Book excerpt: This report provides an up-to-date, holistic reference on the state of women in Lebanon against the broader perspective of general development outcomes while taking into consideration the multiple crises the country is facing. The report presents a data-driven analysis of three key dimensions of gender equality: economic opportunities (including livelihoods), human capital accumulation and agency, and includes a discussion of contextual factors related to institutions and the market underpinning all three dimensions. Specific challenges that refugee women and girls face are also covered and, where data is available and relevant, the report discusses the impacts of the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic. Based on the thorough assessment, three priority areas for action to address gender gaps and promote women's empowerment are identified: i) policies & programs: supporting policies and programs that boost women’s employment and entrepreneurship towards a more equal 'future of work' economy, ii) collaboration: engaging with a diverse set of actors to capitalize on momentum for change towards gender equality, and iii) knowledge: unpacking data to strengthen the impacts of reforms and service delivery benefits to women.

Consequently, a dual struggle is necessary, the first for women's equal political and civil rights and the second for women's equal legal rights in relation to personal status law.

Book excerpt: My purpose is to examine the status of Lebanese women in relation to their social, economic, political and family duties and to ascertain how they feel about their roles. Using research and the case study method, I hope to delineate the area and extent of traditionalist influence. Personal testimony as well as other views reflected by the Personal Status Laws, political parties, and male employers will further clarify the definition of women's status, limitations and potential. I will examine, as well, modern legal documents (the UN Charter and the Lebanese Constitution) which encourage changes in women's traditional role. The possibility of lessening the influence of the Personal Status Laws and of a general long-term increase in non-traditionalist factors affecting women's roles will also be examined. Impediments to these developments will be discussed in the literature review section. Although the Lebanese female participates actively in all major fields of society( the influence of the patriarchal society and the preponderance of male authority tend to nullify the effect of any progress in female emancipation. While some progress has been made in bringing women out of the traditionalist ghetto, getting rid of some of these rigid practices will be more difficult because they originate in customary religious practice rather than strictly social indoctrination. The more Lebanese society looks upon women as positive role players, the more obsolete and traditional ideas will lose their force. In other words, intrinsic social change is clearly more effective than revolutionary change induced by women themselves. This thesis will attempt to evaluate the negative forces that obstruct change, either in traditional Lebanese society or in the status of its women. I hope to make clear the roles imposed by the various religious sects on women's participation in the development of their country.

Book excerpt: After fifteen years of reconstruction in a relatively peaceful environment spanning the years 1990 to 2004, Lebanon has experienced successive violent political events resulting from complex entangled internal and external struggles. The Syrian crisis and its political, economic and demographic consequences on Lebanon have increased these tensions. This atlas sheds light on these new challenges and adds new data that complete the analyses already published in the Atlas du Liban. Territoires et société (Atlas of Lebanon. Territories and Society) released in 2007 by the same research team. Some of its components are included in this edition. Beyond the international regional crisis and the population movements, it takes into account Lebanon’s socio-economic dimensions, the environmental issues linked to uncontrolled urbanization and to natural risks, as well as conflicts due to local territorial management. This atlas is the result of a collaborative endeavor between French and Lebanese researchers. It uses a geographical approach that puts in the foreground a spatial analysis of social and natural phenomena. Public sources are scarce in Lebanon, especially at the local scale. They are sometimes less reliable and difficult to access. It is particularly the case for the Lebanese census data, conversely data are abundantly available on the refugees population, which is less known than the population of refugees. International data help compare Lebanon to its neighbors. Thematic data produced by some ministries are helpful to provide a detailed view regarding specific domains. Analyses processed on aerial and satellite images have produced essential data on urbanization and environment. Local thematic fieldwork surveys have provided additional data. The book consists of seven chapters. The first one deals with the territorial state-building seen in the light of regional geopolitics, and emphasizes internal violence and the reemergence of militias and armed groups that fight each other and the state army. Lebanon is once again perceived as a territory divided between multiple allegiances. The second chapter is devoted to the analysis of population dynamics, despite the lack of reliable data whose sources are subject to discussion. It includes analyses of internal population flows, the Lebanese diaspora, and the assessment of Syrian refugees’ influx. The third chapter shows the fragility of the Lebanese economic model. Its dependency on foreign investments and on...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirty years after the end of the civil war, Lebanese women are still struggling for gender equality. This study builds on recent scholarship on women’s activism in the Arab world, in the context of the Arab Spring. It examines how discourses of secularism and equal civil rights have informed the contemporary Lebanese women’s movement in their campaigns for a domestic violence law, women’s nationality rights, a women’s quota in parliament, the reform of personal status law and the recognition of civil marriage. This book argues that women are caught between sect and nation, due to Lebanon’s plural legal system, which makes a division between religious and civil law. While both jurisdictions allocate women relational rights, guided by the logic of patrilineal descent, women’s inequality is central to the reproduction of sectarian difference and patriarchal control within the confessional political system, as a whole.

Book excerpt: Now in paperback for the first time, the Handbook is an academic adaptation of information contained in the Global Report on the Status of Women in News Media, a study commissioned by the International Women's Media Foundation. The book's editor was the principal investigator of the original study. This text draws together the most robust data from that original study, presenting it in 29 chapters on individual nations and three additional theoretical chapters. The book is the most expansive effort to date to consider women's standing in the journalism profession across the world. Contents organize nations in relation to their progress within newsrooms, with those most advanced in gender equality representing diversity in terms of region and national development. Contributing authors are, in most cases, the original researchers for their respective nations in the Global Report study.

Book excerpt: Freedom HouseOs innovative publication WomenOs Rights in the Middle East and North Africa: Progress Amid Resistance analyzes the status of women in the region, with a special focus on the gains and setbacks for womenOs rights since the first edition was released in 2005. The study presents a comparative evaluation of conditions for women in 17 countries and one territory: Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Palestine (Palestinian Authority and Israeli-Occupied Territories), Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. The publication identifies the causes and consequences of gender inequality in the Middle East, and provides concrete recommendations for national and international policymakers and implementers. Freedom House is an independent nongovernmental organization that supports democratic change, monitors freedom, and advocates for democracy and human rights. The project has been embraced as a resource not only by international players like the United Nations and the World Bank, but also by regional womenOs rights organizations, individual activists, scholars, and governments worldwide. WomenOs rights in each country are assessed in five key areas: (1) Nondiscrimination and Access to Justice; (2) Autonomy, Security, and Freedom of the Person; (3) Economic Rights and Equal Opportunity; (4) Political Rights and Civic Voice; and (5) Social and Cultural Rights. The methodology is based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the study results are presented through a set of numerical scores and analytical narrative reports.

Book excerpt: This thesis focuses on the current state of women's rights in Lebanon. Due to gender inequality, wider systems of violence, and institutionalized methods of disenfranchisement such as Lebanese personal status laws and the Kafala system, a sponsorship system for migrant domestic labor, women and children are most vulnerable to violence. Despite these pervasive systems of patriarchal dominance, it has thus far been difficult to fight gender-based violence in Lebanon because the country promotes a superficial appearance of equality. This thesis discusses how the women's rights organization KAFA, meaning "Enough" in Arabic, could ignite a women's movement in a country, like Lebanon, that has experienced limited progress for women and prolonged national violence. My thesis begins with an interview with the Communication Director of KAFA, followed by a discussion of KAFA's different campaign strategies to engage the state apparatus, the public sphere, and the migrant and refugee community. I then illustrate how KAFA implements its campaigns through mass media and other visual culture, incorporating audience responses to these strategies into my discussion. Finally, I analyze these campaigns strategies in relation to each other, focusing on the implications of the audiences' responses. I argue in this thesis that in order for KAFA to launch a women's rights movement under current social and political conditions in KAFA, it must first employ strategic campaigns to confront forms of gender-based violence at the state and community levels, appealing to a wide audience and building support across campaigns. Constructing webs of activist support across campaigns is crucial for combatting patriarchal oppression regarding socioeconomic and nationalist differences that a part of KAFA's audience reproduces in their responses to campaigns. These issues are particularly evident in responses regarding those working under the Kafala system, a form of modern day slavery. KAFA uses these contentious responses, however, as an opportunity to educate and raise awareness, educate, and prevent gender-based violence. KAFA's campaign strategies have led to an increase in volunteers and activists participating in KAFA, which I argue places the organization in a unique place to build a women's rights movement in Lebanon.

Book excerpt: Combining insider and outsider perspectives, Women in Lebanon looks at Christian and Muslim women living together in a multicultural society and facing modernity. While the Arab Spring has begun to draw attention to issues of change, modernity, and women's subjectivity, this manuscript takes a unique approach to examining and describing the Lebanese "alternative modernities" thesis and how it has shaped thinking about the meaning of terms like evolution, progress, development, history, and politics in contemporary Arab thought. The author draws on extensive ethnographic research, as well as her own personal experience.

Chapter one will give a brief overv iew of the status of women in Lebanon as related to the three aforementioned areas and the CEDAW and PFA as the two international documents. Chapter two will discuss the experience of the ILO in ameliorating women's employment conditions. Chapter three relate UNlFEM's mission to advance their human rights. Chapter four will elaborate on the work of the UNESCO in soliciting the educational opportunities. Chapter five will undertake an analysis of the three respective agencies. Finally, chapter six will conclude the thesis by providing both a summary of the work and future prospects for responding to the plight of Lebanese women.--All in all we shall see that despite all the efforts invested by the UN Agencies in hailing the advancement of Lebanese women's place in society, more means need to be employed.

Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2016 in the subject Gender Studies, The American University in Cairo, language: English, abstract: In the following paper I wish to investigate the status of women and their socio-economic conditions during the second civil war. As it was common during that period of time, the war was transferred to the womb of women, and sectarian conflicts during that time and even later usually involved “mudding” the blood of future generations of one sect. Therefore, I wish to examine whether this was the case in Lebanon. In order to do so, I will divide my paper into five sections. The first section of the paper will discuss the socio-economic background of the working class families of different sects in Lebanon. The second section of the paper will investigate the other means that were used during the war to weaken the Other, i.e. the focus will be directed at unarmed forms of violence. The third part of the paper will discuss the effects of the war, and more specifically it will focus on how women perceived, experienced, and the extent to which they were affected by the war. The fourth section will attempt to draw a comparative analysis in which the situation of women in Syria, Lebanon and Palestine, have been affected similarly during different conflicts at different locations and periods. The last part of the paper will attempt to draw some conclusions about the eruption of the war and whether its consequences still cause distress to Lebanese women today.
