Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Son of Man: Or Contributions to the Study of the Thoughts of Jesus Hat Jesus is reported in all our gospels - the fourth as well as the three - to have frequently spoken of Himself in the third person as the Son of Man is known to all. But why He thus spoke, and in what sense He used the term, are disputed questions. In the Greek of our gospels it is, literally, the son of the man. What it was in the Aramaic of Christ's words critics are not agreed. Many maintain that He used it as the title of a Messianic, or (which is not the same thing) a supernatural, character. Some assert that He did not use it at all. Being therefore confessedly a subject of critical controversy, the interpretation of Christ's title is liable to be put on one side by some readers of the Gospel who, though careful students of its thought, are not experts in the verbal criticism bearing on it. They may be disposed to decide that about the subject of so much discussion and divergent opinion it is not their business to spend time, since there can be little fruit for their labour. In arrest of this decision, the author ven tures to Offer the following considerations. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1910, this book contains an exhaustive study of the use of the phrase 'Son of Man' in the Old and New Testaments. Abbott illustrates how Christian writers used the mystical trope present in many books of Jewish prophecy to convey their belief in Christ as an eschatological figure foretold by Scripture. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in Christology and the use of this enigmatic title in Jewish and Christian theology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The title 'Son of Man' in the Gospel of John is an apocalyptic reference that highlights, among a number of things, that Jesus is a heavenly figure. Benjamin E. Reynolds analyzes the background of 'Son of Man' from the 'one like a son of man' in Daniel 7 and the interpretations of this figure in Jewish apocalyptic and early Christian literature. Although there is no established 'Son of Man concept', the Danielic son of man is interpreted with common characteristics that suggest there was at least some general understanding of this figure in the Second Temple period. The author shows that these common characteristics are noticeable throughout the Son of Man sayings in John's Gospel. The context and the interpretation of these sayings point to an understanding of the Johannine Son of Man similar to those in the interpretations of the Danielic figure. However, even though these similarities exist, the Johannine figure is distinct from the previous interpretations, just as they are distinct from one another. One obvious difference is the present reality of the Son of Man's role in judgment and salvation. The Johannine Son of Man is an apocalyptic figure, and thus 'Son of Man' does not function to draw attention to Jesus' humanity in the Gospel of John. Nor is the title synonymous with 'Son of God'. 'Son of Man' may overlap in meaning with other titles, particularly 'Son of God' and 'Messiah', but 'Son of Man' points to aspects of Jesus' identity that are not indicated by any other title. Along with the other titles, it helps to present a richer Christological portrait of the Johannine Jesus.

Book excerpt: When scholars have set Jesus against various conceptions of the "messiah" and other reemptive figures in early Jewish expectation, those questions have been bound up with the problem of violence, whether the political violence of a militant messiah or the divine violence carried out by a heavenly or angelic figure. Simon J. Joseph enters the wide-ranging discussion of violence in the Bible, taking up questions of Jesus of Nazareth's relationship to the violence of revolutionary militancy and apocalyptic fantasy alike, and proposes an innovative new approach. Missing from past discussions, Joseph contends, is the unique conception of an Adamic redeemer figure in the Enochic material--a conception that informed the Q tradition and, he argues, Jesus' own self-understanding.

Book excerpt: 'Son of Man' is practically the only self-designation employed by Jesus himself in the gospels, but is used in such a way that no hint is left of any particular theological significance. Still, during the first many centuries of the church, the expression as it was reused was given content, first literally as signifying Christ's human nature. Later 'Son of Man' was thought to be a christological title in its own right. Today, many scholars are inclined to think that, in an original Aramaic of an historical Jesus, it was little more than a rhetorical circumlocution, referring to the one speaking. Mogens Müller's 'The Expression 'Son of Man' and the Development of Christology: A History of Interpretation' is the first study of the 'Son of Man' trope, which traces the history of interpretation from the Apostolic Fathers to the present, concluding that the various interpretations of this phrase reflect little more than the various doctrinal assumptions held by its interpreters over centuries.

Book excerpt: It is essential to understand the origin, meaning, and use of the term "Son of Man" if the Gospels are to be intelligently interpreted, but no phrase has in recent years caused so much scholarly debate and division of opinion. Dr Hooker studies the term and concepts associated with it in the Old Testament, in I Enoch, and in other inter-testamental literature, and then examines the Marcan occurrences in the context of the Gospel as a whole, finding a coherent pattern throughout, in term of which each occurrence has its proper relevance. The book thus offers a challenge to the present trend of interpretation which has recently been strengthened by the studies of A. J. B. Higgins and H. E. Tödt, but its conclusions are reached without conservative presuppositions, and with a thorough study of the evidence. The importance of this book for New Testament studies is assured. --
