Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Speeches: Literary and Social Charles Dickens Speeches: Literary and Social collects Dickens's speeches from the early 1840s onward. In these speeches we see him discussing his own work, and various other topics, with humility and grace. These speeches offer the reader insight into Dickens the man, the public figure, the ordinary citizen. They also provide important information about his audience. Those present at these speeches were also the consumers of his fiction, and here we see him addressing them directly and personally. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Book excerpt: If I felt your warm and generous welcome less, I should be better able to thank you. If I could have listened as you have listened to the glowing language of your distinguished Chairman, and if I could have heard as you heard the "thoughts that breathe and words that burn," which he has uttered, it would have gone hard but I should have caught some portion of his enthusiasm, and kindled at his example. But every word which fell from his lips, and every demonstration of sympathy and approbation with which you received his eloquent expressions, renders me unable to respond to his kindness, and leaves me at last all heart and no lips, yearning to respond as I would do to your cordial greeting - possessing, heaven knows, the will, and desiring only to find the way.

This book was released on 2018-01-15 with total page 958 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Works of Charles Dickens, Vol. 3 of 17 Once upon a time it was held to be a coarse and shocking circumstance, that some of the characters in these pages are chosen from the most criminal and degraded of London's population. As I saw no reason, when I wrote this book, why the dregs of life (so long as their speech did not offend the ear) should not serve the purpose of a moral, as well as its froth and cream, I made bold to believe that this same Once upon a time would not prove to be All-time or even a long time. I saw many strong reasons for pursuing my course. I had read of thieves by scores seductive fellows (amiable for the most part), faultless in dress, plump in pocket, choice in horse-flesh, bold in bearing, fortunate in gallantry, great at a song, a bottle, pack of cards or dice-box, and fit companions for the bravest. But I had never met (except in hogarth) with the miserable reality. It appeared to me that to draw a knot of such associates in crime as really did exist; to paint them in all their deformity, in all their wretchedness, in all the squalid misery of their lives; to Show them as they really were, for ever Skulking uneasily through the dirtiest paths of life, with the great black ghastly gallows closing up their prospect, turn them where they might; it appeared to me that to do this, would be to attempt a something which was needed, and which would be a service to society. And I did it as I best could. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
