Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WE are constantly on a stretch, if not on a strain, to devise new methods, new plans, new organizations to advance the Church and secure enlargement and efficiency for the gospel. This trend of the day has a tendency to lose sight of the man or sink the man in the plan or organization. God's plan is to make much of the man, far more of him than of anything else. Men are God's method. The Church is looking for better methods; God is looking for better men. "There was a man sent from God whose name was John." The dispensation that heralded and prepared the way for Christ was bound up in that man John. "Unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given." The world's salvation comes out of that cradled Son. When Paul appeals to the personal character of the men who rooted the gospel in the world, he solves the mystery of their success. The glory and efficiency of the gospel is staked on the men who proclaim it. When God declares that "the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him," he declares the necessity of men and his dependence on them as a channel through which to exert his power upon the world. This vital, urgent truth is one that this age of machinery is apt to forget. The forgetting of it is as baneful on the work of God as would be the striking of the sun from his sphere. Darkness, confusion, and death would ensue. Book excerpt: Prayer is a powerful force -- in Tennyson's oft-quoted phrase, "more things are wrought by prayer than this world dreams of." But the Lord's Prayer is so familiar that we often take it for granted, reciting it by rote and missing its deeper meaning. Pray Like This... is an informative volume that helps you rediscover the simplicity and strength of the prayer that Jesus taught us. Alex Gondola carefully analyzes each of the prayer's ten petitions and explores how it is Christ's template for communicating with God. Suitable for personal devotions, adult study groups, sermon preparation, or gift-giving, Pray Like This... is a versatile resource that will unclog your spiritual arteries and open new pathways in your own prayer life. In this straight-talking collection of sermons, we learn the Lord's Prayer for the first time. Fresh and well researched, we go back to basics in forward drive. Gondola has made the old and familiar alive and new. Donna E. Schaper Senior Pastor, Coral Gables Congregational Church Coral Gables, Florida The sermons in Pray Like This... are brief, well developed, easy to follow, appropriately illustrated, and consistently focused on the biblical text. They are instructional in their exegetical and theological insights. They are inspirational in their poetic language and their passionate engagement of a listening congregation. I endorse the full flower of Alex Gondola's preaching here, and I vigorously inhale its fragrance. Eddie O'Neal Bartlet Professor of Sacred Rhetoric Emeritus Andover Newton Theological School Alex A. Gondola Jr., is senior pastor of Dennis Union Church (United Church of Christ) in Dennis, Massachusetts (located on Cape Cod). He has also served congregations in Springfield, Massachusetts; Rome, New York; and Utica, New York. Gondola is a graduate of Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania (B.A.), Andover Newton Theological School (M.Div.), and Colgate Rochester Divinity School in Rochester, New York (D.Min.), and has also studied at Hartford Seminary and the New College of Divinity of the University of Edinburgh (Scotland). He is the author of Come As You Are and Don't Forget The Child (CSS), and contributed several stewardship sermons to the CSS anthology From Every Angle.

Book excerpt: Has prayer become just another complicated ritual? Is it a struggle to spend time in prayer? Does God really answer prayer? E. M. Bounds shows us that prayer is not difficult. It is a privilege and a blessing. By examining how Jesus prayed, Bounds helps us to pray boldly and expectantly. When we pray with the confidence of a child, we will find that God is eager to answer us, and we will discover the reality of what Jesus knew—prayer works!

This book was released on 2022-09-20 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The story of every great Christian achievement is the history of answered prayer." Christian prayer often lacks true conviction, an honest belief that these quiet utterances can contribute to advancing God's Kingdom, releasing power, goodness, and peace into a broken, weary world. In his later books devoted to the subject of prayer, E. M. Bounds contended that prayer is “the greatest work” of the believer, “the battlefield of the Church,” and “the mightiest agent to advance God’s work.” Civil-War-era Methodist pastor, Edward McKendree Bounds (1835-1913) was an unrivaled expert on the subject of prayer, with nine books to his name published on the topic. The latter part of Bounds’ life was devoted to rising before dawn each morning to pray before writing the words found in these pages. This collection of books is a product of his personal commitment to, and steadfast belief in, prayer. The Complete Works of E. M. Bounds on Prayer Volume II includes the books: The Reality of Prayer, The Essentials of Prayer, The Necessity of Prayer and The Weapon of Prayer. Through practical and insightful thoughts, Bounds explores how prayer can: Cultivate deeper intimacy with God Produce tangible results Foster Christian values Overcome Satan’s hold Activate the Holy Spirit For the doubting believer, Bounds’ passion and wisdom are a breath of fresh air, a call to arms and an invitation to collaborate with Christ in bringing the Kingdom of God to a world in need.

Book excerpt: Too often we think of prayer in only the human dimension: as a means of edification, or spiritual empowerment, but prayer in fact is a mostly spiritual thing where it impacts many different aspects of life and spirit. Bounds expounds on this brilliantly and uses both Christ and the Holy Spirit as examples of and the expositors or our prayers to the Father.

Book excerpt: The Reality of Prayer is a message of meditation based on the Bible and written by Edward McKendree Bounds (August 15, 1835 – August 24, 1913) prominently known as E.M. Bounds, was an American author, attorney, and member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South clergy. He is known for writing 11 books, nine of which focused on the subject of prayer. Only two of Bounds' books were published before he died. After his death, Rev. Claudius (Claude) Lysias Chilton, Jr., grandson of William Parish Chilton and admirer of Bounds, worked on preserving and preparing Bounds' collection of manuscripts for publication. By 1921, Homer W. Hodge completed additional editorial work. Edward McKendree Bounds was born on August 15, 1835, in Shelbyville, Missouri. He is the son of Thomas Jefferson and Hester A. (née Purnell) Bounds. In the preface to E.M. Bounds on Prayer, published by Hendrickson Christian Classics Series over 90 years after Bounds' death, it is surmised that young Edward was named after the evangelist, William McKendree, who planted churches in western Missouri and served as the fourth bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He was the fifth child, in a family of three sons and three daughters.

Book excerpt: What the Church needs to-day is not more machinery or better, not new organizations or more and novel methods, but men whom the Holy Ghost can use -- men of prayer, men mighty in prayer. The Holy Ghost does not flow through methods, but through men. He does not come on machinery, but on men. He does not anoint plans, but men -- men of prayer. An eminent historian has said that the accidents of personal character have more to do with the revolutions of nations than either philosophic historians or democratic politicians will allow. This truth has its application in full to the gospel of Christ, the character and conduct of the followers of Christ -- Christianize the world, transfigure nations and individuals. Of the preachers of the gospel it is eminently true.
