophical interrogations and intoxicating surface glitter of the Renaissance. The battle between these two men would be a fight to the death, a series of sensational events—invasions, trials by fire, the 'Bonfire of the Vanities', terrible executions and mysterious deaths—featuring a cast of the most important and charismatic Renaissance figures. In an exhilaratingly rich and deeply researched story, Paul Strathern reveals the paradoxes, self-doubts, and political compromises that made the battle for the soul of the Renaissance city one of the most complex and important moments in Western history.
