Book excerpt: Taking as the determinative concept Jesus' favourite name for God, Father, John interprets the ideal relationship of men to God as that of spiritual children, having the Life - eternal - from the Father. According to Jn this life of sonship to God, having a definite beginning other than the physical birth, and being manifested in very definite moral and spiritual qualities, defines the very being of a Christian. It is in the measure that one understands clearly, experiences personally and expounds persuasively this truth of Christian Sonship, that one lays hold upon the very heart of Christian faith and life. Hence this investigation of ours to find the formulas, the content and the meaning of the Johannine doctrine of the divine sonship of Christians. When we start investigating the Johannine doctrine of the divine sonship of Christians, we are confonted with certain questions regarding its nature and origin: Is the Johannine concept of sonship something purely juridical or moral, or does it suppose an ontological reality? If it supposes such a reality, in what does is consist? How do men obtain this reality so as to become children of God?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book attempts to reconceive the Trinity. Its thesis is that the Father beget the Son in or by the Holy Spirit. The Spirit proceeds from the Father as the one in whom the Son is begotten. While some contemporary authors have proposed a similar view, no-one has done so in such a complete and systematic fashion. Reconceiving the Trinity in this way has a number of advantages. Firstly, it is more in keeping with the New Testament proclamation, and thus it more closely aligns the economic and immanent Trinity. Secondly, it overcomes the inadequacies of traditional trinitarian formulations, in both Eastern and Western Churches, which incorporates erroneous philosophical presuppositions. Thirdly, it offers a resolution to the filioque controversy, which may be acceptable to both the Latin and the Orthodox Churches. This book is, therefore, highly ecumenical in importance. Fourthly, it gives a more active and essential role to the Holy Spirit within the immanent Trinity, something that has been lacking throughout the trinitarian tradition. The true subjectivity or personality of the Holy Spirit is more clearly defined. This book brings out the spiritual and practical importance of the Trinity for the everyday lives of Christians. It defines more clearly how Christians are grafted into the very life of the Trinity: how they come to relate to the persons of the Trinity in a manner analogous to the way they relate to one another.

Book excerpt: Recent research on the Johannine literature has concluded that behind these writings stands a flourishing community of Christians who lived under the tutelage of the Beloved Disciple, preserved his writings, and venerated his memory. In this book, Gary M. Burge examines one feature of this community's belief and experience: the role of the Spirit in its view both of Christ and of the Christian experience.

Book excerpt: A new era of post church reformation has dawned upon the Church of Jesus Christ. The return of the apostolic ministry has become prominent in the forefront of a new wineskin being ushered in the earth. This new wineskin is issuing forth new insights into an otherwise previously hidden view of God's word adjusting traditionally accepted notions of church structure, culture and its position as the house of God. As workmen within the five-fold ministry, apostles are carriers of the fundamental truths of grace resident in Christ as He builds the house of God through matured sons. Through the Holy Spirit's guidance, the true relational configuration of believers as sons of God is being made known through this current apostolic season. As the Son of God Jesus is the seed through whom God has revealed this mystical relationship of God himself as Father to those receiving Jesus Christ as Lord. God intentionally put in place the process of Sonship, making Jesus Christ the central figure of salvation. The theology of Christo-centric truth establishes the inheritance given to those maturing to be sons of God. The Call To Spiritual Sonship explores the growth of believers in their journey through the scriptures, unveiling the true relationship between Father God and His sons.

Many erroneous teachings are explored, and several biblical truths are enunciated by examining the true purpose and makeup of the kingdom of God on earth, mankind’s true spiritual identity as a son of God, the oneness and sameness of the one body of Christ (its makeup, potency, and role in restoring God’s will for all of creation), and the divisiveness of religion, which is deliberately created by a worldly system.

Book excerpt: The eighteenth-century English minister Andrew Fuller lived a consequential life, debating noteworthy contemporaries such as Thomas Paine and contributing to the pioneering international work of William Carey. However, his soteriology remains his most significant theological contribution. Fuller explored the role that human agency plays in salvation's reception, and he offered substantive theological proposals that many religious historians now credit with advancing the Evangelical Revival. Fuller's work was both traditional and creative. He sought faithfulness to the broader Protestant tradition but developed that tradition in unique and contextually relevant ways. Despite Fuller's influence, much research into his life and work remains. Andrew Fuller and the Search for a Faith Worthy of All Acceptation examines heretofore underutilized primary sources related to Fuller's theological development. It attends to neglected texts produced by Fuller's opponents and mentors. Analysing these sources provides a fresh reading of Fuller's historical setting, one that contextualizes his theology and illuminates his constructive work on faith as a human response to the Gospel. This new interpretation allows scholars to discern more accurately the concepts that animated Fuller, the persons he sought to refute, and the sources on which he relied. This interpretation of Fuller challenges assumptions in contemporary scholarship and raises new questions for further research.

Through salvation, we become sons (and daughters) of God. This relationship, however, does not exempt us from our responsibilities as servants of the Lord. Moreover, we will examine the relationship between the salvation, servanthood, and sonship of the believer.
