Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Stochastic Economic Lot Scheduling Problem: Heavy Traffic Analysis of Dynamic Cyclic Policies We consider two queueing control problems that are stochastic versions of the economic lot scheduling problem: a single server processes N customer classes, and completed units enter a finished goods inventory that services exogenous customer demand. Unsatisfied demand is backordered, and each class has its own general service time distribution, renewal demand process, and holding and backordering cost rates. In the first problem, a setup cost is incurred when the server switches class, and the objective is to minimize the long run expected average costs of holding and backordering inventory and incurring setups. The setup cost is replaced by a setup time in the second problem, where the objective is to minimize average holding and backordering costs. In both problems we restrict ourselves to a class of dynamic cyclic policies, where idle periods and lot sizes are state-dependent, but the N classes must be served in a fixed sequence. Under standard heavy traffic conditions, these scheduling problems are approximated by diffusion control problems. The approximating setup cost problem is solved exactly, and the optimal dynamic lot sizing policy is found in closed form. Structural results and an algorithmic procedure are derived for the setup time problem. A computational study is undertaken to compare the proposed policy and several straw policies to the numerically computed optimal policy. Book excerpt: An easy-to-read introduction to the concepts associated with the creation of optimization models for production planning starts off this book. These concepts are then applied to well-known planning models, namely mrp and MRP II. From this foundation, fairly sophisticated models for supply chain management are developed. Another unique feature is that models are developed with an eye toward implementation. In fact, there is a chapter that provides explicit examples of implementation of the basic models using a variety of popular, commercially available modeling languages.

Book excerpt: The book considers the lot-sizing and scheduling problem for flexible flow line production facilities. Flexible flow lines are flow lines with parallel machines on some or all production stages. They can be found in a vast number of industries. A three-phased solution approach is presented that solves the integrated lot-sizing and scheduling problem in a hierarchical manner. The approach is able to handle several important features relevant in industrial practice, such as back-orders and setup carry-over. The developed solution procedures solve practically sized problems in a relatively short amount of time. One of the procedures is based on a novel mixed integer programming (MIP) model, which employs integer variables instead of binary variables. This makes it possible to find (near-)optimal solutions using standard algorithms such as CPLEX. Another procedure uses two nested Genetic Algorithms. An application of the framework in the semiconductor industry is given.

Book excerpt: Foundations of Inventory Management presents a complete treatment of inventory theory and models for use in advanced undergraduate, masters, or PhD courses in Operations research, manufacturing management or Operations management. Coverage is organized into an introductory section, followed by a section focused on predictable supply and demand, and the third section covering stochastic inventory models. Many recent developments related to or impacting inventory such as ERP systems, supply chain management, JIT, and ERP systems are integrated within the text. The text presents inventory as a critical topic for virtually all businesses today and one in which theory and practice are closely linked. Prequisite coursework for students of this text would include basic optimization theory, stochastic processes, and dynamic programming. The text includes examples as well as rigorous assignment problem sets.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents scheduling with a medium- and short-term focus, which makes it possible to capitalize on fleeting market opportunities while simultaneously working to reconcile economic and environmental priorities. It introduces a new mixed-integer approach to hierarchical discrete-time and continuous-time scheduling, combining aspects of production and recycling, forward and reverse logistics as well as emissions trading for multi-stage supply chain networks. Problem-specific variants of relax-and-fix heuristics and genetic algorithms are also proposed. Given its scope, the book provides a range of practical tools and new perspectives for researchers and professionals in the field of supply chain management.
