Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spiritual Sense of Dante's Divina Commedia To this essay on the spiritual significance of the "Divina Cornmedia" I prefix a few words, interesting only to the few who study works of literature for spiritual insight. Such insight is of very slow growth, and though I cannot be permitted to claim anything more than a very feeble approach to it in the reflections which I bring forward here, yet I know that the theme dignifies the writer, and that the circumstances of a struggle to attain a high object are worthy of mention, even if the success of the struggle is not great. My first reading in Dante began as early as 1858, and continued at intervals for four years, by which time I had completed only the "Inferno," studying it superficially in the original and using Carlyle's translation as a sort of dictionary and general guide to its meaning - perhaps better described in college slang as a "pony" or "crib." I read also the translations of Wright and Cary of the "Purgatorio" and "Paradiso" at this time. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. At thirty-five years of age, in accordance with the saying of the Psalmist, The days of our age are threescore years and ten, ' Ps. Xc. To. Dante was born in 1265, and consequently his conversion, ' which was the turning-point of his spiritual life, and which he ascribes to the effect of his Vision upon him, took place in I 300. This date was a marked one, both in the history of the time, as being the great year of Jubilee, and in Dante's career, since it was the year of his Priorate at Florence. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dante's Divina Commedia: Its Scope and Value Of the result of his inquiry we will trace a brief outline. The subject-matter of the poem is the redemption of sinful man, and his ascent, by grace and repentance, from earth to heaven. Hell puts before us the sinner obdurate and chas tised Purgatory the penitent absolved, and advancing in virtue Paradise the summit gained, and the reward of those who persevere. The idea in its development embraces the whole circle of Catholic theology, demonstrated according to the scholastic method of Dante's time, but expressed in form and language solely his own. Reason and faith, freewill and grace, the State and the Church, and their mutual relations the three kingdoms of nature, grace, and glory, and each in detail - man, sinning, repentant, and triumphantmall these fall within the range of the poet's vision. What that vision shows he recounts and describes as it is seen. In his own complex being, in the problems of the schools and of theology, in the world visible and invisible, mysteries deep and unfathomable arrest his thought; but he rejects as puerile and unworthy any temptation to doubt; where reason fails, he behaves and adores. Nay, the very fact that God is incomprehensible, that His decrees and works are alike inscrutable, is to him a cause not of despondency but of thanksgiving. He delights to prostrate himself, in his ignorance and nothin guess, before his Creator, all wise and all perfect, and then by a single act of love to Span the infinite and be one with his God. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spiritual Message of Dante These lectures 'are published according to the conditions laid down by the Noble Trust. They are not intended as a contribution to the critical study of the Divina Commedia they are rather designed to be illustrative of the principles set out in the Noble Lectures which I gave in 1904. They are simply thoughts on religious experience as exemplified in Dante's poem. They were given without manuscript, and as presented here they are compilations from notes, not written lectures. Some repetition is needful in addresses orally given. Such repetitions are blemishes in the printed lectures; but I could not remove such blemishes without recasting the lectures and altering their character as spoken addresses. Book excerpt: Dante Alighieri was early in recognizing that our age has a problem. His hometown, Florence, was at the epicenter of the move from the medieval world to the modern. He realized that awareness of divine reality was shifting, and that if it were lost, dire consequences would follow. The Divine Comedy was born in a time of troubling transition, which is why it still speaks today. Dante's masterpiece presents a cosmic vision of reality, which he invites his readers to traverse with him. In this narrative retelling and guide, from the gates of hell, up the mountain of purgatory, to the empyrean of paradise, Mark Vernon offers a vivid introduction and interpretation of a book that, 700 years on, continues to open minds and change lives.
