Book excerpt: The State of Church Giving through 2009 (21st Edition, October 2011) includes the following: Chapters 1 through 5 update church member giving in the U.S. through 2009. The analyses include church member giving in recession year 2009 and a new analysis of church member giving in recessions, 11 denominations, 1921-1967. Other analyses include congregational support of denominational overseas ministries updated through 2009; a comparison of remittances by foreign-born with native-born church member giving; cost-per-day for various church populations to address evangelism and global needs such as preventing child deaths. Potential giving calculations are presented for all church members in the U.S., and also a specific analysis of Catholic giving in nine archdioceses. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Expenditure Survey 2009 data for cash contributions to charity is analyzed by age, region, and income levels. The special focus chapter considers Jesus Christ¿s statement in Matt. 25:31-46 (parable of the sheep and goats) in light of church member giving patterns. Specifically, the implications for helping the 16 countries making no progress in decreasing the number of child deaths, with 10 of the countries being 84% Christian, are considered. Dynamics affecting church member giving and the level of mission support are reviewed. Some of these dynamics include the temptation of underperformance, and consideration of where the church in the U.S. may be on a commitment spectrum from early Christianity to paganism. Signs of hope are also presented. The appendixes present the data used in the analyses.

Book excerpt: The State of Church Giving through 2015: Understanding the Times is the 27th edition in empty tomb, inc.'s annual series.Chapters update church member giving and membership data in the U.S., including: (1) 1968-2015 data for a composite set of Protestant denominations. (2) 1921-2015 data for 11 denominations. (3) Future trends. (4) Denominational international ministries. support, 2003 through 2015 (5) Cost-per-day for various church populations to address global needs. (6) Potential giving levels for all church members, and specific groups such as Catholics in nine archdioceses. (7) U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Expenditure Survey 2015 data for charitable cash contributions, analyzed by age, region, and income levels. Chapter 8 micro-reviews five major sections of church history, and then explores current issues facing the church. In particular, the challenges of post-World War II affluence for the church are discussed. After briefly considering Augustine's and Luther's interactions with money, present-day church leaders' responses to this affluence are reviewed. The suggested solution is recovery of a larger purpose for the church, a positive agenda for the affluence. Information about closing, in Jesus' name, the "Promise Gap" -- the difference between the under-age-5 mortality rate reduction targets set by world leaders in 1990 and 2000 and actual rates in the 40 countries not on target to meet those goals as of 2015 -- is presented, including detailed tables about the causes of death in each country. Dynamics that could interfere with, and others that could strengthen, the pursuit of this larger purpose are considered.

Book excerpt: OVERVIEW of The State of Church Giving through 2019: Serve God with Money At-Scale or Serve Money Chapters update church member giving and membership data in the U.S. through 2019, the year before the COVID pandemic set in. Analyses include:-- 1968-2019 data for a composite set of denominations: Per member giving was down in current dollars from 2018 to 2019.-- 1921-2019 data for 11 denominations: Once again, in the most recent year, per member giving as a percent of income was lower than in 1921 and in 1933, the depth of the Great Depression.-- Future trends: Membership and giving trends indicate continued decline in coming years.-- Denominational overseas ministries support through 2019: A broad set of churches continued to direct, on average, two cents of each dollar received on overseas missions.-- Cost-per-day for various church populations to address global needs: For example, 1.2 million child deaths could be prevented for 28¢ per day from church members in the U.S.-- Potential Catholic giving in ten archdioceses: Ten archdioceses in the U.S. would have had an additional $110 billion a year from parishioners in 2019, if giving had been at the classic 10% level.-- An analysis of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Consumer Expenditure Survey 2019, and cash contributions to charitable causes: Giving to "church, religious organizations," compared to gifts to "charities and other organizations" and "educational institutions," received the most support whether data was analyzed by age bracket, income level, or region of the country.-- Chapter 8 is the special focus chapter. The subtitle, "Serve God with Money At-Scale or Serve Money," sets the stage for the exploration of a topic that might give insight to the giving and membership trends presented in the first seven chapters. Citing data from Angus Maddison's The World Economy: A Millennial Perspective, the chapter explores the new challenge facing church members in the U.S.: their relationship to money in an unprecedented sea of affluence. Historical church leaders are quoted on the role of money and the church. However, currently the church in the U.S. has not offered a positive agenda for this affluence. The consequences of that lack of vision are explored, with implications for the church and society as a whole. It is suggested that the church in the U.S. is in a unique position to lead its members to help reduce, in Jesus' name, under-5 child deaths occurring from treatable causes, and thereby offer such a positive agenda. Lacking such an ambitious goal of serving God by using money at a scale that matches global need, it is posited that, in light of Jesus' statement recorded in both Matthew 6:24 and Luke 16:13, the alternative is for the church to serve Money.

Book excerpt: Chapter 8 begins a discussion of a theology for the present age of unprecedented affluence in the U.S. by looking at: historical events; current consequences in the absence of such a theology; and possible components to help Christians navigate the tsunami of affluence overwhelming Americans, including church members. As part of the discussion, a strategy for church members to help, in Jesus' name, stop 1 million under-age-5 child deaths is considered. Chapters 1-7 update church member giving and membership data in the U.S. through 2020, the first year of COVID. These chapters include analyses for a composite set of denominations for 1968-2020; giving and membership patterns in a group of 11 denominations for 1921-2020; past and future giving and membership trends for the church in the U.S.; the potential of church members to impact, in Jesus' name, global and domestic need; and giving patterns for all Americans, based on U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Expenditure Survey 2020.

(24th Edition, October 2014) is the most recent report in an annual series. These analyses consider denominational giving data for a set of denominations first analyzed in a study published in 1988. The new report includes the following: Chapters 1 through 5 update church member giving in the U.S. through 2012. The analyses include: review of data for a composite set of denominations from 1968 through 2012 that includes 26.3 million full or confirmed members, and as of 2010, just over 100,000 of the estimated 350,000 religious congregations in the U.S.; church member giving from 1921-2012 for a set of 11 denominations; and giving and membership patterns and trends. Other analyses include congregational support of denominational overseas ministries updated through 2012; cost-per-day for various church populations to address evangelism and global needs such as preventing child deaths; and potential church giving levels where different factors are considered. Potential giving calculations are presented for all church members in the U.S., and also a specific analysis of Catholic giving in nine archdioceses. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Expenditure Survey 2012 data for cash contributions to charity is analyzed by age, region, and income levels. The special focus chapter considers the need for a categorical shift in the way the church in the U.S. understands money. Christian seminaries and intellectuals could have, but have not to date, provided the leadership necessary to help church leaders and members tap their potential in the present age of affluence to increase their sharing of God's love in word and deed, in Jesus' name, with a hurting world. Five realities missed by Christian seminaries and intellectuals are explored. They are: 1) Unrecognized Potential for Good; 2) Pastors are Preaching to the Rich; 3) Money is a Spiritual Power; 4) Bigness and the Illusion of Powerlessness; and 5) Seminaries and Intellectuals Need to Provide Leadership.

Downward trends in church giving and membership, explored in the earlier chapters, can be reversed. Ecclesiastes 3:11 says God has placed eternity in the human heart, but people don't understand. The chapter explores directions people search for understanding, noting Hollywood seems to understand this need better than the church. The church has not but can provide a positive agenda for affluence: Closing, in Jesus' name, the Promise Gap—the difference between: 1) goals set to reduce the global Under-5 Child Mortality Rate (U5MR), and 2) the actual U5MR. Progress tables are included. With an average of 1 million children dying in the Promise Gap each year, the book states, "It's time for the church to stop letting Hollywood have all the good lines."
