Book excerpt: While working the Midnight shift 12AM until 8AM as a police officer in Chicago on Christmas eve I would often fancy myself one of the shepherds watching over the flocks, of citizens. Aside from the dispatchers breaking the radio silence with their possible sightings of Santa Clause things were usually quiet. I had the same feelings when I was deployed overseas. One of my most vivid recollections of the Army was in Haiti Christmas 1994. I was standing on the back of a HMMWV Humvee, Hummer singing Christmas carols with the local children of Les Cayes. They knew all the words to "Angels We Have Heard On High", "Les Anges dans Nos Campagnes" in French. That Christmas Eve, surrounded by the children, I felt a power in the air. Again, I felt like a shepherd watching over the flocks. So, as a kid I wanted to fight evil. I wanted to be some sort of super hero. I wanted to be a leader and protector. I had the pleasure of being better than any superhero. I was a soldier and police officer. Being a Soldier gave me the opportunity to be a leader and being a Police officer allowed me to protect. Neither profession is on the celebrity list like Superman, Wonder Woman or Batman would be. So, I wondered who on Christmas Eve would have been the closest persons to become unlikely heroes. It was the Shepherds. They are the only ones on that night to whom the Angel of the Lord appeared. They were the only ones who saw the heavenly host. Other than witnessing the existence of the Christ Child did God have another mission in mind for them? This is the story of what may have happened as the shepherds returned to the flocks. The story is not meant to be a prophecy. I did not do any in depth study of the scripture to prove a thesis. It is merely me putting the imagination on paper. I still have the romanticism of a 13-year-old.Please accept this short Christmas Combat Story.

Try to escape, the American soldiers warned catholic Chaplain Emil Kapaun. However, he refused to leave his wounded comrades and became a POW. His decision marked a turning point in the inspiring life of this young priest. Kapaun's faith and courage on the battlefield and in prison set an example for hundreds of young American captives. When they were starving, he stole food for them. If the men needed encouragement, he defied prison rules and prayed with them. When the communist guards mocked his faith in God, the chaplain publicly defended his heliefs. When Kapaun became sick, the communists denied him medicine and watched him die in their vermin-infested hospital. However, they could not extinguish the memories of how he served other prisoners. The Army awarded the chaplain the Distinguished Service Cross and the Vatican named him Servant of God. This book is a well-documented biography of an extraordinary person.

Book excerpt: Follow the incredible journey of one piece of paper—a copy of Psalm 23—as it travels around the world, linking lives and hearts with its simple but beautiful message. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures… Shortly before a tragic car accident, Kate McConnell wrote down the powerful words of Psalm 23 on a piece of paper for her wayward son. Just before she loses consciousness, Kate wonders if she’s done enough with her life and prays,“Please, let my life count.” Unbeknownst to Kate, her handwritten copy of Psalm 23 soon begins a remarkable journey around the world. From a lonely dry cleaning employee to a soldier wounded in Iraq, to a young Kurdish girl fleeing her country, to a Kenyan runner in the Rome Invitational Marathon, this humble message forever changes the lives of twelve very different people. Eventually, Kate’s paper makes it back to its starting place, and she discovers the unexpected ways that God changes lives, even through the smallest gestures. With beautiful prose evocative of master storyteller Andy Andrews’s The Butterfly Effect, this “intriguing…[and] inspiring read” (RT Book Reviews) will touch your heart and remind you of the ways God works through us to reach beyond what we can imagine.

Book excerpt: Shepherd Boy, Barnabas, and his twin sister, Phoebe, think their lives have ended when their father dies and their step-uncle Andreas puts them to work in his Cypriot household as slaves under his nasty steward, Dimitrios. But Andreas is a trader and hears about an 'opportunity' near Jerusalem where he can sell flocks of sheep and he needs Barnabas' expertise. On the journey they are joined by red-haired slave, Torna, and Alex, a young sailor on Andreas' ship. The journey to Jerusalem is eventful and in their many adventures Barnabas meets not only pirates but justice, Roman style! They finally manage to deliver the flock to a buyer but then find that they've lost the prize ram and a few ewes. This leads the twins to Bethlehem and a stable where an awe-inspiring baby lies in a crib. They live in harsh times and Herod's spies are everywhere; their return journey is every bit as eventful - particularly as they have to try and outwit both Roman and Herodian soldiers.

Excerpt: "THE writer of this little book was not satisfied that her children should hear nothing but fairy tales and the stories of nursery life, now so popular. But she could find nothing else fit to read to them. There are, indeed, plenty of storybooks drawing their materials from history, and professing to be intended for children."

Book excerpt: “The indelible imprint of sacred music drama throughout history is undeniable . . . and its resurgence in the twentieth and twentieth-first centuries stirs the curiosity.” Carl Gerbrandt, in pursuing these issues, has brought to our fingertips a stimulating historical perspective on sacred music drama as well as an extensively annotated list of repertoire. Years of research have gone into providing information on centuries of sacred music dramas/operas which for the most part have been known to very few. Included in these pages of his Second Edition are over 330 sacred music dramas/operas, each with scholarly and practical information that will be of interest and great value to the opera director, the performer, the scholar, the conductor and the church musician. Gerbrandt's SETTING THE STAGE section is an enlightening overview of sacred music history. The repertoire selected includes works from the Middle Ages to works being written today. Each work is reviewed with regard to the source of libretto, the style and difficulty of its musical content, the date and location of the first performance, the number of acts and scenes, and the performance length of the work. Additionally, each role is listed by name and voicing, and in most cases, the vocal range is indicated. The choral demands, orchestrations and dance requirements are identified. A thorough plot synopsis as well as the location of scores and parts is given. Ten appendices cross-reference textual sources and topical content while assisting in the selection of works for worship services or theatrical performances. Select contact information of publishers and composers in also included. Sacred Music Drama: The Producer’s Guide fills a long standing void by acquainting directors, students, performers and interested readers with the numerous sacred music dramas which are available.

Book excerpt: Reading the World’s Stories is volume 5 in the Bridges to Understanding series of annotated international youth literature bibliographies sponsored by the United States Board on Books for Young People. USBBY is the United States chapter of the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY), a Switzerland-based nonprofit whose mission is bring books and children together. The series promotes sharing international children’s books as a way to facilitate intercultural understanding and meet new literary voices. This volume follows Children’s Books from Other Countries (1998), The World though Children’s Books (2002), Crossing Boundaries with Children’s Books (2006), and Bridges to Understanding: Envisioning the World through Children’s Books (2011) and acts as a companion book to the earlier titles. Centered around the theme of the importance of stories, the guide is a resource for discovering more recent global books that fit many reading tastes and educational needs for readers aged 0-18 years. Essays by storyteller Anne Pellowski, author Beverley Naidoo, and academic Marianne Martens offer a variety of perspectives on international youth literature. This latest installment in the series covers books published from 2010-2014 and includes English-language imports as well as translations of children’s and young adult literature first published outside of the United States. These books are supplemented by a smaller number of culturally appropriate books from the US to help fill in gaps from underrepresented countries. The organization of the guide is geographic by region and country. All of the more than 800 entries are recommended, and many of the books have won awards or achieved other recognition in their home countries. Forty children’s book experts wrote the annotations. The entries are indexed by author, translator, illustrator, title, and subject. Back matter also includes international book awards, important organizations and research collections, and a selected directory of publishers known for publishing books from other countries.
