Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was time to stop cowering and come out from their hiding places. The storm was over, the angry skies were gone. Everything should return to normal. Help would be coming and they would have the electricity back on soon. But the fires still burned, the violence got worse and there was no one to stop it. The Red Cross didn't arrive with tents and hot food. The National Guard didn't put a stop to the looting and bloodshed. There were no police, no fire department, no hospitals and no running water. The stores shelves were empty and there weren't any trucks coming to replenish them. Millions flee the cities but there is nowhere to go and nothing to eat. Natasha and her three friends try to escape the ruins of New York City on horses they took from their college. Only a few others knew of her people's haven in Maine, however, rumors spread. Desperate people will do desperate things and a new ruthless leader arises. With an army of society's worst from Rikers Island, a horde of raiders give chase to seize the only food supply that will keep them alive through the winter. Book 2 in this thrilling new EMP/CME Post-Apocalyptic tale from best-selling author David A. Simpson. This disaster series is perfect for fans of Kyla Stone, A.G. Riddle, Bobby Akart, Jack Hunt, and Ryan Schow.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physics of Geomagnetic phenomena, Volume I covers the significant advances in geomagnetism and the penetrations into the generation of geomagnetic field phenomena. This volume is composed of three chapters. Chapter I deals briefly with the discovery and developments in geomagnetism, followed by discussions on some fundamental topics of the field, including the aurora and geomagnetic storms. This chapter also considers the instruments, geomagnetic stations, and the correlations between geomagnetic indices. Chapter II describes the magnetic properties of minerals and various processes of acquisition of remanent magnetization. This chapter also provides palaeomagnetic data for the direction and intensity of the geomagnetic field in ancient times. Chapter III explores geomagnetic variations caused by solar flares and eclipses. This book will prove useful to physicists, students in upper atmospheric and space topics, and scientists in allied fields with a background in geomagnetism.

Book excerpt: Planet Earth is part of our Galactic environment, not just the product of it, and it is still today influenced by phenomena related to Galactic forces. Specifically, our planet is affected by its near environment, in particular the small bodies in the Solar System. This book reviews the processes which cause the collisions of these small bodies with the Earth as well as the consequences of such collisions. The various articles take the reader through the Galaxy-Solar System connection to the orbital dynamics of the small bodies and to their number and distribution in near-Earth space. The hazards of the impacts of small bodies on Earth are evaluated, and the geophysical records of such impacts are discussed. The book takes the reader to the forefront of research on both impact cratering and the origin and evolution of small bodies in the Solar System. Thus it brings together two subjects, geophysics and astronomy, which are usually discussed in separate volumes but are closely knit together in this particular area of research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evidence from observations and paleoclimate records suggest that solar outputs, including solar irradiance and energy particles, belong to the fundamental natural forces of the climate system. It is consistent that the variation of solar irradiance on the orbital time scale controls glacial interglacial cycle. However, the contribution of solar output fluctuation due to solar activity to decadal to centennial climate change is still contradictory. The common driving force mechanism is then the key role of solar-climate linking research, and the mechanism of solar forcing and the pathway of amplification could be two key scientific problems in climate research. In recent years, a lot of studies have been done on the effects of solar activity on the climate, based on data analysis by observation/reanalysis or mechanism tracking by modeling. The interannual and decadal solar signals in the regional climate were found and the hypothesis of driving mechanisms was proposed. Meanwhile, the potential contribution of solar variability to the current climate prediction has attracted more and more attention. The purpose of this topic is to collect and reveal new results and new understandings about the impact of solar variability on climate.

Book excerpt: From Pulitzer Prize finalist Linda Hogan, Solar Storms tells the moving, “luminous” (Publishers Weekly) story of Angela Jenson, a troubled Native American girl coming of age in the foster system in Oklahoma, who decides to reunite with her family. At seventeen, Angela returns to the place where she was raised—a stunning island town that lies at the border of Canada and Minnesota—where she finds that an eager developer is planning a hydroelectric dam that will leave sacred land flooded and abandoned. Joining up with three other concerned residents, Angela fights the project, reconnecting with her ancestral roots as she does so. Harrowing, lyrical, and boldly incisive, Solar Storms is a powerful examination of the clashes between cultures and traumatic repercussions that have shaped American history.
