Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Soteriology of the New Testament The call for a preface to a new edition has been the occasion of serious reflection upon the question of a general revision of the book. After careful weighing of the considerations on both sides, I have decided against it, mainly for the following reasons. While coming slowly, chiefly upon exegetical grounds, to the conclusions embodied in the Soteriology, I was aware of no contemporaneous or recent thought upon the main lines therein developed. There was as yet 'scarcely a symptom' of the great outburst of Christological discussion that has since taken place. Within a short period an able and abundant literature has sprang up, to which additions are almost daily appearing. But the main questions remain unsolved, and we are in the midst of issues and controversies no less vital and stirring than those of the Conciliar or the Reformation periods. Such discussions are not to be deprecated; they are not more painful nor less wholesome than they have ever been, and in the end they will bring us, as they have done before, nearer to the great central heart of Christianity. I hope for an opportunity to express my own more developed and definite views on some of these matters, and prefer, therefore, to defer to that occasion any revision or restatement of my views I may have to make. "Instead, it presents us with a variety of pictures taken from different perspectives." As the author seeks to understand their implications for people of faith, she uncovers how New Testament images provide the building blocks of the master story of redemption.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soteriology: A Dogmatic Treatise on the Redemption The Redemption could not have been effected by a mediator who was either mere God or mere man. It required one who was both God and man. Christ, alone, being both God and man, was in a position to act as natural and moral mediator and to reconcile the human race to its Creator. We have shown in a previous treatise that Christology1 is founded on the doctrine of the Hypostatic Union. Similarly, Soteriology turns on the pivotal concept of the mediatorship of Christ and may be said to be implicitly contained in 2 Cor. V, 19: God indeed was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this comprehensive exposition, a leading New Testament scholar explores the unfolding theological unity of the entire Bible from the vantage point of the New Testament. G. K. Beale, coeditor of the award-winning Commentary on the New Testament Use of the Old Testament, examines how the New Testament storyline relates to and develops the Old Testament storyline. Beale argues that every major concept of the New Testament is a development of a concept from the Old and is to be understood as a facet of the inauguration of the latter-day new creation and kingdom. Offering extensive interaction between the two testaments, this volume helps readers see the unifying conceptual threads of the Old Testament and how those threads are woven together in Christ. This major work will be valued by students of the New Testament and pastors alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are saved by faith when we trust that Jesus died for our sins. This is the gospel, or so we are taught. But what is faith? And does this accurately summarize the gospel? Because faith is frequently misunderstood and the climax of the gospel misidentified, the gospel's full power remains untapped. While offering a fresh proposal for what faith means within a biblical theology of salvation, Matthew Bates presses the church toward a new precision: we are saved solely by allegiance to Jesus the king. Instead of faith alone, Christians must speak about salvation by allegiance alone. The book includes discussion questions for students, pastors, and church groups and a foreword by Scot McKnight.
