Book excerpt: From Rhonda Woodward, a writer with “sparkle and heart,” comes a beloved Signet Regency Romance—available digitally for the first time. Luck has always eluded Celia Langston. When her parents passed away ten years ago, she had to make her own way in the world, forsaking a come-out Season in London—and any chance at marriage. But Celia, now a governess, has never been one for self-pity. Rather, at the age of six-and-twenty, she has accepted the lot Fate has dealt her—that of a spinster…With his handsome face, reputation for bravery in the war, and princely fortune, the Duke of Severly has never suffered for want of female companionship. The crème de la crème hang on his every word. So when he takes notice of his nephews’ governess—for even the plainest of gray dresses cannot conceal her regal poise and delicious curves—Severly surprises even himself. For one, he has never admired a woman below his station, let alone a governess. For another, Celia seems to hold a grudge against him. But her rejection of him only fans the flames of his desire, and Severly knows he’s in for a long and difficult chase…“Rhonda Woodward shows a definite flair for the Regency period.”—The Romance Reader“A talented writer.”—Rakehell“[Rhonda Woodward has] historically accurate writing that shines.”—All About Romance

Download or read book The Spinster Book written by Myrtle Reed and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2019-12-04 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The Spinster Book', an amusing relic of a bygone era, offers a unique and entertaining glimpse into the world of courtship and dating over a century ago. While it may seem outdated in its approach to gender relations, the book provides a fascinating window into a time when dating was a highly structured affair. The chapter titles alone, such as 'The Lost Art of Courtship' and 'Love Letters: Old and New', are enough to transport readers back to a more gentle time. Despite its antiquated views, The Spinster Book is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of romance and the evolution of dating customs.

Lifelong cynic Jas is the queen of one-night things—until a plumbing disaster screws everything up and leaves her temporarily homeless. Luckily, she has someone to turn to: her best friend Rahul. For seven years, Rahul Khan has followed three simple rules. Don’t touch Jasmine if you can help it. Don’t look at her arse in that skirt. And don’t ever—ever—tell her you love her. He should’ve added another rule: Do not, under any circumstances, let Jas move into your house. Now Rahul is living with the friend he can’t have, and it’s decimating his control. He knows their shared dinners aren’t dates, their late-night kisses are a mistake, and the tenderness in Jasmine’s gaze is only temporary. One wrong word could send his skittish best friend running. So why is he tempted to risk it all?
Download or read book Spinster written by Kate Bolick and published by Crown. This book was released on 2015-04-21 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Book Review Notable Book “Whom to marry, and when will it happen—these two questions define every woman’s existence.” So begins Spinster, a revelatory and slyly erudite look at the pleasures and possibilities of remaining single. Using her own experiences as a starting point, journalist and cultural critic Kate Bolick invites us into her carefully considered, passionately lived life, weaving together the past and present to examine why she—along with over 100 million American women, whose ranks keep growing—remains unmarried. This unprecedented demographic shift, Bolick explains, is the logical outcome of hundreds of years of change that has neither been fully understood, nor appreciated. Spinster introduces a cast of pioneering women from the last century whose genius, tenacity, and flair for drama have emboldened Bolick to fashion her life on her own terms: columnist Neith Boyce, essayist Maeve Brennan, social visionary Charlotte Perkins Gilman, poet Edna St. Vincent Millay, and novelist Edith Wharton. By animating their unconventional ideas and choices, Bolick shows us that contemporary debates about settling down, and having it all, are timeless—the crucible upon which all thoughtful women have tried for centuries to forge a good life. Intellectually substantial and deeply personal, Spinster is both an unreservedly inquisitive memoir and a broader cultural exploration that asks us to acknowledge the opportunities within ourselves to live authentically. Bolick offers us a way back into our own lives—a chance to see those splendid years when we were young and unencumbered, or middle-aged and finally left to our own devices, for what they really are: unbounded and our own to savor.

Book Synopsis The Just Economy by : James E. Meade
Download or read book The Just Economy written by James E. Meade and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-12-12 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1979, this fourth part of Principles of Political Economy applies the tools of economic analysis to the distribution of income and property. Professor Meade considers the problems of making interpersonal comparisons of welfare and of distinguishing between the efficiency and distributional aspects of changes in social welfare. He analyses the possible criteria for redistribution as between rich and poor members of the same generation, as between present and future generations, and – in the context of demographic policies – as between the born and the unborn. Special attention is given to the social factors (such as assortative mating, differential fertility, and laws and customs relating to the inheritance of property) in explaining the persistence of economic inequalities, and to the various forms of economic policy which may be devised for the reduction of such inequalities. An extensive mathematical model of the dynamics of social welfare in a second-best economy is appended.

Book Synopsis Women, marriage and property in wealthy landed families in Ireland, 1750–1850 by : Deborah Wilson
Download or read book Women, marriage and property in wealthy landed families in Ireland, 1750–1850 written by Deborah Wilson and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-19 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until recently, women featured in the historiography of the landed class in Ireland either as bearers of assets to advantageous matches or as potential drains on family estates. Drawing on a range of sources from the papers of landed families, this book provides fresh insights into the place of these women. Looking at women’s experiences of property and power in twenty landed families between 1750 and 1850, and outlining the statutory developments that impacted upon the distribution of family property in Ireland, Wilson considers how women were provided for and examines the legal, social and familial factors that influenced the experience elite women had of property. Individual examples demonstrate the similarities and differences between women in this class, and illustrate how the experience women had of property in this period was more complex than their legal and social status might suggest. This book will appeal to scholars in the fields of Irish history, gender and women’s studies.

Book Synopsis The Single Homemaker and Material Culture in the Long Eighteenth Century by : David Hussey
Download or read book The Single Homemaker and Material Culture in the Long Eighteenth Century written by David Hussey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Single Homemaker and Material Culture in the Long Eighteenth Century represents a new synthesis of gender history and material culture studies. It seeks to analyse the lives and cultural expression of single men and women from 1650 to 1850 within the main focus of domestic activity, the home. Whilst there is much scholarly interest in singleness and a raft of literature on the construction and apprehension of the home, no other book has sought to bring these discrete studies together. Similarly, scholarly work has been limited in evaluating gendered consumption practices during the long eighteenth century because of an emphasis on the homes of families. Analysing the practices of single people emphasises the differences, but also amplifies the similarities, in their strategies of domestic life.
