Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Standard Natural History, Vol. 5: Mammals In the beginning of the third volume of tills series we have a general account of the anatomy and physiology of the branch of Vertebrata; and here, as an introduction to the class of Mammals, we need only to refer very briefly to some of the special diagnostic characters which separate this group from the other divisions of backboned animals. In this account we have intentionally omitted those features which are common to all ertebrates, and all description of physiological phenomena which, as explained in the ordinary school text-books of human physiology, will apply as well to the whole class of mammals as to man. The Mammalia, the highest class of the animal kingdom, is more distinctly marked off from all other groups than are many of the classes considered in the preceding volumes. While there frequently exists a doubt as to the proper boundaries of some of the lower groups, or their relative importance in the scale of perfection, no such hesitancy is felt regarding the limits or the grade of the mammalia. Even within the limits of the class the orders are all well defined, and in most cases their relative rank is pretty well settled. This superiority of the mammalia over all other classes of the animal kingdom does not imply that every organ is more perfect or better adapted to its purpose, or that every individual is really higher; but that when we come to regard the totality of the organization, and the setting apart of portions of the body for some specific purpose, resulting in an increased differention of organs and an increased complexity of the organism, upon which alone the relative rank of animal rests, the higher rank is at once evident. Thus the human eye, far from being the perfect organ described in some works of a teleological tendency, is less perfect than that of the eagle in many respects, and yet no one would think on this account of placing the bird of prey higher than man. Like all vertebrates, the mammals never have more than two pairs of limbs, but with the exception of some of the aquatic forms (whale, etc.), these two pairs are always present, whence the name in frequent use for the class - quadrupeds. The anterior pair of limbs are never absent in the group. Except in a few forms, to be noted below, the body is covered with hair. The mouth is usually armed with teeth. The heart is four-chambered, and the circulation is complete. The blood is warm and contains non-nucleated red corpuscles. The body cavity is divided into two portions by a transverse muscle, the diaphragm, or "midriff," the anterior portion being called the pleural, and the posterior, or abdominal portion, the peritoneal cavity. The young are born alive, and are afterward nourished by milk, secreted by milkglands (mammce), whence the name of the class. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Standard Natural History, Vol. 1 In so far as this is a process of growth, accompanied by the assumption of a defi nite form, it might be compared with the growth of a crystal of salt in brine; but, on closer examination, it turns out to be something very different. For the crystal of salt grows by taking to itself the salt contained in the brine, which is added to its exterior; whereas the plant grows by addition to its interior; and there is not a trace of the characteristic compounds of the plant's body, albumen, gluten, starch, or cellulose, or fat, in the soil, or in the water, or in the air. Yet the plant creates nothing, and therefore the matter of the proteids and amy loids and fats which it contains must be supplied to it, and simply manufactured, or combined in new fashions, in the body of the plant. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural history museums are changing, both because of their own internal development and in response to changes in context. Historically, the aim of collecting from nature was to develop encyclopedic assemblages to satisfy human curiosity and build a basis for taxonomic information. Today, with global biodiversity in rapid decline, there are new reasons to build and maintain collections, while audiences are more diverse, numerous, and technically savvy. Institutions must learn to embrace new technology while retaining the authenticity of their stories and the value placed on their objects. The Future of Natural History Museums begins to develop a cohesive discourse that balances the disparate issues that our institutions will face over the next decades. It disassembles the topic into various key elements and, through commentary and synthesis, explores a cohesive picture of the trajectory of the natural history museum sector. This book contributes to the study of collections, teaching and learning, ethics, and running non-profit businesses and will be of interest to museum and heritage professionals and academics and senior students in Biological Sciences and Museum Studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Zapotec Natural History is an extraordinary book that describe the people of a small town in Mexico and their remarkable knowledge of the natural world in which they live. San Juan Gbëë is a Zapotec Indian community located in the state of Oaxaca, a region of great biological diversity. Eugene S. Hunn is a well-known anthropologist and ethnobiologist who has spent many years working in San Juan Gbëë, studying its residents and their knowledge of the local environment. Here Hunn writes sensitively and respectfully about the rich understanding of local flora and fauna that village inhabitants have acquired and transmitted over many centuries. In this village everyone, young children included, can identify and name hundreds of local plants, animals, and fungi, together with the details of their life cycles, habitat preferences, and functions in the economic, aesthetic, and spiritual lives of the town. Part 1 of this two-part work describes the community, the subsistence farming practices of its residents, the nomenclature and classification of the local biological taxonomy, the use of plants for treating illnesses, and the ritual and decorative roles of flowers. Part 2 is available online, and includes detailed inventories of all plant, animal, and fungal categories recognized by San Juan’s people; a series of indexes; a library of more than 1,200 images illustrating the town’s plants, people, landscapes, and daily activities; and sounds of village life.
