Book excerpt: The Eureka Software Factory project (ESF) was set up by a Group of European partners in 1987. Its objective was broadly to improve the large-scale software production process by introducing an industrialised approach to have The Software Factory Challenge social, organisational and technical aspects. The project was set up under the pan-European Eureka programme, and it was funded by the partners together with their national governments. This book is not a history of the ESF project, but rather a presentation of its main ideas and achievements, and an account of how the concepts pioneered by the project have become part of a general movement in both the industrial and academic domains. In this movement, the facility for the production, use and maintenance of large-scale computer artefacts (the Software Factory) is treated in a wide and `organic' way, so as to include concepts such as business value and process improvement; with the development of new technologies being driven by these new, wide requirements. This new approach is in contrast with a narrowly technological one, in which individual tasks like programming are aided by machines but in which the production process as a whole is not supported. The main body of the book is divided into four Parts. Part I gives a short overview of the ESF project and its ideas, and goes on to attempt to place the ESF work in the context of industry as a whole (with reference to both producers and users of Information Technology systems). Part II sets out to explain the technological basis of the Software Factory as seen by ESF and goes on to describe some experimental and pioneering implementations of Factory Support Environments and their constituents. Part III is devoted to the most complete implementation of an ESF Factory Support Environment to date, Kernel/2r. This Section provides a highly detailed discussion of both design and implementation issues. In Part IV addresses what deployment strategies are now available to continue the spread of these ideas in order to meet the goal of better software-based systems (i.e. systems which are safer, more economical to build, more easily changed and more useful than those that have been built up to now). Finally, a Glossary of Terms and a list of References is given. Readers: those who have a professional interest in Information Technology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pervasiveness of software in business makes it crucial that software engineers and developers understand how software development impacts an entire organization. Strategic Software Engineering: An Interdisciplinary Approach presents software engineering as a strategic, business-oriented, interdisciplinary endeavor, rather than simply a technical process, as it has been described in previous publications. The book addresses technical, scientific, and management aspects of software development in a way that is accessible to a wide audience. It provides a detailed, critical review of software development models and processes, followed with a strategic assessment of how process models evolved over time and how to improve them. The authors then focus on the relation between problem-solving techniques and strategies for effectively confronting real-world business problems. They also analyze the impact of interdisciplinary factors on software development, including the role of people and business economics. The book concludes with a brief look at specialized system development. The diverse backgrounds of the authors, encompassing computer science, information systems, technology, and business management, help create this book's integrated approach, which answers the demand for a comprehensive, interdisciplinary outlook encompassing all facets of how software relates to an organization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though Japan has successfully competed with U.S. companies in the manufacturing and marketing of computer hardware, it has been less successful in developing computer programs. This book contains the first detailed analysis of how Japanese firms have tried to redress this imbalance by applying their skills in engineering and production management to software development. Cusumano focuses on the creation of "software factories" in which large numbers of people are engaged in developing software in cooperative ways--i.e. individual programs are not developed in isolation but rather utilize portions of other programs already developed whenever possible, and then yield usable portions for other programs being written. Devoting chapters to working methods at System Developing Corp., Hitachi, Toshiba, NEC, and Fujitsu, and including a comparison of Japanese and U.S. software factories, Cusumano's book will be important reading for all people involved in software and computer technology, as well as those interested in Japanese business and corporate culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together seminal articles by leading scholars of technological and organizational systems, exploring the impact of 'modularity'. Modularity refers to an ability to take apart and put together differenct products and networks, or to 'mix and match' components in order to meet different user specifications. This is of key importance today where new systems such as the World Wide Web and many areas of the computer industry depend on it. The volume pulls together and defines an exciting new area of inquiry: into how our 'modular age' is reshaping the business eco-system. Includes contributions from leading scholars of technology and organization Modularity refers to an ability to take apart and put together different products and systems, or to 'mix and match' components in order to meet different user specifications. Consolidates and defines an area of inquiry that is becoming increasingly important with the development of web-based and 'network' industries. Sensitizes readers to the complexity of issues surrounding new modular products and systems created by e-business Encourages readers to make connections among different levels and disciplines. Initiates a debate around issues of modularity. Includes a commentary co-authored by the late Nobel Laureate Herbert A. Simon to whom the book is dedicated.

Book excerpt: When it comes to solving complex problems, we often perform elaborate rituals in the guise of best practices that promise a world of order, certainty, and control. But reality paints a far different picture, which practitioners are often reluctant to discuss. A witty yet rigorous journey through the seedy underbelly of organisational problem solving, The Heretic’s Guide to Best Practices pinpoints the reasons why best practices don’t work as advertised and what can be done about it. “Hugely enjoyable, deeply reflective, and intensely practical. This book is about weaving human artistry and improvisation, with appropriate methods and technologies, in order to pool collective intelligence and wisdom under pressure.” —Simon Buckingham Shum, Knowledge Media Institute, The Open University, UK “This is a terrific piece of work: important, insightful, and very entertaining. Culmsee and Awati have produced a refreshing take on the problems that plague organisations... If you’re trying to deal with wicked problems in your organisation, then drop everything and read this book.” —Tim Van Gelder, Principal Consultant, Austhink Consulting

Book excerpt: These proceedings represent the work of contributors to the 23rd European Conference on Research Methodology (ECRM 2024), hosted by ISCAP in Porto, Portugal on 4-5 July 2024. The Conference Co-Chairs are Dr Ana Isabel Azevedo and Dr José Manuel Azevedo, both from ISCAP Portugal. ECRM is a well-established event on the academic research calendar and now in its 23rd year and remains an opportunity for participants to share ideas and meet. The aims and scope of this conference is to bring together researchers from a range of disciplines and sectors to share expertise and novel approaches in business and management research methods. ECRM is interested in contributions on the subject of research methods used in business and management research. The papers tend to either focus directly on creating and implementing innovative methodologies or research papers which highlight an interesting use of methodologies in their study. The opening keynote presentation is given by Marta Agostinho, Executive Director of EU-LIFE with the title Excellent Scientific Research: What Does it Mean and Why Should we Care About it? On the second day, Professor Susanne Tietze from The University of Sheffield Hallam, UK will give a talk on the subject Cross-Language Research Methods: Translation and Linguistic Reflexivity. With an initial submission of 90 abstracts, after the double blind, peer review process there are 30 Academic research papers, 1 PhD research paper, 1 Masters Research paper and 1 work-in-progress paper published in these Conference Proceedings. These papers represent research from India, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Estonia, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Morocco, Norway, Oman, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, South Africa, Sweden, UK and the USA.
