Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rapid spectrochemical method is proposed for the analysis of silicate materials for a number of elements. It uses a solution technique and a plasma-jet source. The sample is fused with lithium metaborate and dissolved in dilute acid; palladium is added as the internal standard, and the solution is aspirated into a plasma-jet gas-stabilized arc. The accuracy and reproducibility are satisfactory for the usual rock-forming elements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analytical Chemistry in Space presents an analysis of the chemical constitution of space, particularly the particles in the solar wind, of the planetary atmospheres, and the surfaces of the moon and planets. Topics range from space engineering considerations to solar system atmospheres and recovered extraterrestrial materials. Mass spectroscopy in space exploration is also discussed, along with lunar and planetary surface analysis using neutron inelastic scattering. This book is comprised of seven chapters and opens with a discussion on the possibilities for exploration of the solar system by mass spectroscopy, with particular reference to analysis of compositional data on solar system objects such as the Earth and meteorites, asteroids, comets, and interplanetary dust. The reader is then introduced to the project administration, instrument design, and spacecraft integration problems that must be solved to successfully fly a space experiment. The following chapters focus on the atmospheres of the sun and planets; the use of mass spectroscopy in solar system exploration and of neutron inelastic scattering in lunar and planetary surface analysis; and extraterrestrial in situ 14 MeV neutron activation analysis. The final chapter is devoted to the advantages and applications of thermal neutron activation to the analysis of certain samples of geological interest. This monograph will be a useful resource for analytical chemists and space scientists.

Book excerpt: There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy. Hamlet There exists a fairly large number of textbooks concerned with spectrochemical analysis. Most of them deal with practical applications and instrumental factors, and provide the reader with the knowledge indispensable for conducting analyses with the help of emission spectra. Practical knowledge and experience are indeed important requisites for success fully exploiting the spectrochemical method in the field of analytical chemistry. As the method is essentially empirical, it is, in principle, a simple one, provided that we succeed in exciting all samples in an identical manner; for then, relative intensities of spectral lines can serve as the 'weights' by which to measure amounts of elements. However, creating the required constancy of excitation conditions is hampered by the very nature of the sample, whose composition profoundly influences the excitation characteristics of the light source. Therefore, spectrochemists are inevitably engaged in all the processes that determine the radiation output of the light source for a given sample. Dealing, with this ensemble of processes, that is, with 'excitation' in the widest sense, is the object of this book (cf. § 1. 1). The reader will seek in vain for enumerations of practical rules that would tell him how to tackle a particular analysis problem.

Download or read book Activities of the NBS Spectrochemical Analysis Section written by Bourdon Francis Scribner and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Activities in optical spectrometry included development of programs for calculations on a time-sharing computer, measurement of arc temperatures, applications of the laser probe and the plasma jet, and studies on atomic absorption spectrometry. In x-ray spectroscopy, there were some modifications of equipment, improvements in computation methods, and several applications. Improvements and additions were made to the electron probe analyzer, along with studies on measurement techniques, including nondispersive analysis and computation procedures. The spark-source mass spectrometer was also modified, and a new analog computer has been built and tested for reduction of photographic plate data; applications of this instrument to analyses of pure materials are described. Enrichment methods are being studied for the analysis of pure materials by emission spectroscopy, particularly with an electro-deposition technique. Homogeneity studies and analyses were performed in the development of standard reference materials. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemical Analysis of Silicate Rocks is the sixth book in the series, “Methods in Geochemistry and Geophysics. This book provides procedures in chemical analysis of the principal types of silicate rocks and minerals, and it discusses each procedure at length. The book presents different apparatuses and reagents, such as balance and weighs, glassware and porcelain, platinum and substitutes, and filters that are used in the chemical analysis of silicate rocks. Laboratory instruments, such as pH meters, spectrophotometers and flame photometers, are presented in the third chapter. The fourth chapter focuses on the major factors in spectrophotometric methods. The next three chapters cover the common operations in silicate analysis, chemical analysis of silicate rocks, and preparation of the laboratory sample. From chapter eight through 20, each chapter discusses various silicate rocks and minerals, and presents the methods to be used for their chemical analysis. These chemical components are silicon, total iron, titanium, aluminum, calcium, magnesium, ferrous iron, manganese, chromium, alkalies, water and carbon dioxide, phosphorus, and total sulfur. Chapters 21 and 22 offer the formulas of minerals and the determination of specific gravity. The book closes by providing notes on the precision and accuracy of results obtained in silicate rock.
