Book excerpt: The Key West fire that burns in my soul didn't start as a conflagration. It started as a nice warm sun on my face-and it started at Mallory Square. Imagine stumbling upon a beach party on a small tropical island, with barely clad natives, their bodies glistening with sweat, dancing to primal drum beats, smoking ritual herbs, and drinking rum from coconuts as the sun sank slowly into the ocean. It sounds like a steamy novel, but I swear it's all true. It's said that Paradise is where your realities are more exciting than your Fantasies. This book chronicles my journey through those Key West realities.
Book Synopsis The Book that Made Your World by : Vishal Mangalwadi
Download or read book The Book that Made Your World written by Vishal Mangalwadi and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2012-10-24 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understand where we came from. Whether you're an avid student of the Bible or a skeptic of its relevance, The Book That Made Your World will transform your perception of its influence on virtually every facet of Western civilization. Indian philosopher Vishal Mangalwadi reveals the personal motivation that fueled his own study of the Bible and systematically illustrates how its precepts became the framework for societal structure throughout the last millennium. From politics and science, to academia and technology, the Bible's sacred copy became the key that unlocked the Western mind. Through Mangalwadi's wide-ranging and fascinating investigation, you'll discover: What triggered the West's passion for scientific, medical, and technological advancement How the biblical notion of human dignity informs the West's social structure and how it intersects with other worldviews How the Bible created a fertile ground for women to find social and economic empowerment How the Bible has uniquely equipped the West to cultivate compassion, human rights, prosperity, and strong families The role of the Bible in the transformation of education How the modern literary notion of a hero has been shaped by the Bible's archetypal protagonist Journey with Mangalwadi as he examines the origins of a civilization's greatness and the misguided beliefs that threaten to unravel its progress. Learn how the Bible transformed the social, political, and religious institutions that have sustained Western culture for the past millennium, and discover how secular corruption endangers the stability and longevity of Western civilization. Endorsements: “This is an extremely significant piece of work with huge global implications. Vishal brings a timely message.” (Ravi Zacharias, author, Walking from East to West and Beyond Opinion) “In polite society, the mere mention of the Bible often introduces a certain measure of anxiety. A serious discussion on the Bible can bring outright contempt. Therefore, it is most refreshing to encounter this engaging and informed assessment of the Bible’s profound impact on the modern world. Where Bloom laments the closing of the American mind, Mangalwadi brings a refreshing optimism.” (Stanley Mattson, founder and president, C. S. Lewis Foundation) “Vishal Mangalwadi recounts history in very broad strokes, always using his cross-cultural perspectives for highlighting the many benefits of biblical principles in shaping civilization.” (George Marsden, professor, University of Notre Dame; author, Fundamentalism and American Culture)

Book Synopsis The Jews of Key West by : Arlo Haskell
Download or read book The Jews of Key West written by Arlo Haskell and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literary Nonfiction. Jewish Studies. History. 2017 Florida Book Award, Phillip and Dana Zimmerman Gold Medal for Florida Nonfiction. The dramatic story of South Florida's oldest Jewish community and a major addition to the history of this unique island city. Long before Miami was on the map, Key West had Florida's largest economy and an influential Jewish community. Jews who settled here as peddlers in the nineteenth century joined a bilingual and progressive city that became the launching pad for the revolution that toppled the Spanish Empire in Cuba. As dozens of local Jews collaborated with José Martí's rebels, they built relationships that supported thriving Jewish communities in Key West and Havana at the turn of the twentieth century. During the 1920s, when anti-immigration hysteria swept the United States, Key West's Jews resisted the immigration quotas and established "the southernmost terminal of the Jewish underground," smuggling Jewish aliens in small boats across the Florida Straits to safety in Key West. But these and other Jewish exploits were kept secret as Ku Klux Klan leaders infiltrated local law enforcement and government. Many Jews left Key West during the 1930s and their stories were ignored or forgotten by the mythmakers that reinvented Key West as a tourist mecca. Arlo Haskell's THE JEWS OF KEY WEST is an entertaining and authoritative account of Key West's Jewish community from 1823-1969. Illustrated with over 100 images, it brings to life a history that had long been forgotten.

Book Synopsis Restoring America's Soul by : Rita M. Dunaway
Download or read book Restoring America's Soul written by Rita M. Dunaway and published by . This book was released on 2019-03-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Restoring America's Soul lays out a clear, concise and inspired vision of what made America such an exceptional nation and how we can get there again. Today's culture derides and dismisses the traditional, time-proven values that made America great--so-called conservative values. Liberal professors, the mainstream news media, and the Hollywood propaganda machine are brainwashing the nation's youth, convincing them that conservativism--the values once held by most of America--amounts to hateful extremism. Nothing could be further from the truth. The true heart of conservatism is its desire to conserve the timeless principles worthy of being kept and to pursue virtue through disciplined self-governance. Too many modern conservatives have lost sight of the transcendent goals that made America great and stand out from the rest of the world. Restoring America's Soul reignites the vision and mission of authentic conservatism and equips busy people to make a fresh and persuasive case for conservative public policy positions on specific key issues. Restoring America's Soul examines conservative's current identity crisis and how it has undermined their effectiveness in attracting citizens and motivating them to become both informed and politically active. Contrasting the popular perceptions of the two major parties, Dunaway urges conservatives to focus more energy on telling others what they support than what they oppose. She reminds conservatives of their noble roots, affirming their ideological alignment with the Founding Fathers' biblical plan for a limited federal government. Rather than solely opposing liberal-left policies, Restoring America's Soul offers genuine solutions to today's multiple crises. Refreshingly, Dunaway suggests an enlightened course forward for the thoughtful conservative.
Book Synopsis Constructing Cuban America by : Andrew Gomez
Download or read book Constructing Cuban America written by Andrew Gomez and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2024-09-17 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "On July 4th, 1876, during the centennial celebration of U.S. independence, the city of Key West held a different type of celebration. In some areas in post-Civil War Florida, Black residents were hindered from 4th of July festivities, which would lead to reflecting on the events of the Civil War. However, Key West's celebration, led by a Cuban revolutionary mayor working in concert with a city council composed of Afro-Bahamians, Cubans, African Americans, and Anglos, marked the centennial in the halls of an institution that boasted an interracial school and proudly hung a Cuban flag outside its building. Deep into the Radical Reconstruction era, this represented one of the most profound exercises in interracial democracy. Gomez explores how race shaped the first Cuban-American communities in South Florida, specifically in Key West and Tampa, which were the locations of the first groups of Cuban Americans, with race being a central factor of unity and division during Radical Reconstruction, the Cuban independence movement, Jim Crow, and Cuba's 1912 Race War. While looking at factors such as ethnicity, gender, labor and foreign policy, Gomez makes the argument that Cuban-American interracial unity in the nineteenth century disintegrated due to the racism held by white Cuban-Americans, which then led Black Cubans to organize with Florida's multiethnic Black communities"--
