Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Mariah Stewart returns to her beloved Chesapeake Diaries with this charming novel of small-town romance—perfect for fans of Barbara Freethy, Robyn Carr, and Susan Mallery. After taking stock of her life, Sophie Enright has decided it’s time for a break. Between a law career that’s become criminally dull and a two-timing boyfriend she’s done with once and for all, Sophie desperately needs some time to think and some space to breathe. The perfect place to do both is easygoing St. Dennis, Maryland, where Sophie can visit with her brother while she figures out her options. Once in St. Dennis, she discovers a shuttered restaurant and makes a bold move that is also a leap of faith. Sophie buys the fixer-upper in order to finally pursue her dream career. But Sophie’s labor of love becomes a bone of contention for her new neighbor Jason Bowers. The local landscaper has big plans for growing his business—until Sophie scoops up the property he’s got his eye on. And no amount of buyout offers or badgering from him will get her to budge. It’s hardly the start of a beautiful friendship. But when they’re paired up to work on a community project, they agree to put their differences aside, and sparks begin to fly. Then Sophie’s cheating ex suddenly shows up, looking for a second chance—and threatening to make Jason a third wheel just when his hotheaded feelings about Sophie were turning decidedly warmhearted. All Sophie wants is a new life and a true love. But what are the odds of having both? Praise for At the River’s Edge “Everything you love about small-town romance in one book . . . At the River’s Edge is a beautiful, heartwarming story. Don’t miss this one.”—Barbara Freethy “Another signature and heartwarming familial story . . . If a book is by Mariah Stewart, it has a subliminal message of ‘wonderful’ stamped on each page!”—Reader to Reader Reviews

Book excerpt: Dr. Tuthill embarked on her first safari into the African bush in 2003, honoring the death of her best friend, the astronaut Kalpana Chawla, in the crash of the space shuttle Columbia. She and her husband fell deeply in love with the animals and the people they met in the wilds of southern Africa, and the experience changed their lives. They have traveled back every year and lovingly chronicled each experience in detailed letters to Kalpana's sisters in India. The letters follow the daily routine in remote bush camps, covering the details of camp life along with the excitement and thrill of walking safaris, canoe trips, and game drives. One can almost hear the hippos by night and smell the fresh lavender along the path, as Tuthill describes the nightly "sundowners" enjoyed with her beloved husband, and details the spectacular views and experiences they shared together. In this poignant set of travel essays Tuthill depicts the glories of ecotravel and demonstrates how our vacation dollars can be used to help save the continent of Africa.

Book excerpt: Three rabbit friends discover what they are best at: Darcy finds no other rabbit can outperform him in digging, Farold realizes that he is the best runner, and Howell's long ears enable him to hear over very long distances. Each of the three rabbits is very proud of their own ability and anticipates recognition from their friends. When they meet, each of them is only focused on talking about his own qualities without listening the others. Their individual believes that their own skills are the most important skill for a rabbit to have result in a loud and passionate argument that catches the attention of a hungry lynx. The lynx captures the rabbits and takes them to his hut to cook them for lunch. In order to have his hands free for the meal preparation, the lynx puts the rabbits under a metal cage with a heavy rock on top to keep them from escaping. He then goes about the process of meal preparation with the scared rabbits looking on. Under pressure, the story tells how the rabbits realize that individual skills are useless for an escape....unless they combine their abilities. A clever and well-planned combination of Darcy's digging, Farold's speed and Howell's listening skills might just work. When an innocent child vanishes in a red mist within a few short feet of Al, a reporter on special assignment, the trauma propells him into the nightmare of PTSD. Later, the death of his own child adds to the hellish pit of his life. Nightmares of the vanishing child are joined by the crying sounds of an infant he is sure is his own child. Becoming a homeless shell of a man, propped up by whiskey, he wanders the lifeless steel and concrete skeletons of the city. Surrounded by garbage cans filled with coffee grounds and dirty cups, Al is offered a lifeline. Would his new friends help him overcome the nightmares and finally find peace? So much depended on it. There he discovers part of the truth from the only two people who hold a key to it. Realizing his life is meant for a greater purpose, Al heads north to work at a regional newspaper owned by his old boss. Mysteries nearly three hundred years old surface and send him investigating. At the River's Edge Diner, Al finally finds his purpose and the answers to questions he and all humanity are asking. "Encounter at River's Edge is in my top ten of the novels I've read. Book excerpt: Take a journey into the heart of West Africa... Artist, musician, and author Dave Kobrenski takes the reader on a musical and visual journey up the Djoliba river in Guinea to explore ancient music traditions, as well as to understand the challenges that face a country "balancing between the world of its ancient traditions and the frontier of modern ideals and influences." Dozens of original paintings and drawings accompany vivid first-hand accounts of the music, culture, and people of Guinea, while scores of rhythm notations make this a unique and valuable resource for musicians, educators, and travel enthusiasts alike. From the author's preface: "Part travelogue, part sketchbook, this is a book about glimpsing in the everyday dust of existence the potential for rich and meaningful expressions of being in the world; of seeing that beyond the tattered common cloth of life hangs a veil of mystery infused with magic and wonder."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rivers run deeply through the American consciousness. American Indians speculated about their origins in myths and legends. Settlers and adventurers exulted in their promise. Poets, artists, and songwriters paid tribute to their beauty. Engineers exploited their potential, and conservationists pleaded for their protection. The diversity of waterways, the range of their idiosyncracies, and the variety of responses they have inspired evoke the richness and complexity of the North American continent. For everyone who has listened to a river's song or floated along its surface or played on its banks, here is a book of images and voices which does justice to the beauty and diversity of rivers. The selections range from Samuel Sewell's mournful praise of the River Merrymak to John Wesley Powell's triumphant narrative on exploring the Colorado River, from Walt Whitman's ode on crossing Brooklyn Ferry to Oscar Hammerstein's melodic tribute to Ol? Man River. More than fifty descriptions, meditations, and songs, with brief introductory notes, are balanced by sixty illustrations, including the elegant landscape paintings of Albert Bierstadt, the landscapes of Frederic Church, and the haunting photographs of Ansel Adams.

Book excerpt: David Brower, who has always regretted the Sierra Club's failure to save the Glen Canyon, called it The Place No One Knew. But Katie Lee was among a handful of men and women who knew the 170 miles of Glen Canyon very well. She'd made sixteen trips down the river, even named some of the side canyons. Glen Canyon and the river that ran through it had changed her life. Her descriptions of a magnificent desert oasis and its rich archaeological ruins are a paean to paradise lost.In 1963, the U.S. Government's Bureau of Reclamation (the Wreck-the-nation bureau, Katie calls it) shut off the flow of the Colorado River at Glen Canyon Dam, beginning the process of flooding this natural treasure. Two generations have been born since the dam was built, and in a few more decades there may be no one alive who will have known the place. Katie Lee won't forget Glen Canyon, and she doesn't want anyone else to forget it either. She tells us what there was to love about Glen Canyon and why we should miss it. The canyon had great personal significance for her: She had gone to Hollywood to make her career as an actress and a singer, but the river kept calling her back, showing her a better way to live. She very eloquently weaves her personal story into her breathtaking descriptions of the trips she made down the canyon. In recent years, Katie has found allies in her struggle to restore the canyon. The Glen Canyon Institute has been joined by the Sierra Club in calling for the draining of Lake Powell (Rez Foul, in Katie's words), and the idea is being debated on editorial pages across the country and in congressional hearings. All My Rivers Are Gone celebrates a great American landscape, mournsits loss, and challenges us to undo the damage and forever prevent such mindless destruction in the future.
