Guy de Maupassant was born in 1850 at the Château de Miromesnil, near Dieppe, France. He came from a prosperous family, but when Maupassant was eleven, his mother risked social disgrace by trying to secure a legal separation from her husband. After the split, Maupassant lived with his mother till he was thirteen, and inherited her love of classical literature. In 1880, Maupassant published his first - and, according to many, his best - short story, entitled 'Boule de Suif' ('Ball of Fat'). It was an instant success. He went on to be extremely prolific during the 1880s, working methodically to produce up to four volumes of short fiction every year. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900's and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions.

Book excerpt: Guy de Maupassant's 'Collected Short Stories' is a captivating collection of tales that take readers deep into the heart of 19th-century France. Known for his keen observations of human nature and sharp wit, Maupassant's stories explore themes of class distinctions, societal norms, and the complexities of human relationships. His literary style, characterized by concise prose and vivid imagery, places him among the great French realist writers of his time, such as Flaubert and Zola. Each story in this collection offers a glimpse into the intricacies of French society, while also delving into the universal human experiences that transcend time and place. Guy de Maupassant, a protégé of Gustave Flaubert, drew inspiration for his stories from his own experiences as a civil servant and his observations of French society. His unique ability to depict the nuances of everyday life with a touch of irony and humor sets him apart as a master storyteller of the 19th century. I highly recommend 'Collected Short Stories of Guy de Maupassant' to readers who appreciate thought-provoking tales that offer insight into human nature and societal norms. Maupassant's timeless stories continue to resonate with readers today, making this collection a must-read for those interested in classic French literature and the complexities of the human condition.
