Download or read book The Sound of Pictures written by Andrew Ford and published by ReadHowYouWant.com. This book was released on 2011-02 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sound of Pictures is an illuminating journey through the soundtracks of more than 400 films. How do filmmakers play with sound? And how does that affect the way we watch their movies? Whether pop or classical, sweeping or sparse, music plays a crucial role in our cinematic experience. Other sounds can be even more evocative: the sounds of nature, of cities and of voices. In The Sound of Pictures, Andrew Ford listens to the movies. He speaks to acclaimed directors and composers, discovering radically different views about how much music to use and when. And he explores some of cinema's most curious sonic moments. How did Alfred Hitchcock use music to plant clues in his films? Why do some ?mix-tape? soundtracks work brilliantly and others fall flat? How do classics from A Clockwork Orange to The Godfather, Cinema Paradiso to High Noon, use music and sound effects to enhance what we see on screen? Whether you're a film-buff or a music lover, The Sound of Pictures will enrich your experience of the movies.
Book Synopsis The Culture of the Sound Image in Prewar Japan by : Michael Raine
Download or read book The Culture of the Sound Image in Prewar Japan written by Michael Raine and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-03 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays explores the development of electronic sound recording in Japanese cinema, radio, and popular music to illuminate the interrelationship of aesthetics, technology, and cultural modernity in prewar Japan. Putting the cinema at the center of a "culture of the sound image", it restores complexity to a media transition that is often described simply as slow and reluctant. In that vibrant sound culture, the talkie was introduced on the radio before it could be heard in the cinema, and pop music adaptations substituted for musicals even as cinema musicians and live narrators resisted the introduction of recorded sound. Taken together, the essays show that the development of sound technology shaped the economic structure of the film industry and its labour practices, the intermedial relation between cinema, radio, and popular music, as well as the architecture of cinemas and the visual style of individual Japanese films and filmmakers.

Book Synopsis Deleuze and Film Music by : Gregg Redner
Download or read book Deleuze and Film Music written by Gregg Redner and published by Intellect Books. This book was released on 2010-12-15 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The analysis of film music is emerging as one of the fastest-growing areas of interest in film studies. Yet scholarship in this up-and-coming field has been beset by the lack of a common language and methodology between film and music theory. Drawing on the philosophy of Gilles Deleuze, film studies scholar Gregg Redner provides a much-needed analysis of the problem which then forms the basis of his exploration of the function of the film score and its relation to film's other elements. Not just a groundbreaking examination of persistent difficulties in this new area of study, Deleuze and Film Music also offers a solution—a methodological bridge—that will take film music analysis to a new level.
Book Synopsis Word, Sound, Image by : Saskia Kersenboom
Download or read book Word, Sound, Image written by Saskia Kersenboom and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-08-25 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This original and radical book challenges dominant parameters of literacy by comparing the oral tradition of the Tamils in South India with the Western culture of printed text. In India, traditional texts are always performed; as a result, form and meaning can change depending on the occasion. This is the opposite of Western communication through publication which is a static representation of knowledge. The author examines the reasons for the differences between the Indian and Western textual traditions, and describes how text lives through the performing arts of words, sound and imagery. She argues that interactive multimedia is the first Western communication form to represent oral traditions effectively.

Book Synopsis Film Music: A History by : James Wierzbicki
Download or read book Film Music: A History written by James Wierzbicki and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-01-21 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Film Music: A History explains the development of film music by considering large-scale aesthetic trends and structural developments alongside socioeconomic, technological, cultural, and philosophical circumstances. The book’s four large parts are given over to Music and the "Silent" Film (1894--1927), Music and the Early Sound Film (1895--1933), Music in the "Classical-Style" Hollywood Film (1933--1960), and Film Music in the Post-Classic Period (1958--2008). Whereas most treatments of the subject are simply chronicles of "great film scores" and their composers, this book offers a genuine history of film music in terms of societal changes and technological and economic developments within the film industry. Instead of celebrating film-music masterpieces, it deals—logically and thoroughly—with the complex ‘machine’ whose smooth running allowed those occasional masterpieces to happen and whose periodic adjustments prompted the large-scale twists and turns in film music’s path.
