Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sociology of a New York City Block The chief basis for the classification of these nationalities has been the mass of observations made in three system atic visitations of all the families. The first of these was made in the fall of 1897, the second in the fall of 1899, and the third in 1900-1901. Since then the street has been irregularly observed and studied, and interesting facts have thus been gathered that could not be obtained at the time of the regular visitations. Book Synopsis The New York Nobody Knows by : William B. Helmreich
Download or read book The New York Nobody Knows written by William B. Helmreich and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-08-25 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As a kid growing up in Manhattan, William Helmreich played a game with his father they called "Last Stop." They would pick a subway line and ride it to its final destination, and explore the neighborhood there. Decades later, Helmreich teaches university courses about New York, and his love for exploring the city is as strong as ever. Putting his feet to the test, he decided that the only way to truly understand New York was to walk virtually every block of all five boroughs--an astonishing 6,000 miles. His epic journey lasted four years and took him to every corner of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island. Helmreich spoke with hundreds of New Yorkers from every part of the globe and from every walk of life, including Mayor Michael Bloomberg and former mayors Rudolph Giuliani, David Dinkins, and Edward Koch. Their stories and his are the subject of this captivating and highly original book. We meet the Guyanese immigrant who grows beautiful flowers outside his modest Queens residence in order to always remember the homeland he left behind, the Brooklyn-raised grandchild of Italian immigrants who illuminates a window of his brownstone with the family's old neon grocery-store sign, and many, many others. Helmreich draws on firsthand insights to examine essential aspects of urban social life such as ethnicity, gentrification, and the use of space. He finds that to be a New Yorker is to struggle to understand the place and to make a life that is as highly local as it is dynamically cosmopolitan."--Publisher's description.

Download or read book The City written by Robert E. Park and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2019-04-15 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1925, The City is a trailblazing text in urban history, urban sociology, and urban studies. Its innovative combination of ethnographic observation and social science theory epitomized the Chicago school of sociology. Robert E. Park, Ernest W. Burgess, and their collaborators were among the first to document the interplay between urban individuals and larger social structures and institutions, seeking patterns within the city’s riot of people, events, and influences. As sociologist Robert J. Sampson notes in his new foreword, though much has changed since The City was first published, we can still benefit from its charge to explain where and why individuals and social groups live as they do.

Book Synopsis A Political Sociology of Educational Knowledge by : Thomas A. Popkewitz
Download or read book A Political Sociology of Educational Knowledge written by Thomas A. Popkewitz and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-01-20 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together the sociology of knowledge, cultural studies, and post-foundational and historical approaches, this book asks what schooling does, and what are its limits and dangers. The focus is on how the systems of reason that govern schooling embody historically generated rules and standards about what is talked about, thought, and acted on; about the "nature" of children; about the practices and paradoxes of educational reform. These systems of reason are examined to consider issues of power, the political, and social exclusion. The transnational perspectives interrelate historical and ethnographic studies of the modern school to explore how curriculum is translated through social and cognitive psychologies that make up the subjects of schooling, and how educational sciences "act" to order and divide what is deemed possible to think and do. The central argument is that taken-for-granted notions of educational change and research paradoxically produce differences that simultaneously include and exclude.
