Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons to the Spiritual Man There is no being with whom man stands in such close and important relations as with the invisible God, and yet there is no being with whom he finds it SO difficult to have communication. The earth he can see and touch. His fellow-man he can look in the eye and Speak to. But no man hath seen God at any time. Century after century passes by, and the Highest utters no voice that is audible to the outward ear. Thousands and millions Of human supplications are sent up to Him who dwells in the heavens, but the heavens are not rent, no deity comes down, and no visible Sign is made. The skies are Silent. The impenetrable vail between man's body and God's Spirit is not withdrawn even for an instant. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Divine Life in Man: And Other Sermons Often as any soul comes under the regenerating power of the gospel and is born into the kingdom. This is what is brought out with an almost start ling distinctness in the group of passages standing at the head of this discourse. Man, like God, is per sonal and spiritual. He has the source of his being in God. He has come into life in virtue of the breath Of God in his soul. He has a certain intel lectual and moral likeness to God; and by cultivation and discipline this likeness may be advanced till his thought and will reflect, in some measure, the thought and will of God, and all his movements and desires are in the direction of God. He may yield his whole nature - all his powers and faculties - up to the guid ance of God, and the current of an exalted fellow ship may flow back and forth between his heart and the heart Of God. Having fallen out of this fellow ship, and lost this divine life, through sin, he may yet find it again through faith in the Son of God, who came into the world for the express purpose of renewing men dead in trespasses and sins, and re storing the marred image in which they were made. He may have inward witness that God is his Father, and that he is God's child. He may know and eh joy God. These are general statements covering the case. The further development of the subject will be pro moted best by asking two or three questions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spiritual Man and Other Sermons "Behold, thou shalt call a nation that thou knowest not, and nations which know not thee shall run unto thee, because of the Lord thy God and the Holy One of Israel; for He hath glorified thee." - Isaiah IV. 5. Isaiah, the poet of prophets, was the great patriot of the Jews. Every truest and best patriot must have something of the poet and prophet in him. He must be something of a poet, because he must look below the surface of his country's prosperity or disaster, and see wherein the real soul of her blessings and her sorrows lies. He must be something of a prophet that he may take in all his country's long life, and not be misled by too narrow a study of her present condition. Such a patriot was Christ. He could not be deluded by enormous stores and stately structures so long as the heart of Jerusalem was selfish and corrupt. He could not be satisfied with the peace and quiet of the moment while His ears heard afar off the thunder of the coming storm. It was the poet and the prophet in His soul that loved His city, and so He could upbraid her as no other of her children could. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Spirituality, or the Spiritual Man This little book is a plea for a unified life. It endeavors to analyze, to be sure, but only that some conception of the wholeness of the spiritual life may be seen back of its multiplicity of ex periences. The sermons were preached to that caravan of hearers Which passes, on successive Sunday mornings, before the vision of a preacher in a great city. To teach a comprehensive doctrine under such circumstances is not easy. The demand is for some suggestive allusion, some illuminating phrase, some interpreting principle, that can be caught by the hearer as he passes. Elaborately reasoned truth does not ourish under such condi tions. In submitting the sermons to print the author calls attention to thes, e conditjons, 'hoping they will induce the reader} to. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons to the Spiritual Man This volume is complementary to another, published in 1871, under the title of "Sermons to the Natural Man." In the earlier volume, the author aimed to address the human conscience. In this, he would speak to the Christian heart. The former supposed original and unpardoned sin, and endeavored to produce the consciousness of it. The latter supposes forgiven and indwelling sin, and would aid in the struggle and victory over it. The writer has had evidence, both from this country and from abroad, that theological sermonizing and the close application of truth are not so unwelcome and unpopular, as they are sometimes represented to be. This encourages him to hope that the present volume, which takes a wider range, and brings to view the experiences and aspirations of the regenerate believer, may find a yet larger class of sympathetic readers. At the same time, the author is well aware that both volumes are out of all keeping with some existing tendencies in the religious world. But these tendencies are destined to disappear, whenever the blind guides shall cease to lead the blind, and honest self-knowledge shall take the place of self-flattery and religious delusion. That this will happen, is as certain as that the Holy Spirit has not forsaken the world for which God incarnate died, but will, in His own way, again search and illumine the human soul, as in "the times of refreshing from the presence of the Lord." And even in his own day Elijah seems to have inspired awe and wonder rather than affection. He was a stern, reserved man, who scarcely seemed to feel as other men felt. Not only have we Ahab's startled cry, Hast thou found me, O mine enemy? But even the widow of Zarephath, who had watched for months with wondering eye the prophet's sombre face, exclaimed as she clutched the corpse of her boy, Hast thou come to call my sin to remembrance, and to slay my son? So, too, Obadiah, though supported by a good conscience, still doubted this incomprehensible man. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spirit in Man: Sermons and Selections Horace bushnell was born in 1802 and died in 1876. It is, therefore, now one hundred years since his birth, and twenty-six years since he left this world. It is, perhaps, not more remarkable that a personal influence which had its root in an other century should be still growing and spread ing, than that material of thought produced from thirty to sixty years ago should still have fitness to the thought of to-day, and show equal freshness and vitality. The papers offered in this collection are selected from those left in the care of his wife, and which have lain inert for more than thirty years, with the single exception as to time of that on Inspiration, begun just a year before his death under conditions of feebleness best described by himself in his introduction to it. The title of the book is appropriated from one of his sermons in the volume of Sermons for the New Life (page chosen because he once chose it, and be cause it covers the whole scope of the subjects ih cluded as well as any one title could do. Book excerpt: "For the word of God is living, and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and quick to discover the thoughts and intents of the heart" (Heb. 4:12). The peril of the believer is to confuse the spirit for the soul and the soul for the spirit, and so be deceived into accepting the counterfeit of evil spirits to the unsettling of God's work. The greatest advantage in knowing the difference between spirit and soul is perceiving the latent power of the soul and in understanding its falsification of the power of the Holy Spirit. Such knowledge is not theoretical but practical in helping people to walk in God's way. In this book, Watchman Nee shares his insight on The Latent Power of The Soul, The Christian and Psychic Force, and Spirit Force vs Psychic Force. Nowadays the atmosphere is so charged with the commotion of all kinds of counterfeit that the Lord seems to be calling the Church to come to a higher ground. Today's situation is perilous. May we "prove all things; hold fast that which is good" (1Thes. 5:21)

There are other theories, of course, both Christian and unchristian, spiritual and materialistic; but as this was the assumption, the revelation, of Jesus, let us see what it does when we bring up to it for explanation the main ideas of God which mankind possesses.
