Book excerpt: Excerpt from State Normal Magazine, Vol. 10: August, 1906 Now I shall not take any time this morning to try to talk to these teachers regarding the importance of character. I think we have reached the time in this country when it is a direct in sult to stand before a body of young women going out to teach and talk to them to any extent regarding the necessity of char acter. I would just as soon go before a ministerial assembly and tell them they ought to be good as to tell teachers they ought to behave themselves. If there should happen to be in the audience at any time a teacher who does not recognize the importance of character in her work then her conscience 'will be in such a condition that anything that anyone should say could not reach it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The State Normal Magazine, Vol. 10: March, 1906 Special emphasis should be laid on the study Of North Caro lina history in our colleges and universities because, in the first place, nearly all the really competent teachers of this subject are found in these higher institutions Of learning. And then, under the present system, many graduates go out from these institutions and teach the history Of. Their State when they are almost entirely ignorant of the subject, and depend upon the mistaken statements Of historians. Furthermore, every citizen Of North Carolina, whether he intends to teach or not, should have a correct knowledge of the history Of his own State. She knew only too well the fainting spells her husband had when he was tired out and overcome with the cold. She walked quietly to a nail behind the door and took down a heavy shawl. The boy sprang up quickly and cried, I be goin' with you 11a. His mother shook her head and pushed him aside in order to open the door. But snatching up his cap and woolen muffler, Jack followed behind her out into the snow. His mother turned and retraced her steps to the cabin. Opening the door again, she called: Take ker of the children, Granny, and build up the fire. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from State Normal Magazine, Vol. 10: November, 1905 Of his first years nothing is known. By some he is said to have been a native of Granville county, North Carolina, where were many free born negroes. Others, the sons of his old neigh bors in that county, say that he was born in Hayti in about 1763; that in his young manhood he lived in Jamaica, where he became a. Communicant of the Church of England, and that he came to North Carolina in the latter part of the eighteenth century. His name is so plainly English that he was probably a Jamaican, if a West Indian at all. Otherwise one might weave about him a romance founded upon the stirring events which tore Hayti in 179094. There are yet living in Durham county, which was then a part of Granville, men who remember Chavis, and who tell of his visits to the homes of gentlemen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from State Normal Magazine, Vol. 14: November, 1909 The charms of the old world universities are many, whether we consider their setting, so different in the case of Edinburgh and Cambridge, their venerable buildings, their towered and battlemented gateways, their quaint courts and cloisters, their ancient halls, their beautiful chapels, or their libraries and museums filled with precious memorials of' the past. To these we shall have to add, particularly if we are in England, the peculiar loveliness of the grounds found at the rear of the college buildings - their winding, many-bridged streams, their spacious lawns grazed by deer and sheep, their attractive gardens, and most beautiful of all, perhaps, their stately and far-reaching avenues overarched by chestnut, elm and beech. Book excerpt: Excerpt from State Normal Magazine, Vol. 15: December, 1910 Finally, Mr. Dunbar heard of the place, and, full of wild schemes of cultivating rice by irrigation, moved there, bring ing with him his wife and an only daughter, a sensitive, fair haired child of eight years. But he, like all his predecessors, had had to stare blank failure in the face and had managed to eke out but a miserable existence. The loneliness of the situ ation proved too great a strain on the rather feeble health of his wife and she soon succumbed, leaving him bound to the spot that contained her grave. Naturally a stern man, after the death of his wife he lived more and more to himself, and took little heed of his child, save only to provide for her the actual necessities of life. As a child, Elizabeth half feared the gloomy, silent rooms, that gave forth strange, hollow echoes to the sound of her foot steps, and caused her to start with dismay at the sound of her own voice. At such times she took refuge out of doors and forgot herself in the care of the few little violets which, with the help of Uncle Jake, she had managed to protect from the dense, invading army of weeds and briers. But while she feared them, at the same time she had grown to love the old rooms from long association with them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from State Normal Magazine, Vol. 23: October, 1918 Some of her classmates are in charge of Food Conservation, the Junior Red Cross, and other patriotic organizations in their communities. A few of our girls were food demonstration agents and several more were assistant agents. Still others did volunteer stenographic work for the county food administrators. Perhaps the greatest amount of patriotic work was done by one of last years Freshmen, who, assisted by her mother and two sisters, took charge of a large farm and did all the work from preparing the ground to reaping and disposing of the crop. In food conservation, this family went almost to the limit; they used scarcely any wheat, meat, sugar, or butter; preserved and dried quantities of fruit, and bought War Saving Stamps with the returns from the sale of the fruit. All of these girls, who, before the war, would never have dreamed of accomplishing such things, are now enthusiastically and efficiently serving their country in her hour of need. "Dear little hut By the rice fields circled, Cocoanut palms above. I hear the voices of Children singing - That means love, means love." If our best-selves would permit us to paraphrase so lovely a little song, we might, through the simple process of supplanting, create another one, a local song whose appeal to Normal hearts would set the least songful of them a-singing. Our campus encircles it, oak trees and pines wave above it, college girls, nailing it, painting it, building it, sing in and out and 'round about it - our "Dear little hut." Because of the happiest of happy ideas of the college Y. W. C. A., "the hut" began its growth about two weeks prior to the opening of college. "Overalls" transformed those six or eight girls who came back then into carpenterettes; and these alone, preliminary to the work of actual building, cleared of its trees the hut spot in the edge of the park. So when the other Normalites arrived, the hut itself, under workmanship of the girls and two or three Carpenters, had well-nigh attained mature height and breadth. Its woods-brown exterior, its four brick chimneys, and its pillow-piled window seats, foretell hours of genuine comfort. A place to meet and play and rest it is, and as such it fulfills a some twenty-five-years-long need of the college. Seniors, Juniors, Sophomores, Freshmen, Specials - all, may find in the hut a common home. "And that means love, means love." E. E. Time is a priceless possession - an endless chain of years, months, weeks, days, hours and minutes - the one possession that belongs to every one of us in just the same proportion. When we come to college, we have our first opportunity to make real use of this possession. If we are to obtain the most out of college life we must reach out in more than one direction. Our association with the students, our interest in collegiate activities is of just as much importance as the acquisition of knowledge. To be able to reach out in these several directions, we must early learn how to use our time wisely and well. Book excerpt: Excerpt from State Normal Magazine, Vol. 9: October, 1904 June, 1905 The cultured spanlsh-american homes are built of adobe and are of one story, but pen and ink cannot describe their charm. Usually they are constructed on three sides of a court in which are fountains, grass, owers and trees. Now and then is seen the gleam of a marble figure. The fourth side of the court is a wall in which are gates or doors. Formerly these walls were the height of the houses, but the old ones have crumbled and the new ones are low since the homes no longer need defence. The living rooms Open on this court and between the pillars of the cool inner portale the hammock sways and inviting couches or easy chairs tell of the dreamy leisure of these daughters of Castilian kings.
