Book Synopsis The Spiders of Allah by : James Hider
Download or read book The Spiders of Allah written by James Hider and published by St. Martin's Griffin. This book was released on 2009-06-23 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his fascinating, terrifying and often very funny book, James Hider takes his doubts about religious beliefs straight into the dark heart of the world's holy wars—from Israel to Gaza to Iraq—the birthplace that spawned so many faiths—and then back to Jerusalem. From hardcore Zionist settlers still fighting ancient Biblical battles in the hills of the West Bank to Shiite death squads roaming the lawless streets of Iraq in the aftermath of Saddam; whether it's the misappropriation and martyrdom of Mickey Mouse by Gaza's Islamists, or a US president acting on God's orders, Hider sees the hallucinatory effect of what he calls the 'crack cocaine of fanatical fundamentalism' all around him. As he meets terrorists, suicide bombers, soldiers, ayatollahs, clerics, and ordinary and extraordinary people alike, the question that sparked his journey continues to plague his thoughts: how can people not only believe in this madness, but die and kill for it too? This extraordinary and timely book takes the God Delusion debate onto the streets of the Middle East. It casts an unflinching yet compassionate eye on the very worst and most violent crimes committed in the name of religion, and then sharply asks the questions the world needs to answer if we are ever to stand a chance of facing our own worst demons.

Download or read book The Spider's House written by Paul Bowles and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2011-11-15 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1955, Paul Bowles’s remarkable novel set in Fez, Morocco, during the last days of the French colonial empire, is an expansive piece of writing—vintage Bowles "With its atmosphere of sinister tension, its scenes of nationalist conspiracy and French police action, of escape and pursuit in the Arab quarter, The Spider's House reads for stretches like a first-class political thriller." -New York Times The dilemma of the outsider in an alien society, and the gap in understanding between cultures, recurrent themes of Paul Bowles’s writings, are dramatized with brutal honesty in this novel set in Fez, Morocco, during that country’s 1954 nationalist uprising. Totally relevant to today’s political situation in the Middle East and elsewhere, richly descriptive of its setting, and uncompromising in its characterizations, The Spider’s House is perhaps Bowles’s best, most beautifully subtle novel.
Download or read book Green Deen written by Ibrahim Abdul-Matin and published by Berrett-Koehler Publishers. This book was released on 2013-01-21 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Muslim environmentalist explores the fascinating intersection of environmentalism and Islam. Muslims are compelled by their religion to praise the Creator and to care for their community. But what is not widely known is that there are deep and long-standing connections between Islamic teachings and environmentalism. In this groundbreaking book, Ibrahim Abdul-Matin draws on research, scripture, and interviews with Muslim Americans to trace Islam’s preoccupation with humankind’s collective role as stewards of the Earth. Abdul-Matin points out that the Prophet Muhammad declared “the Earth is a mosque.” Using the concept of Deen, which means “path” or “way” in Arabic, Abdul-Matin offers dozens of examples of how Muslims can follow, and already are following, a Green Deen in four areas: “waste, watts (energy), water, and food.”
Download or read book Hadith written by Jonathan A.C. Brown and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-12-07 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contrary to popular opinion, the bulk of Islamic law does not come from the Quran but from hadith, first-hand reports of the Prophet Muhammad’s words and deeds, passed from generation to generation. However, with varying accounts often only committed to paper a century after the death of Muhammad, Islamic scholars, past and present, have been faced with complex questions of historical authenticity. In this wide-ranging introduction, Jonathan A. C. Brown explores the collection and criticism of hadith, and the controversy surrounding its role in modern Islam. This edition, revised and updated with additional case studies and attention to the very latest scholarship, also features a new chapter on how hadiths have been used politically, both historically and in the Arab Spring and its aftermath. Informative and accessible, it is perfectly suited to students, scholars and general readers interested in this critical element of Islam.

Book excerpt: What if the crow who showed Cain how to bury Abel was returning from a justice council with the corpse of a condemned and executed fellow crow? Ahmad Bahjat imagines this scenario and others in the wildly inventive tales he collects in Our Story. Bahjat envisions animal lives and communities as complete as human ones, and he retells the familiar stories of the prophets through this new lens, adding a layer of illuminating viewpoints to the well-known stories. No one has been able to ask Salih’s camel what she thought of the disbelievers’ refutations, but through Bahjat’s creative and insightful tales, we can now conjecture. A feat of imagination and elaborate world building, these stories combine a Muslim’s love of the prophets and a desire to follow them with the recognition that humanity is not alone on this earth. Our Story provides a new frame of reference for our most beloved childhood stories.

Book Synopsis Su Boom Boom Su Boom Ka by : Germain T. Gollo
Download or read book Su Boom Boom Su Boom Ka written by Germain T. Gollo and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2022-10-17 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Su Boom Boom Su Boom Ka When I was an elementary school teacher in the Ivory Coast, I set aside some special time. I called that special time "Stories Time." I first initiate some tales and then end up with some discussions to see whether my young students can grasp the meaning of my tale. On many occasions, I invite them to tell to the class their Hamlet's story to enrich the class with the wisdom of each individual legend or stories. Our stories personify daily people in their actions. In the Hare's accounts, this is a cunning creature with fertile imagination and is capable of getting around the most difficult situation. On the other hand of the spectrum, we have Hyena, a gluttonous and too stupid, imbecile, arrogant, and pretentious animal who misapplies the teachings of Hare, resulting to him being punished. The discovery of things in Mother Nature is illustrated by the story of Nekpo and Vili. After serious blowbacks by Vili the porcupine, the hunter came about the ideas of using the porcupine's deadly spines to conceive an arrow. A mother whose son had not grasped the meaning of the logic yet, and therefore not being able to measure the consequences of his own actions, was left to manage his mother's food preparation while out in the field. In complicity with his baby brother, Saki ate all the meat and leaves a few. As a result, when mother came back, she severely punished them. It is not because that somebody is physically impaired that she must be mocked. That debilitated person can save lives. Akissi, who initially is uninvited to join the group of young women of her age, saves lives of her sisters from a powerful witchcraft. Human beings seldom recognize the goodness of hearts of those who get them out of dire situations. Or what goes around must come down and what goes up obviously comes down. One can't spit in air and not expect to receive some droplets of saliva in one's face. That is exactly what happened in the story of Tiger that dug a pit and threw himself in. Monkey, heartbroken because of his distress, came to his rescue and then Tiger wants to make him prey. Then, an arbitrary came and saw his tricks and set Monkey free.

Download or read book Muhammad written by Martin Lings and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acclaimed worldwide as the definitive biography of the Prophet Muhammad in the English language, Martin Lings' Muhammad: His Life Based to the Earliest Sources is unlike any other. Based on Arabic sources of the eighth and ninth centuries, of which some important passages are translated here for the first time, it owes the freshness and directness of its approach to the words of men and women who heard Muhammad speak and witnessed the events of his life. Martin Lings has an unusual gift for narrative. He has adopted a style which is at once extremely readable and reflects both the simplicity and grandeur of the story. The result is a book which will be read with equal enjoyment by those already familiar with Muhammad's life and those coming to it for the first time. Muhammad: His Life Based to the Earliest Sources was given an award by the government of Pakistan, and selected as the best biography of the Prophet in English at the National Seerat Conference in Islamabad in 1983.
Book Synopsis Animals in Islamic Tradition and Muslim Cultures by : Richard Foltz
Download or read book Animals in Islamic Tradition and Muslim Cultures written by Richard Foltz and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From references to animals in the Qu'ran to modern-day websites on Islamic vegetarianism, Richard C. Foltz presents the first comprehensive study of the role of animals in the Islamic tradition. Drawing on a wide range of sources, including classic mysticism, Foltz traces the development of Islamic attitudes towards animals over the centuries and confronts the key ethical questions facing Muslims today. Modern advances in science and technology and the increasing prevalence of techniques such as bioengineering and factory farming have forced many religions to reassess their traditional notions of animal rights and, as Foltz demonstrates, Muslims are increasingly asking their tradition to respond to such issues. Scholarly yet accessible, this is an original and informative contribution to Islamic studies, and will be essential reading for anyone, Muslim or non-Muslim, with an interest in the significance of religion and culture for the contemporary animal rights debate.
