Agriculture In the 50 States there are nearly billion acres of land. About 80 percent of it, including the forest land, can be used for agriculture. Without conservation measures, large amounts of topsoil and sometimes acres and square miles of land can be lost to the sea. Improperly used, land becomes scarred and barren. In theory, however, the four basic resources of agricultural land - soil, water, grass, and forests - are endlessly renewable. With the means and methods of production based on the knowledge now at hand, land can be used and replenished indefinitely. More than 60 percent of the land area in the 50 States is privately owned. All u.s. Citizens share in the Federal ownership of a third of the Nation's land area. Federally owned land is used for timber, grazing, mineral development, parks, national monuments, wilderness and primitive areas, and other public purposes. National Forests and Grasslands total 186 million acres. The people, through State and local governments, share also in the ownership of about another 5 percent of the land area of the United States. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agriculture in the United States and the Soviet Union This report is designed to compare agricultural conditions and production in the United States and the Soviet Union, utilizing current statistical information. It compares general features of climate, soils, land utilization, capital and labor inputs, and agricultural organization and management. It provides in tabular form a comparison of sown area, yields, and production of a large number of crops, as well as of livestock and livestock products. The statistical data in this study have been computed by analysts in the United States Department of Agriculture unless otherwise noted. Almost all Soviet data have been taken from official Soviet sources; however, these data are converted into U. S. Measurement units. In certain cases U. S. Department of Agriculture (usda) estimates have been substituted for Soviet figures where analysis has shown the Soviet figures to be inconsistent with available information. Sources of information for this report are listed in the back of the report under the heading Literature Cited. These schools have been equipped at the expense of the counties where they are located, but the State aids each school to the extent of a year, to be applied to the running expenses. The course of study in each school extends over two years and is of quite a practical character, including agriculture, wood working, iron work ing, and domestic science, besides local United States history, civil government, and commercial arithmetic. County agricultural schools are also found in Maryland, Michigan, and Mississippi. The statistics for the normal schools have already been given, show ing that over 100 normal schools in the country are giving instruction in agriculture. This instruction is quite different in character in different schools. In some cases there is a regular course by a special instructor who is a graduate of an agricultural college. In other cases the teaching of agriculture has been taken up by the science teacher. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
