Book excerpt: Author's abstract: The Stroop task, in which participants identify the font color of a word which names an incongruent color, has long been used to investigate attentional processes; however, there is still debate concerning the source of the effects produced by the task. The semantic competition hypothesis posits that interference results from competing semantic processes associated with the word and color dimensions of the stimulus prior to response selection. The response competition hypothesis posits that interference results from competing responses for articulating the word versus the color dimension at the time of response execution. Sturz, Green, Locker, and Boyer (2013) designed a Delayed Match-to-Sample Stroop task to differentiate between semantic and response based effects. Though the results supported a semantic competition hypothesis, it is still unclear whether the results globally supported semantic interference as the source of the Stroop effect or whether the effect was contextually driven by the DMTS task. In Experiment 1, a sequentially presented MTS task with no retention interval was implemented and the results replicated the findings of Sturz et al. Experiment 2 consisted of a simultaneously presented MTS task, where sample and response options onset concurrently for the duration of the trial. RT’s on incongruent Stroop stimulus trials were significantly longer than neutral or congruent Stroop stimulus trials. Accuracy data indicated asynchronous interference of words on color matching and no interference of color on word matching. Together, these results provide converging evidence consistent with a semantic competition account and inconsistent with a response competition account.

The dominant view that has emerged after 50 years of research on this topic is that an automatic route processes task-irrelevant spatial information, while another, controlled, route supports rule-based response activation. However, in line with recent literature, this issue reports studies that show that what has been considered automatic, is in fact subject to various control processes. Consequently, in order to account successfully for congruency effects, dual-route models should be adapted so that they can account for between- and within-trial modulation of congruency effects. On the other hand, these studies also show that the relationships between stimulus and response representations that give rise to congruency effects are far more complex than considered so far. Therefore, integrative models for (spatial) congruency effects must indicate when (and how) a response will be activated on the basis of irrelevant stimulus information. The present set of papers not only addresses these issues and outlines possible starting points for future research, but also extends beyond spatial congruency to domains such as task-switching, conflict monitoring, priming, attention, dual-tasking and number processing. Most importantly, this special issue explicitly demonstrates the significance of congruency effects for the study of cognitive control in general.

To make good choices, we need to balance the conflicting demands of fast and accurate decision making. After all, hasty decisions often lead to poor choices, but accurate decisions may be useless if they take too long. This notion is intuitive because it reflects a fundamental aspect of cognition: not only do we deliberate over the evidence for decisions, but we can control that deliberative process. This control raises many questions for the study of choice behaviour and executive function. For example, how do we figure out the appropriate balance between speed and accuracy on a given task? How do we impose that balance on our decisions, and what is its neural basis? Researchers have addressed these and related questions for decades, using a variety of methods and offering answers at different levels of abstraction. Given this diverse methodology, our aim is to provide a unified view of the SAT. Extensive analysis of choice behaviour suggests that we make decisions by accumulating evidence until some criterion is reached. Thus, adjusting the criterion controls how long we accumulate evidence and therefore the speed and accuracy of decisions. This simple framework provides the platform for our unified view. In the pages that follow, leading experts in decision neuroscience consider the history of SAT research, strategies for determining the optimal balance between speed and accuracy, conditions under which this seemingly ubiquitous phenomenon breaks down, and the neural mechanisms that may implement the computations of our unifying framework.
