Book excerpt: This paper develops a measure of the component of total wealth derived from the investments made in human development - commonly referred to as human capital - and provides an estimate of the value and composition of Canada's total wealth that includes produced capital, natural capital and human capital. Each of these produces streams of earning that are available to an economy for personal consumption, further investments and support of government programs. The paper focuses on: the sources of human capital growth in Canada; the compositional effect of the aging of the Canadian population on human capital stock; the level of human capital investment and stock relative to physical capital investment and stock; the growth of human capital investment and stock relative to the growth of physical capital investment and stock; and whether the growth and level of human capital investment and stock are sensitive to alternative assumptions adopted for the estimation.--Document.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measuring Human Capital addresses a country’s most important resource: its own people. Bettering human capital benefits individuals and their country and leads to improved sustainability for the future. For many years economists only used Gross Domestic Product (GDP), now acknowledged to be inadequate without supplemental measures, to gauge a country’s overall value. There is now a recognition that many variables contribute to a country’s worth, which make accurate measurement difficult. Looking beyond GDP by focusing on human capital, researchers, policymakers, government officials, and students can understand what elements impact human capital and how they might improve it in order to increase economic growth and well-being. Addresses six major measures of human capital, covering at least 130 countries Describes both monetary and index estimates Includes two monetary measures by the World Bank and the Inclusive Wealth Report by UNEP and the Urban Institute of Kyushu University Includes four index measures by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation of the University of Washington, United Nations Development Programme, World Economic Forum, and World Bank Includes two country chapters, one on China and the other on the United States

Book excerpt: This paper presents a labour income based measure of Canada's human capital stock from 1971 to 1996 based on the completion of education levels and the number of years of working experience. Unlike measures of human capital based on average years of schooling, this measure does not assume that the productivity differential among workers is proportional to the differential in educational attainment. It also strives to capture differences in quality of education as well as the market relevance of different types of education and of working experience. This measure of Canada's human capital stock can be used in endogenous growth models, empirical accounting exercises, as well as in the assessment of labour market issues.

Book excerpt: One theme of this volume is whether the complementarity between technology and human capital is a recent phenomenon, or whether it can be traced through history. Different approaches to human capital as well as technology are applied, and besides historical surveys are total factor productivity and patent data employed. The studies deal with the Iberian peninsula, Scandinavia, and Canada, countries displaying different patterns in the international development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper quantifies the contribution of human capital accumulation to the growth of real gross domestic product (GDP) in Canada. GDP growth is decomposed into contributions from physical capital, hours worked, human capital supplied per hour and total factor productivity. Using a "flat spot" identification strategy, we separately estimate the price and quantity of human capital using wage data from the Labour Force Survey. We find that growth in human capital supplied per hour explains around one-fifth of GDP growth and two-thirds of the Solow residual over the period from 1997 to 2018. While growth in hours worked is expected to slow down in the near future, human capital supplied per hour is expected to continue to be an important driver of GDP growth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You must be aware of the value, potential return and risk of your own human capital (your job, career and what you do for a living as opposed to stocks and bonds or other investment choices) as well as financial capital and investments to plan a secure future. Human capital is the most valuable asset that you will own over your lifecycle. You need to balance all financial decisions with the characteristics of your human capital. The key trends identified in the first edition of the book namely, the decline of Defined Benefit (DB) pension provision, the continued increase in human longevity and the risk of personal inflation, are as relevant today as they were five years ago. The financial crisis has taught us that all types of capital - human, financial and even social - are key to a secure financial future. If your career has "stock-like" growth and risk characteristics, Milevsky helps you balance your "portfolio" by tilting investments towards safer "bonds." If your job is more secure but offers lower financial upside, you'll learn to tilt your investments towards stocks that compensate for your lower earning potential. Either way, Milevsky shows you how to integrate investments, insurance, annuities, and retirement plans to generate the safe and reliable income you'll need. This Edition's updates include: New 2012 data, charts, figures, and references More coverage of incorporating "human capital" into financial planning Advice reflecting the aftermath of the financial crisis Easier, more usable techniques, and less math!
