Book excerpt: The book contributes to a better understanding of the role such co-operation can play in complying cost-effectively with European environmental legislation, in particularly the EU Nitrates and Water Framework Directives, and in achieving a sustainable agriculture. The feasibility of meeting environmental standards by the application of voluntary agreements between farmers and water suppliers is analysed as a more economically efficient and environmentally effective means compared to applying alternative instruments like command-and-control and taxes. In addition, the potential of voluntary co-operative agreements for achieving a more flexible European Union water policy as well as for reforming the Common Agricultural Policy is assessed. The book will appeal to those researching and working in achieving a more sustainable water management and agricultural practices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phyllis Shand Allfrey is the first biography of one of the Caribbean's most intriguing writers and politicians. Allfrey (1908-1986) is best known as the author of The Orchid House, a fictionalized account of her early life that was turned into a highly acclaimed film for British television. Born to a prominent family of formerly wealthy sugar planters in Dominica, Allfrey followed an unexpected path: a rising novelist (who is often paired with Jean Rhys in critical discussion) and Fabian socialist in England and the United States, she returned to Dominica to organize the peasantry and estate workers into the island's first political party. Ostracized by the white elite into which she was born, she led the Dominica Labour party to power and became the West Indian Federation's only woman (and only white) minister, only to find herself expelled from the party when the rise of black nationalism made it expedient. The biography recreates Allfrey's life as it unfolds against the background of twentieth-century Caribbean political and literary history, from the decline of the planter class through the rise of party politics and the efforts to join the anglophone West Indies into a federation, to the troubled sixties and seventies, decades marked by racial violence and the emergence of the former British territories from colonial control. This volume includes five autobiographical stories that have long been out of print.

Book excerpt: This book is the first fully illustrated and comprehensive monograph devoted to the Westphalian artist Conrad von Soest, who played a pivotal role in the development of North European art around 1400, and whose elegant and luxurious altarpieces highlight a fascinating period of German social and economic history. His complete oeuvre is reproduced here in 34 colour plates as well as a host of black and white, detail and comparative illustrations. Among the works are the famous Niederwildungen and Dortmund altarpieces as well as the smaller scale panels which project in their rich and exquisitely painted figures both the importance of their subjects and the sophistication of their donors. Dr Corley has researched Conrad's work in depth setting it in the context of his period and his early training in Paris in the 1380s. His iconography and style are analyzed, particularly the vibrant and vigourous under-drawing revealed by infra-red photography which has helped the author to establish, among the works attributed to him, which of these were from his hand and which by his workshop or imitators. Finally, she has traced his legacy throughout the countries in the sphere of the Hanseatic League and his influence over later German masters of the School of Cologne. A detailed Catalogue and an extensive Bibliography establish the known corpus of his oeuvre.

Another perspective is provided by the private diaries, memoirs and chronicles of soldiers and citizens who recorded their own experiences. War at the individual level is discussed and described using these sources, which are extensively quoted in their own words.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For forty years, this widely acclaimed classic has remained unsurpassed as an introduction to art in the Western world, boasting the matchless credibility of the Janson name. This newest update features a more contemporary, more colorful design and vast array of extraordinarily produced illustrations that have become the Janson hallmark. A narrative voice makes this book a truly enjoyable read, and carefully reviewed and revised updates to this edition offer the utmost clarity in contributions based on recent scholarship. Extensive captions for the book’s incredible art program offer profound insight through the eyes of twentieth-century art historians speaking about specific pieces of art featured throughout. Significantly changed in this edition is the chapter on “The Late Renaissance,” in which Janson offers a new perspective on the subject, tracing in detail the religious art tied to the Catholic Reform movement, whose early history is little known to many readers of art history. Janson has also rearranged early Renaissance art according to genres instead of time sequence, and he has followed the reinterpretation of Etruscan art begun in recent years by German and English art historians. With a truly humanist approach, this book gives written and visual meaning to the captivating story of what artists have tried to express—and why—for more than 30,000 years.
