Many farmers keep the ewes over winter, raising a drop of early lambs from them, and fattening them (the ewes) the ensuing summer and fall on good pasturage, with a little grain after grass is injured by frost. They thus usually sell for abouttwice the first cost, or say $5 a head. In this way the grazier obtains a lamb, a fleece and the manure, in addition to doubling his original Outlay - or upwards of $10 for an expenditure of From this is to be deducted merely expense of keep. On Virginia lands this would leave up wards of $5 net profit a head, after deducting all expenses. At the present prices of Western sheep, the profits would be greater. From what I have learned of those prices, my impression is that inlambed, wintered ewes could have been bought in the West, before yeaning, with their fleeces on, 'for per head; and the dropped lambs would not probably yet add much to their price. The panic among sheep holders is, beginning to subside, but unless there is a decided change, it is probable that immediately after shearing, good strong ewes with lambs at their sides can be bought for about $2 a pair. Patrick in the city of Richmond, and, as a paroled prisoner of war, left that city with my family early in June, 1865, for my little home of some 200 acres, where I now reside. Travelling in my private convey ance and with a considerable quantity of baggage, 'i had ample time to observe the desolations of war and to ponder over the melancholy duties of the hour. Reaching home, I found my farm without a rail or a tree to make one, literally a. Common, and with a 100 head of town stock daily grazing upbn it. I recognized the rule of my State, which required the land-owner to fence in his. Farm, instead of re quiring the stock-owner to fence in his stock, and so made no war upon them. But this state of things made it my duty to enclose with the utmost activity. Every thing had to be provided, labor hired timber bought, hauled and put in position. The consequent' expenditure, being heavy, made it indispensable that the economy' of force should always be considered. While so engaged, I found in mylibrary a school book of my gallant son Austin, who, residing in California where he was rapidly accumulating a fortune, aban doued, at the call of his State, all his advantages, and on Whiting's staff in one of the earliest of the seven days' battle around Richmond, marked his devotion to our dear old Mother and Duty, with his life. This little volume, entitled Familiar Letters on Chemistry and its Relation to Commerce, Physiology and Agriculture, by Justus Lie big, M. Attracted my attention, and I read it with great interest, and, I trust, advantage. In the l0th letter I found the paragraph, which I have put at the head of this article, hoping, if you think it worthy of a place in your valuable paper, that it may benefit some of your numerous readers. Snapp remarked that when blue grass has agood stand, and the season is favorable, it will no doubt graze more cattle than other grasses mentioned by Mr. Sanders, but will not produce as many tons of hay. These, if allowed to get full grown, will afford excellent grazing, but the blue grass, being more permanent, will last longer, though it does not stand drouth well. I find, too, that old pastures will run out; worms get into them; the ground, from being constantly trampled, becomes packed the grass roots matted together, so that none but continued rains can wet the earth. When this obtains, it is all important to plow the land and impart new life to the soil. On my own plantation, a field of some fifty acres he came almost impenetrable to water. Worms cut off the grass, and this season I have had it thoroughly plowed preparatory to reset ting. On being asked by the Chair if he Could not restore it without plowing, said he thought not - that this was the best thing that sug gested itself.
