This book was released on 2021-09-07 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Stockholm Conference of 1972 drew the world’s attention to the global environmental crisis, but for people in Sweden the threat was nothing new. Anyone who read the papers or watched the television news was already familiar with the issues. Five years early, in the summer of 1967, the situation was very different. So what happened in between? This book explores the ‘environmental turn’ that took place in Sweden in the late-1960s. This radical change, the realisation that human beings were in the process of destroying their own environment, had major and far-reaching consequences. What was it that opened people’s eyes to the crisis? When did it happen? Who set the ball rolling? These are some of the questions the book addresses, shedding new light on the history of environmentalism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this time of unwillingness, the right kinds of global solutions are needed now more than ever. Climate change is here and intensifying. Anxieties over economic globalization grip many in the fear of change. While these fearful have turned inward into unwillingness, the world's willing are working harder than ever for international and other cooperative solutions. James Bacchus explains why most of the solutions we need must be found in local and regional partnerships of the willing that can be scaled up and linked up worldwide. This can only be achieved within new and enhanced enabling frameworks of global and other international rules that are upheld through the international rule of law. To succeed, these rules and frameworks must for the first time see and treat economy and environment as one. The Willing World explains how best we can build the right legal structure to attain our global goals - and summon and inspire the willingness needed to do it.
Book Synopsis The EU as International Environmental Negotiator by : Dr Tom Delreux
Download or read book The EU as International Environmental Negotiator written by Dr Tom Delreux and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-03-28 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Delreux examines how the EU functions when it participates in international environmental negotiations. In particular, this book looks at the internal EU decision-making process with regard to international negotiations that lead to multilateral environmental agreements. By studying eight such decision-making processes, the book analyses how much negotiation autonomy (or 'discretion') the EU negotiator (the European Commission or the Council Presidency) enjoys vis-à-vis the member states it represents and how this particular degree of discretion can be explained. The book's empirical evidence is based on extensive literature review, primary and semi-confidential document research, as well as interviews with EU decision-makers. It is aimed at a readership interested in EU politics and decision-making, global/multilateral governance, environmental policy science and methodological development of Qualitative Comparative Analysis.

Book Synopsis Final evaluation of “Disposal of persistent organic pollutants and obsolete pesticides in Mozambique” by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Download or read book Final evaluation of “Disposal of persistent organic pollutants and obsolete pesticides in Mozambique” written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2020-02-25 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pesticides have helped control disease and increase crop production for food security. However poor management of pesticides has shown negative impacts human health and the environment, including death and disability among users. Of particular concern are Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) that are highly effective in the control of the insect vectors of malaria and sleeping sickness and locusts. FAO supported by GEF implemented a POPs project in Mozambique to safeguard and dispose existing stocks of obsolete pesticides, as well as working to reduce risk across the pesticide lifecycle at the policy level. The evaluation found that the project was successful in safeguarding POPs, pesticide waste and contaminated containers, and had to deal with a much larger quantity of contaminated soil and obsolete pesticides than initially planned. In the future, the evaluation recommends that the Project Steering Committee with the support of FAO should (i) continue the remediation of highly contaminated sites, (ii) establishment of a sustainable system for managing empty pesticide containers, and (ii) establishment of a national pesticide stock management system. Book Synopsis The Greening of Machiavelli by : Tony Brenton
Download or read book The Greening of Machiavelli written by Tony Brenton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-21 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1994. Environmental issues present a daunting challenge to the international system. The destruction of the tropical rainforest, the Chernobyl explosion and the ozone layer ‘hole’ all underline the transnational nature of environmental threats and the need for states to act together in order to tackle them. How have such environmental issues entered political agendas in different parts of the world and how has that affected national positions? Can governments ever reconcile their own national interests with the international cooperation needed to deal with transboundary issues such as climate change? This book traces the history of international environmental negotiations and regulations and looks at the domestic policies upon which cooperation in the international community depends. It covers some major milestones in recent history, from the Torrey Canyon accident through to the Rio ‘Earth Summit’ and the emergence of the European Community as a major international environmental actor. It also looks at cross-cutting issues such as the role of non-governmental organizations, the environmental impacts of world agriculture and trading arrangements, industry’s attitudes, and the relationship between democracy and environmental protection. It concludes by examining how the international system has adapted, and may adapt further, to deal effectively with environmental problems, and reflects on the implications of this for the future.
