Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spiritual Life, Doctrine and Practice of Christian Perfection Silence is an asset capable of very diverse investment. One may be fond of silence and loneliness because he is stupid, or ignorant; or because he wishes to spite his friends - a sullen silence, grieving those whose happiness depends on his kind words. Perhaps it may be the shyness of a bashful spirit that makes us hold our peace - a form of human respect. But religious solitariness is that prayerful wisdom which finds the soul's best solace in conversing alone with God. "Imagine, in the simplicity of thy heart, that thou art out of the world with God, that thou art already in eternity, separated from the body, and no longer disturbed by the things of earth" - an exhortation of Blessed Albertus Magnus, which needs but a grammatical re setting to become a definition of religious solitude. Let us realize that it is God's plan to sanctify us one by one. Holiness is indeed imparted by the outward medium of the Sacraments, yet it is an inward process. Now, "silence is the conversation of the divinity, the language of the angels, the eloquence of heaven, the art of persuading God." So said de Rance who had known all the joys and all the benefits of speech in his life in the world, and of silence in his life at La Trappe. Trust him with the scales for adjusting their relative value. We cannot conceive of anyone acquiring an intimate love of God, or a deep grief for sin, except he be fond of spiritual retirement. Holy love and holy sorrow are fruit of the tree of solitude. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Practice of Christian and Religious Perfection, Vol. 3 of 3 The matters I have treated of in the first and second volume, regard a religious life in general, but these I now treat of, regard it in particular; and therefore I have entitled this third volume "Practice of Christian and Religious Perfection." - Things are so disposed in it, that they do not only suit all other religious orders as well as our own, but also that they may be very profitable to all secular persons, who aspire to perfection. For, though the first treatise, for example, speaks of the end and institution of our Society in particular, yet it omits not to treat of several general matters; such as good example, zeal for the salvation of souls, diffidence in ourselves, and confidence in God, fraternal correction, manifestation of conscience to our confessor and spiritual father, all which are subjects interesting to every one. And generally all the virtues I treat of, in this last volume, are proper to all sorts of persons; because every one may either embrace and practice them in desire, if the obligation of their state hinders them from observing them in effect; or they may make use of them to resist and overcome the contrary inclinations which nature causes in them. Mr. Fletcher's Practical Application of the Doctrine to Various Classes of Christians In the same sermon I Observed Love is the fulfilling of the law, the end of the commandment.' It is not only the first and great command, but all the command ments in one: 'whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, if there be any virtue, if there be any praise, ' they are all comprised in this one word, love. In this is perfection, and glory, and happiness The royal law of heaven and earth is this, 'thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength.' The one perfect good shall be your one ultimate end. One thing shall ye desire for its own sake, the fruition of Him who is all in all. One happiness shall ye propose to your souls, even a union with Him that made them; the having 'fellowship with the Father and the Son'; the being 'joined to the Lord in one spirit.' One design ye are to pursue to the end of time - the enjoyment of God in time and in eternity. Desire other things so far as they tend to this: love the creature, as it leads to the Creator. But in every step you take, be this the glorious point that terminates your view. Let every affection, and thought, and word, and action, be sub ordinate to this. Whatever ye desire or fear, whatever ye seek or shun, whatever ye think, speak, or do, be it in order to your happiness in God, - the sole end, as well as source, of your being (ibid., pp. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. PREFACE In the ascetical writings of the holy Bishop and Doctor of the Church, St. Alphonsus de Ligouri, there is a characteristic charm and an irresistible attraction. Whoever reads them with the proper dispositions will discover in them an indefinable something that appeals to the heart and stirs it to its very depths. We imagine we see the loving personality of the holy Bishop before us, and hear the words of eternal life from his very lips. According to a beautiful legend, the visitor at the shrine of St. John at Ephesus can hear the pulsations of the Saint's heart enclosed in the tomb. The heart of Alphonsus still throbs in his ascetical writings, where the whole being of the Saint seems enshrined. Little wonder therefore that the reverence and love entertained towards him in life should have passed to his edifying works, the reflex of his very self. There are few ascetical writers more widely known and more sincerely loved than St. Alphonsus. The present volume is made up of choice selections from the various ascetical writings of the Saint. The order of virtues considered is that followed by the spiritual sons of St. Alphonsus in the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer. For each month of the year is assigned a particular virtue to which they are to devote their especial attention. This is a practice highly recommended by the masters of the spiritual life, and is fraught with the happiest results. It is hoped that the faithful will derive spiritual profit and pleasure from this course in "The School of Christian Perfection." C. J. W. ST. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is not written for any special class of persons. On this account, anything which would lead to the idea that it is a book exclusively for religious, is sedulously avoided. The principles laid down in it are only those that every good Christian, whether in religion or in the world, ought to know and to live up to. There are numbers of persons in the world who practise Perfection withou t any formal aim at it. It is for these especially that we write j as it appears to us that a little direction, and study of the grounds of Perfection, would be a wonderful help to them. Man's object in life is shown to consist in Charityin the love of God and the love of our neighbour. We have thought it very important to keep this point before the minds of our readers, because otherwise their devotions may be misdirected. We next deal with the various means of attaining to this end. The writer has made every effort to put things as briefly and as plainly as possible so that his teaching may be within the reach of the ordinary mind. He has avoided all digressions and has set before his readers their main business in life, telling them what they must do, rather than what they must not do. His plan did not permit him when treating of the virtues to treat of the opposite vices. With slight alterations the opening Chapters are taken for the most part from Father Scaramelli's Guide to the Spiritual Life, and the closing Chapters from the Christian and Religious Perfection of Father Rodriguez, This course is adopted because the writer believes that nothing better can be said on the subject than has been said by these two masters of the Spiritual Life. Their works cannot be too highly praised. They are excellent, and should be better known and studied, The Chapters on the Virtues are a summary of St. Thomas's teaching. To treat them at length is outside the scope of the present work, The desire of the writer is to promote the glory of God, and the spiritual advancement of Christians, so that they may be helped along the path of Perfection to their heavenly country.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Practice of Christian Perfection: From Rodriguez, and Other Catholic Authors The affair of christian perfection is not to be carried on by constraint; it is the heart that must undertake it: 'if thou wilt be perfect, - come, follow me, ' said our Lord to the man who had kept the commandments from his youth, and asked what was yet wanting to him;2 teaching us, by this answer, that an ardent desire of perfection is necessary to its attainment. WHAT I purpose in the following pages is, to give a plain and distinct account of the steps by which I was led, during the course of many years, to embrace the doctrine of Christian Perfection. This I owe to the serious part of mankind; those who desire to know all the truth as it is in Jesus. And these only are concerned with questions of this kind. To these I would nakedly declare the thing as it is, endeavoring all along to show, from one period to another, both what I thought, and why I thought so."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book John Wesley, founder of the Methodist Church, discusses the Christian doctrine in a manner that is accessible, with characteristic wisdom and clarity. The doctrine of perfect love, as it translates into the life and being of the believer, is the principle topic at hand. Christian Perfection is the name which Wesley gives to the achievement of greater closeness with God and his teachings; this gradual advancement of belief, itself entailing the deepening of one's relationship with the divine, is something which both fascinated and enveloped Wesley. This book has some autobiographical overtones, since Wesley advances through the years of his life and identifies major turning points or landmarks on his own spiritual journey. By stages, he embraced the doctrine of advancing his faith, to the point where he felt obliged to offer his journey as an example to other Christians also seeking greater spiritual growth. A Plain Account of Christian Perfection is a fine foundation to the study of the Christian theology and the Bible. Wesley is careful to quote scripture to support certain views - such as those involving the love of oneself, others and the Lord - and in keeping with his style intersperses his own poetry with the explanations. A distinguished author, preacher and cleric in 18th century England, John Wesley created a deep and abiding body of work which remains emblematic of Christian thought of his era. He is most remembered today for his role in founding Methodism, and his scholarship which continues to hold an influential place in theological study.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Principles and Practices, of the Spiritual Life Must begin as they are, with their many sins and imperfections and ignorances, and work on towards an end that becomes clearer as they advance, and yet ever more difficult of attain ment. Indeed, they have to work towards an end which at first they cannot see, for only as the eye of the soul becomes purified does it get to see clearly what holiness means, and how imperfect were its first conceptions of it. It is a good thing, therefore, to concentrate our efforts, to be definite in our aim, to set before ourselves clearly some one purpose, some special virtue to strive after, upon the attainment of which we shall have advanced considerably towards holi ness of life.
