Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Socio-Economic Impact of Microelectronics contains papers presented at an international conference on socio-economic problems and potentialities of the application of micro-electronics held in Zandvoort, the Netherlands, in September 1979. Organized into eight sections, this book begins with the technological evaluation of microelectronics. Subsequent sections focus on the social economic and political consequences of the widespread use of microelectronics; opportunities and problems for socialist countries brought about by microelectronics technology; effects of microelectronics on developing countries; as well as problems connected with industrial relations and organization of work. The influence of the technology on political/economic, epistemological, ethical/moral, and esthetic values and a broad concept of informatics introducing the notions of living and non-living environments as well as of human, non-human, constructed, natural, and abstract systems are explained. The last section contains the conclusions of the chairman of the conference on the application of microelectronics.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silicon chip technology; microprocessor technology; information technology; or quite simply new technology. These are some of the names representing the microelectronics revolution depending upon the audience being addressed by speaker or writer. No previous new industrial development has caused such widespread publicity and discussion amongst users and researchers as the new technology. Concern is being expressed about the effects of new technology on employment, job satisfaction, social life, leisure activities and the economics of commerce and industry. The late 70s saw many doom-laden predictions of those effects but by 1983 both management and trade unions were taking a more objective view of the social and economic impacts, and many correspondents now see the new technology as a means of opening up new industries and overcoming the effects of world recessions. The "chip" has involved the factory floor, the office, the supermarket and the home. Electronic funds transfer, electronic shopping, microelectronic domestic appliances, word processors and microprocessor-controlled machinery mean that the new technology has pervaded all aspects of social and economic life, and the developed countries are now coming to accept it as part of society as a whole. Inevitably the flood of literature on the social and economic impacts of new technology has been overwhelming. Unfortunately the quality of information and arguments propagated at conferences, in journal papers and research reports has indicated that there has been little quantifiable evidence available on the effects of these impacts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ironically, as telecommunications technology—the embodiment of modernity—advances, bringing people in different nations into more direct contact during conflict situations, traditional cultural factors become increasingly important as differing ways of thinking and acting collide. The mass media can be seen as a factor in the creation of international conflict; they also, claim many scholars, are the key to control and resolution of those problems. Whichever side of the coin one chooses to look at—mass communication as cause or cure of conflict—there is no doubt that the news media are no longer peripheral players on the global scene; they are important participants whose organizational patterns of behavior, values, and motivations must be taken into account in understanding national and international conflict. In this volume, a distinguished group of authors explores the variety of ways the news media—newspapers, radio, and television—are involved in conflict situations. Conflicts between the United States and Iran, India and Pakistan, and the United States and China are examined, and national-level studies in Sri Lanka, Iran, Hong Kong, and the United States provide varied contexts in which the authors look at the complex interrelationships among government, news media, and the public in conflict situations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1991, this book looks at the problems of applying Western computer programmes to the developing world, arguing that the difficulties are as much cultural as technological. The author shows that the underlying models for computer applications are made up from interpretations of reality which are closely related to Western scientific, technological and cultural development originating from the Renaissance. The book includes a case study of an Egyptian manufacturing company, which reveals the actual problems encountered in the process of computerization.

The book stresses world trends that require institutional change and the need to institute innovation in the structures and procedures of government. The text also offers a discussion on the history of social change. Along with this discussion are remarks and suggestions on how to transform social innovations from theory to action. As the world develops, the need to put up social inventions to facilitate the adoption of technical inventions is stressed. With this pointed out, the work of international foundation for social innovation is highlighted. In the research to establish the connection between technological and social innovation, the role of international prizes is of great value. Thus, specific areas for awards and incentives are discussed. The book is a vital source of information for those interested in establishing the relationship of social innovations with the advancement of science and technology.
Book Synopsis Science, Technology and Development by : Mozammel Huq
Download or read book Science, Technology and Development written by Mozammel Huq and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-08-08 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1991. This volume, containing the proceedings of a Conference organised by the Science, Technology and Development (STD) Forum in association with the Developing Countries Research Unit (DCRU), University of Strathclyde, on 9-10 April 1990, is a modest attempt at advancing awareness concerning Third World development mainly in two inter-related areas: (a) the problems faced in the advancement of science and technology in the Third World and (b) the use of scientific and technological knowledge for promoting sustainable development of these countries. Given the multi-disciplinary character of the Conference and, in particular, the variety of approaches adopted by the contributors, any attempt to synthesise the papers in a brief introduction is likely to be futile. The best that can be done is to introduce some of the papers in a brief review. But before that a few words on the objectives of the Conference, and in particular on the need for North-South Cooperation in science, technology and development, may be helpful.
