Book Synopsis The Lost Southern Chefs by : Robert F. Moss
Download or read book The Lost Southern Chefs written by Robert F. Moss and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2022-02-15 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, food writers and historians have begun to retell the story of southern food. Heirloom ingredients and traditional recipes have been rediscovered, the foundational role that African Americans played in the evolution of southern cuisine is coming to be recognized, and writers are finally clearing away the cobwebs of romantic myth that have long distorted the picture. The story of southern dining, however, remains incomplete. The Lost Southern Chefs begins to fill that niche by charting the evolution of commercial dining in the nineteenth-century South. Robert F. Moss punctures long-accepted notions that dining outside the home was universally poor, arguing that what we would today call “fine dining” flourished throughout the region as its towns and cities grew. Moss describes the economic forces and technological advances that revolutionized public dining, reshaped commercial pantries, and gave southerners who loved to eat a wealth of restaurants, hotel dining rooms, oyster houses, confectionery stores, and saloons. Most important, Moss tells the forgotten stories of the people who drove this culinary revolution. These men and women fully embodied the title “chef,” as they were the chiefs of their kitchens, directing large staffs, staging elaborate events for hundreds of guests, and establishing supply chains for the very best ingredients from across the expanding nation. Many were African Americans or recent immigrants from Europe, and they achieved culinary success despite great barriers and social challenges. These chefs and entrepreneurs became embroiled in the pitched political battles of Reconstruction and Jim Crow, and then their names were all but erased from history.

Book Synopsis Old South, New South by : Gavin Wright
Download or read book Old South, New South written by Gavin Wright and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this provocative and intricate analysis of the postbellum southern economy, Gavin Wright finds in the South’s peculiar labor market the answer to the perennial question of why the region remained backward for so long. After the Civil War, Wright explains, the South continued to be a low-wage regional market embedded in a high-wage national economy. He vividly details the origins, workings, and ultimate demise of that distinct system. The post-World War II southern economy, which created today’s Sunbelt, Wright shows, is not the result of the evolution of the old system, but the product of a revolution brought on by the New Deal and World War II that shattered the South’s stagnant structure and created a genuinely new, thriving order.

Book Synopsis The Indicted South by : Angie Maxwell
Download or read book The Indicted South written by Angie Maxwell and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2014-04-15 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the 1920s, the sectional reconciliation that had seemed achievable after Reconstruction was foundering, and the South was increasingly perceived and portrayed as impoverished, uneducated, and backward. In this interdisciplinary study, Angie Maxwell examines and connects three key twentieth-century moments in which the South was exposed to intense public criticism, identifying in white southerners' responses a pattern of defensiveness that shaped the region's political and cultural conservatism. Maxwell exposes the way the perception of regional inferiority confronted all types of southerners, focusing on the 1925 Scopes trial in Dayton, Tennessee, and the birth of the anti-evolution movement; the publication of I'll Take My Stand and the turn to New Criticism by the Southern Agrarians; and Virginia's campaign of Massive Resistance and Interposition in response to the Brown v. Board of Education decision. Tracing the effects of media scrutiny and the ridicule that characterized national discourse in each of these cases, Maxwell reveals the reactionary responses that linked modern southern whiteness with anti-elitism, states' rights, fundamentalism, and majoritarianism.
Book Synopsis The Southern South by : Albert Bushnell Hart
Download or read book The Southern South written by Albert Bushnell Hart and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-06-03 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Southern South" by Albert Bushnell Hart is a book that reveals the knowledge and appreciation of Southern conditions. It is not to the purpose of this book to describe those numerous common traits which belong to people in all sections of the United States but to bring into relief some of the characteristics of the South which are not shared by the North. For it is certain that the physical and climatic conditions of the South are different from those of the North, and equally sure that as a community the South has certain temperamental peculiarities which affect its views of the world in general and also of its own problems. Slavery, which had a little permanent effect on the society or institutions of those parts of the North in which it existed up to the Revolution, was for two centuries a large factor in Southern life and has left many marks upon both white and negro races. The existence of a formerly servile race now ten million-strong still influences the whole development of the South. Unlike the North, which ever since the Civil War has felt disposed to consider itself the characteristic United States, the South looks upon itself, and is looked upon by its neighbors, as a unit within a larger unit; as set apart by its traditions, its history, and its commercial interests. The ex-president of the Southern Confederacy a few years ago at a public meeting declared that he appeared "In a defense of our Southland." A Southland there is, in the sense of a body of states which, while now yielding to none in loyalty to the Union and in participation in its great career, adhere together with such a sense of peculiar life and standards as is not to be found in any group of Northern communities except perhaps New England.

Download or read book Serpent in Eden written by Fred Hobson and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The appearance in 1920 of H. L. Mencken's scathing essay about the intellectual and cultural impoverishment of the South, "The Sahara of the Bozart, " set off a firestorm of reaction in the region that continued unabated for much of the next decade. In Serpent in Eden, Mencken scholar Fred Hobson examines Mencken's love-hate relationship with the South. He explores not only Mencken's savage criticism of the region but also his efforts to encourage southern writers and the bold "little magazines, " such as the Reviewer and the Double Dealer, that started up in the South during the 1920s.

Book Synopsis Stories of the South by : K. Stephen Prince
Download or read book Stories of the South written by K. Stephen Prince and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2014 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the immediate aftermath of the Civil War, the North assumed significant power to redefine the South, imagining a region rebuilt and modeled on northern society. The white South actively resisted these efforts, battling the legal strictures of Reconstruction on the ground. Meanwhile, white southern storytellers worked to recast the South's image, romanticizing the Lost Cause and heralding the birth of a New South. Prince argues that this cultural production was as important as political competition and economic striving in turning the South and the nation away from the egalitarian promises of Reconstruction and toward Jim Crow.

Book excerpt: This book presents the state of the art for the studies of strategies and tactics for the procurement of preys in Argentina in different regions and chronologies (from the end of the Pleistocene until historic moments). The chapters are related to the performance of these practices in hunter-gatherer, shepherd and farmer societies. From the environmental point of view, they show cases in diverse areas such as plains, mountains, forests, sea coast, steppes and puna. Likewise, the range of preys considered includes ungulates (camelids and deer), runner birds (Rhea pennata) and minor prey (mammals and fish). The book is aimed at professionals and students of archaeology interested in the analysis of tactics and strategies for prey capture. Every chapter offers an important contribution in theoretical, methodological and technical terms. In addition, these works possess a high comparative value on study cases of very different chronologies and environments of the Southern hemisphere. This book is a result of the 1st Workshop "Strategies and tactics in order to obtain preys in the past: its discussion from the integration of different lines of evidence" which was conducted in San Rafael, Mendoza, Argentina, between the 8th and 10th of August, 2018.
Book Synopsis Southern Journey by : Edward L. Ayers
Download or read book Southern Journey written by Edward L. Ayers and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2020-11-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking a wide focus, Southern Journey narrates the evolution of southern history from the founding of the nation to the present day by focusing on the settling, unsettling, and resettling of the South. Using migration as the dominant theme of southern history and including indigenous, white, black, and immigrant people in the story, Edward L. Ayers cuts across the usual geographic, thematic, and chronological boundaries that subdivide southern history. Ayers explains the major contours and events of the southern past from a fresh perspective, weaving geography with history in innovative ways. He uses unique color maps created with sophisticated geographic information system (GIS) tools to interpret massive data sets from a humanistic perspective, providing a view of movement within the South with a clarity, detail, and continuity we have not seen before. The South has never stood still; it is—and always has been—changing in deep, radical, sometimes contradictory ways, often in divergent directions. Ayers’s history of migration in the South is a broad yet deep reinterpretation of the region’s past that informs our understanding of the population, economy, politics, and culture of the South today. Southern Journey is not only a pioneering work of history; it is a grand recasting of the South’s past by one of its most renowned and appreciated scholars.
