Book excerpt: This special issue of the Journal of Latin American Theology is a collaboration with Memoria Indígena on Indigenous theology. The explanatory preface by guest editor Drew “Andrés” Jennings-Grisham sets the stage for why Indigenous theologies and contributions are so needed by the global church. Toward that end, this issue of JLAT features more Indigenous voices than any of our previous publications. These voices reach us through poetry (Francisco Pérez Alonzo and Jocabed Solano), a devotional reflection (Benita Simón Mendoza), comments on Bible translation (Sabayu), a documentary film on weaving (reviewed by Samuel Lagunas), and the final summary document of a 2021 Memoria Indígena gathering on theological education. They come through articles, an interview, and a group response that challenge the church to decolonialize its theology and practice (Juana L. Condori Quispe, Fernando Quicaña, Drew Jennings-Grisham, and the FTL’s 3i Working Group). They come through a historical review of mission work (Azucena Rosal), of Indigenous social movements (Julián Guamán Gualli), and of FTL publications (Drew Jennings-Grisham). Two master’s theses have been summarized and adapted herein. One draws on Andean Kichwa spirituality to shape a holistic Christian theology of life (María Alejandra Andrade) and the other develops a hermeneutical proposal for dialoguing with scriptural narratives from, with, and for a specific Indigenous community (Jocabed Solano). We trust that engaging with these articles will lead us all into more mutual, interdependent, and responsible relationships in the power of Christ’s Spirit, the Ruah.

Book excerpt: Tuberculosis ran rampant in Japan during the late Meiji and Taisho years (1880s–1920s). Many of the victims of the then incurable disease were young female workers from the rural areas, who were trying to support their families by working in the new textile factories. The Japanese government of the time, however, seemed unprepared to tackle the epidemic. Elisheva A. Perelman argues that pragmatism and utilitarianism dominated the thinking of the administration, which saw little point in providing health services to a group of politically insignificant patients. This created a space for American evangelical organizations to offer their services. Perelman sees the relationship between the Japanese government and the evangelists as one of moral entrepreneurship on both sides. All the parties involved were trying to occupy the moral high ground. In the end, an uneasy but mutually beneficial arrangement was reached: the government accepted the evangelists’ assistance in providing relief to some tuberculosis patients, and the evangelists gained an opportunity to spread Christianity further in the country. Nonetheless, the patients remained a marginalized group as they possessed little agency over how they were treated. “Perelman captures the strategies that enabled Protestant missionaries to become a central force in treating tuberculosis and providing social services in prewar Japan. Book excerpt: The Longer Ending of the Gospel of Mark (Mark 16:9-20) was appended to the Gospel of Mark in the first half of the second century. James A. Kelhoffer explores this passage's distinct witness to the use of gospel traditions and the development of Christian thought. Concerning the origin of this passage, he argues that a single author made use of the New Testament Gospels in forging a more satisfactory ending to Mark. He studies the passage's sometimes innovative literary forms as well. Also of interest is the passage's claim that the ascended Lord will help those who believe to perform miraculous signs - casting out demons, speaking in new languages, picking up snakes, drinking poison with impunity and healing the sick - when they preach the gospel (verses 17-18, 20). This expectation is compared with portraits of miracles, especially in the context of mission, in the New Testament, various apocryphal acts and Christian apologists of the second and third centuries. In the two final chapters the author interprets the signs of picking up snakes (verse 18a) and drinking a deadly substance with impunity (verse 18b) in their history of religions contexts. An Epilogue summarizes the findings of this study and explores what can be ascertained about the otherwise unknown Christian author of Mark 16:9-20.
