Book excerpt: Large organic debris has important biological and physical roles within the stream ecosystem. In order to determine the source area of large organic debris in streams, thirty-nine streams in the Cascade and Coast Ranges of Oregon and Washington were sampled. The distance from point-of-origin to channel was measured for thirty pieces of debris located within or straddling each stream. Streams varied in order (first- through third-order), age of surrounding timber (old-growth or mature stands), and sideslope steepness (steep or gentle slopes). The distribution of source area was similar in all streams, with 11% of the total number of debris pieces originating within one meter of the channel, and 90% originating within thirty meters in 29 of the 39 streams. Debris originating as far as 60.5 meters from the channel was noted. Distance from origin to channel was significantly greater for streams draining old-growth forests, for third-order channels, and for conifer as opposed to hardwood debris pieces. There were no significant differences in distance from origin to channel for steep and gentle sloped areas. Other variables were also compared with respect to stream order, stand age, and sideslope steepness. These include movement of the piece from the point-of-origin, bench width, length of piece, diameter of piece, and average sideslope steepness. The distance the piece moved from its origin and the diameter of debris were larger in steeper areas, whereas the length of debris and bench width were greater in gentle areas. Debris originating in old-growth stands moved further from the origin and was larger in both diameter and length than debris originating in mature stands. There were no significant differences in bench width or slope steepness for old-growth and mature stands. Conifer debris pieces moved further downhill, were longer and larger in diameter, and originated on steeper slopes than did hardwood debris. There were no differences in bench width for conifer and hardwood pieces. Length and diameter of debris were greater for third-order channels in comparison to lower order channels, although no differences in these variables were noted between first- and second-order channels. Third-order channels had more gentle sideslopes than smaller streams. Bench width increased significantly as stream order increased. There were no significant differences in movement of debris from the origin with respect to stream order. Management implications of the study are discussed.

Book excerpt: The Alsea Logging and Aquatic Resources Study, commissioned by the Oregon Legislature in 1959, marked the beginning of four decades of research in the Pacific Northwest devoted to understanding the impacts of forest practices on water quality, water quantity, aquatic habitat, and aquatic organism popu- tions. While earlier watershed research examined changes in runoff and erosion from various land uses, this study was the first watershed experiment to focus so heavily on aquatic habitat and organism response to forest practices. The Alsea Watershed Study, as it came to be known, extended over 15 years with seven years of pretreatment calibration measurements, a year of treatment, and seven years of post-treatment monitoring. The research was a cooperative effort with scientists from Oregon State University, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, the U.S. Geological Survey, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Cooperating landowners included the Georgia-Pacific Corporation, the U.S. Forest Service, and a local rancher. It was a remarkable 15-year partnership marked by excellent cooperation among the participants and outstanding coordination among the scientists, many of whom participated actively for the entire period.

Andrews Experimental Forest (Andrews Forest) is both an idea and a particular place. It is an experimental landscape, a natural resource, and an ecosystem that has long inspired many people. On the landscape of the Andrews Forest, some of those people built the foundation for a collaborative community that fosters closer communication among the scientists and managers who struggle to understand how that ecosystem functions and to identify optimal management strategies for this and other national forest lands in the Pacific Northwest. People who worked there generated new ideas about forest ecology and related ecosystems. Working together in this place, they generated ideas, developed research proposals, and considered the implications of their work. They functioned as individuals in a science-based community that emerged and evolved over time. Individuals acted in a confluence of personalities, personal choices, and power relations. In the context of this unique landscape and serendipitous opportunities, those people created an exceptionally potent learning environment for science and management. Science, in this context, was largely a story of personalities, not simply a matter of test tubes, experimental watersheds, or top-down management sponsored by a large federal agency or university. Ideas flowed in a constructed environment that eventually linked people, place, and community with an emerging vision of ecosystem management. Drawing largely on oral history, this book explores the inner workings and structure of that science-based community. Science themes, management issues, specific research programs, the landscape itself, and the people who work there are all indispensable components of a complex web of community, the Andrews group. The first four chapters explore the origins of the Forest Service decision to establish an experimental forest in the west-central Oregon Cascades in 1948 and the people and priorities that transformed that field site into a prominent facility for interdisciplinary research in the coniferous biome of the International Biological Programme in the 1970s. Later chapters explore emerging links between long-term research and interdisciplinary science at the Andrews Forest. Those links shaped the groups response to concerns about logging in old-growth forests during the 1980s and 1990s. Concluding chapters explore how scientists in the group tried to adapt to new roles as public policy consultants in the 1990s without losing sight of the community values that they considered crucial to their earlier accomplishments.
