Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ambitious book by Américo Castro is not simply a history of the Spanish people or culture. It is an attempt to create an entirely new understanding of Spanish society. The Spaniards examines how the social position, religious affiliation, and beliefs of Christians, Moors, and Jews, together with their feelings of superiority or inferiority, determined the development of Spanish identity and culture. Castro follows how españoles began to form a nation beginning in the thirteenth century and became wholly Spanish in the sixteenth century in a different way and under different circumstances than other peoples of Western Europe. The original material of this book (chapters II through XII) was translated by Willard F. King, and the newly added material (preface, chapters I, XIII, and XIV, and appendix) was translated by Selma Margaretten. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1971.

Unfortunately, right now the only man in her life is her husband's best friend, Rafael Sanchez. And an incredibly wealthy, super-hot player is not exactly family material. That's okay since she wants a baby sans the husband part. Billionaire playboy Rafael has carefully hidden his longing for Isobel over the years. He's wanted her from the moment they met. When desire sparks between them, Rafael faces a choice beyond imagining: give Isobel what she wants...or lose her forever. He has a good reason why a child can't be in his future, but telling Isobel the truth could destroy everything.

When Katarina Sanchez is drawn into the world of flamenco, she’s forced to make a decision—comply with her affluent family’s rigid lifestyle or live a life of poverty but enjoy freedom and self-expression. Although Spain is crippled under a dictatorship, Katarina finds love. However, the tragedy of war brings heartbreak. An opportunity to right a past wrong arises, yet it comes at a cost for Katarina—save the lives of many or potentially lose the only man she’s ever loved. Present day. Charlotte Kavanagh will do anything to fulfill the wishes of her ailing grandmother, even if it means travelling to Spain to uncover the truth behind a mysterious painting. As Charlotte explores Granada’s ancient cobblestone streets, she meets Mateo Vives, a man with a dark past and the only person who can help Charlotte complete her quest. As the secret surrounding the painting deepens, she discovers her grandmother’s connection to the Spanish underground. Weighed down by secrets and betrayals, Charlotte finds herself questioning the true meaning of heritage, family, and love.

Book excerpt: The History of the Conquest of New Spain by Bernal Diaz del Castillo, a new abridgement of Diaz del Castillo's classic Historia verdadera de la conquista de Nueva España, offers a unique contribution to our understanding of the political and religious forces that drove the great cultural encounter between Spain and the Americas known as the "conquest of Mexico." Besides containing important passages, scenes, and events excluded from other abridgements, this edition includes eight useful interpretive essays that address indigenous religions and cultural practices, sexuality during the early colonial period, the roles of women in indigenous cultures, and analysis of the political and economic purposes behind Diaz del Castillo's narrative. A series of maps illuminate the routes of the conquistadors, the organization of indigenous settlements, the struggle for the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan, as well as the disastrous Spanish journey to Honduras. The information compiled for this volume offers increased accessibility to the original text, places it in a wider social and narrative context, and encourages further learning, research, and understanding.

Book excerpt: This collection of letters chronicles a remarkable, long-term friendship between two women who, despite differences of religion and ethnicity, have followed remarkably parallel paths from their first adolescent meeting in their native Chile to their current lives in exile as writers, academics, and political activists in the United States. Spanning more than thirty years (1966-2000), Agosín's and Sepúlveda's letters speak eloquently on themes that are at once personal and political—family life and patriarchy, women's roles, the loneliness of being a religious or cultural outsider, political turmoil in Chile, and the experience of exile.
