Book excerpt: Unknown enemies-Questionable associates-Loyal friends-Beautiful women-Where will it lead? Nigel James Alasdair thought he had experienced bad days until August 24, 1970. That day ended with assassinations and the next began with decapitations with machetes, followed by car bombs, and ended with a rocket attack on his wife. Not your normal 24 hours. "I can't go to funerals all over the world. Ted, a terrorist didn't have anything to do with that car bomb, it was a message to me. I have now had four messages in one twenty four period. I suppose I am considered too dumb to catch on quickly." Jim Alasdair, following all leads starting from the US Virgin Islands determinedly traces his unknown enemy thru Belize, New Jersey, London, Tennessee, and Mexico. "I will find this evil and rid the world of it personally. I will kill him, I will." Alasdair swears he will with his strange collection or friends, enemies, and beautiful women. But will he?

Book excerpt: Following on the success of the first conference, the Wessex Institute of Technology is convening the Second International Conference on Physical Coastal Processes, Management and Engineering. This book contains papers to be presented at that Conference. Coastal zone dynamics involve distinctive features that stem from both near shore hydrodynamics, and the complex local behaviour of the atmosphere that is affected by the irregularity of the coastal topography and variations in land sea surface roughness and thermal properties. Complex interactions occur between the atmosphere, ocean and land, leading to large temporal and spatial differences in air-sea exchange processes and wind strength and direction. Recreational and tourism demand on coastal areas activities makes increased shore and beach protection necessary. Coastlines are often subjected to direct impact of wind, swell and storm wave activity. Many other physical phenomena, such as tides and associated currents, long waves and storm surges, also affect the dynamic behaviour of the coastal zone. With the increase in extreme events due to climate change, the role of extreme events in changing coastal zones needs to be considered. The International Conference will consider also of these and will cover such topics as: Wave modelling; Wave transformation hydrodynamics; Extreme events and sea level rise; Sea defences; Interaction between coastal defences and processes; Energy recovery; Hydrodynamic forces; Sediment transport and erosion; Pollution and dispersion; Planning and beach design; Coastal geomorphology; Coastal processes and navigation; Coastal processes and GIS; Bio-physical coastal processes; and Great Lakes problems. The book will be of interest to engineers and government officials involved with coastal zone management and development

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year is 1912. The world is reeling from the worldwide Great Depression, which has left every nation on earth reeling financially. During this time, two camps of nations have risen to prominence. The nations of America, France, England, and Russia, despite the economic collapses, have managed to start to pull themselves out of the Great Depression. On the other side is the UMN, the United Monster Nations, comprised of Transylvania (home of the vampires), Luciansburg (home of the werewolves, or Lycans), Covenia (home of the Witches or Wiccans), and Decemus (home of the zombies, or the walking dead). Both groups of nations are weary of one another. The UMN is ruled over with an iron hand by Grand Chancellor Alucard, who has brought to an end the centuries-long war between the monster races and has had the monster clans united in their hatred of mankind. At the outset of our story, the UMN has been on a military buildup for more than ten years now and is planning a massed military assault against the human nations listed above for control of the Earth. Though they preach for peace with America, this is just a clever ruse by Lord Alucard to buy his nations more time to prepare for war. One can only imagine the horrors of a conventional war. Gone are the days of lining up soldiers and having them simply walk into oncoming fire. This is a new century with new ways of warfare. A conventional war could mean the deaths of countless millions of lives, both monster and human.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Second World War over 250 Allied warships from a dozen navies were sent to the bottom by German U-boats. This ground-breaking study provides a detailed analysis of every sinking for which source material survives from both the Allied and the German sides, resulting in detailed treatment of the fate of 110 vessels, with the remainder summarised in an extensive appendix. Uniquely, each entry is built around a specialist translation of the relevant segment of the war diary (log) of the U-boat in question, taken directly from the surviving originals – remarkably, this represents the first large-scale publication of the U-boat war diaries in any language. The book offers a wealth of new information, not only with respect to the circumstances of the sinkings from both the Allied and German perspectives, but also to the technical environment in which they lived as well as the fate of the crews. The entries include background details on the vessels concerned and the men involved, with a selection of rare and carefully chosen photos from archives and collections around the world. Each entry is itself a compelling narrative, but is backed with a list of sources consulted, including documents, published works and websites. A decade in the making, this is probably the most important book on the U-boat war to be published for many a year

Book excerpt: For decades, people living in adjacent communities along the Canada–US border enjoyed close social and economic relationships with their neighbours across the line. The introduction of new security measures during the First World War threatened this way of life by restricting the movement of people and goods across the border. Many Canadians resented the new regulations introduced by their provincial and federal governments, deriding them as “outside influences” that created friction where none had existed before. Engaging the Line examines responses to wartime regulations in several border communities, including Windsor, Ontario; Detroit, Michigan; and White Rock, British Columbia. This book brings to life the repercussions for these communities and offers readers a glimpse at the origins of our modern, highly secured border by tracing the shifting relationship between citizens and the state during wartime.
