Book Synopsis Introduction to Space Physics by : Margaret G. Kivelson
Download or read book Introduction to Space Physics written by Margaret G. Kivelson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995-04-28 with total page 762 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All aspects of space plasmas in the Solar System are introduced and explored in this text for senior undergraduate and graduate students. Introduction to Space Physics provides a broad, yet selective, treatment of the complex interactions of the ionized gases of the solar terrestrial environment. The book includes extensive discussion of the Sun and solar wind, the magnetized and unmagnetized planets, and the fundamental processes of space plasmas including shocks, plasma waves, ULF waves, wave particle interactions, and auroral processes. The text devotes particular attention to space plasma observations and integrates these with phenomenological and theoretical interpretations. Highly coordinated chapters, written by experts in their fields, combine to provide a comprehensive introduction to space physics. Based on an advanced undergraduate and graduate course presented in the Department of Earth and Space Sciences at the University of California, Los Angeles, the text will be valuable to both students and professionals in the field.

Book Synopsis A Statistical Study of Solar Type-III Bursts and Auroral Kilometric Radiation Onsets by : William Michael Farrell
Download or read book A Statistical Study of Solar Type-III Bursts and Auroral Kilometric Radiation Onsets written by William Michael Farrell and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Simultaneous occurrences of Type-III solar radio bursts and auroral kilometric radiation were observed by Calvert using ISEE-1 spectrograms. He presented evidence suggesting that the incoming Type-III burst stimulates the onset of auroral kilometric radiation. This paper presents a statistical study of the correlation between Type-III bursts and auroral kilometric radiation. A superposed epoch analysis was performed on as many as 186 Type-III events. The Type-III bursts were detected by the ISEE-3 spacecraft on the sunward side of the earth. At the same time the IMP-8 spacecraft was used to detect onsets of kilometric radiation on the nightside of the earth. For each event, the intensities measured by ISEE-3 (Type-III intensities) were subtracted from the intensities measured by IMP-8 (Type III and possible AKR intensities). The resulting intensities for each event were then added to determine if kilometric radiation was preferentially observed following a Type-III burst. This analysis was performed at frequencies of 100 kHz, 178 kHz and 500 kHz. The results of this study show that a statistically significant correlation exists between incoming Type-III bursts from the sun and kilometric radiation from the earth.
Book Synopsis Microphysics of Cosmic Plasmas by : André Balogh
Download or read book Microphysics of Cosmic Plasmas written by André Balogh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-01-15 with total page 631 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents a comprehensive review of physical processes in astrophysical plasmas. This title presents a review of the detailed aspects of the physical processes that underlie the observed properties, structures and dynamics of cosmic plasmas. An assessment of the status of understanding of microscale processes in all astrophysical collisionless plasmas is provided. The topics discussed include turbulence in astrophysical and solar system plasmas as a phenomenological description of their dynamic properties on all scales; observational, theoretical and modelling aspects of collisionless magnetic reconnection; the formation and dynamics of shock waves; and a review and assessment of microprocesses, such as the hierarchy of plasma instabilities, non-local and non-diffusive transport processes and ionisation and radiation processes. In addition, some of the lessons that have been learned from the extensive existing knowledge of laboratory plasmas as applied to astrophysical problems are also covered. This volume is aimed at graduate students and researchers active in the areas of cosmic plasmas and space science. Originally published in Space Science Reviews journal, Vol. 278/2-4, 2013.

Book Synopsis Review of Radio Science by : W. Ross Stone
Download or read book Review of Radio Science written by W. Ross Stone and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2002-08-12 with total page 1028 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A triennial summation of the state of the art in radio science This book is the fourth in the modern series of triennial reviews prepared by the International Union of Radio Science to further communication and understanding of the status and future of radio science, both for those working in the field, and for those who want to know what is of current importance in this area. The International Union of Radio Science, URSI (Union Radio-Scientifique Internationale), has divided the subject of "Radio Science" according to the ten topics of the Scientific Commissions that make up URSI. This volume consists of thirty-eight original, peer-reviewed papers. Each paper provides a critical, in-depth review of–and, in many cases, tutorial on–advances and research that have been of significant importance within the area of interest of the Commissions during the past three to four years. Among the topics covered are: Electromagnetic metrology Fields and waves Signals and systems Electronics and photonics Electromagnetic noise and interference Wave propagation and remote sensing Ionospheric radio and propagation Waves in plasmas Radio astronomy Electromagnetics in biology and medicine With an included CD-ROM of the full book text, allowing the user to do full-text searching of all the papers, the Review of Radio Science: 1999—2002 is a resource of vital importance to anyone working in, or with an interest in, radio science.
Book Synopsis The Sun, the Solar Wind, and the Heliosphere by : Mari Paz Miralles

This book was released on 2011-01-06 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents the state of the art of the science covered by the International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy (IAGA) Division IV: Solar Wind and Interplanetary Field. It contains a collection of contributions by top experts addressing and reviewing a variety of topics included under the umbrella of the division. It covers subjects that extend from the interior of the Sun to the heliopause, and from the study of physical processes in the Sun and the solar wind plasma to space weather forecasts. The book is organized in 6 parts: the solar interior, the solar atmosphere, the heliosphere, heliophysical processes, radio emissions, and coordinated science in the Sun-Earth system. In addition, we highlight some of the results presented during the IAGA Division IV symposia in the 11th Scientific Assembly of IAGA in Sopron, Hungary, on 23-30 August 2009, which was planned simultaneously with this book.
