Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: This study examines variation in infant mortality rate (IMR) between black and white populations. Data were drawn from CDC Birth Cohort Linked Birth Infant Data for 2004. Author examined numerous socioeconomic factors that could explain the gap in IMR between two races. Each potential factor was examined separately before introducing into a complete model. The proposed model explains about 11 percentage points in difference between groups, and showed factors that can be affected by change in public policy, play statistically significant role in IMR disparity. We can look at the IMR as a socioeconomic indicator that highlights both negative and positive developments in society.

Book excerpt: This is a cross sectional descriptive study conducted in four geographical locations in Monrovia, Liberia, namely Bushrodrod Island, Sinkor, Central Monrovia, and Airfield respectively to examine the socio economic determinants of infant mortality amongst women who are reproductive in child bearing. A stratified random sampling was use with a sample size of 400. The main findings of this study are, access to health care, unskilled birth attendants, cultural and traditional practices, birth interval, displaced mothers, household condition and crowding, inadequate breast feeding and malnutrition have significant relationship with infant mortality in Monrovia, Liberia. According to the results of this study, infant mortality has a positive relationship with access to health care at 1% significant level, while birth interval has a negative relationship at 1% significant level. In the same vein, cultural and traditional practices has a positive relationship with infant mortality at 1% significant level. Following the same trend, unskilled birth attendants has a positive relationship with infant mortality at 5% significant level while displaced mothers has a negative relationship with infant mortality at 5% significant level. The study also found that household condition and crowding has a negative relationship with infant mortality at 10% significant level while inadequate breastfeeding and malnutrition also has a negative relationship with infant mortality at 10% significant level. Interestingly, the poverty variable turned out to be insignificant, although its coefficient entered with an expected positive sign, which may be due to regional differences as the results by geographic area indicates. These results provide useful clues for the design of future policies.

Book excerpt: In the United States, some populations suffer from far greater disparities in health than others. Those disparities are caused not only by fundamental differences in health status across segments of the population, but also because of inequities in factors that impact health status, so-called determinants of health. Only part of an individual's health status depends on his or her behavior and choice; community-wide problems like poverty, unemployment, poor education, inadequate housing, poor public transportation, interpersonal violence, and decaying neighborhoods also contribute to health inequities, as well as the historic and ongoing interplay of structures, policies, and norms that shape lives. When these factors are not optimal in a community, it does not mean they are intractable: such inequities can be mitigated by social policies that can shape health in powerful ways. Communities in Action: Pathways to Health Equity seeks to delineate the causes of and the solutions to health inequities in the United States. This report focuses on what communities can do to promote health equity, what actions are needed by the many and varied stakeholders that are part of communities or support them, as well as the root causes and structural barriers that need to be overcome.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year more than 4 million children are born with birth defects. This book highlights the unprecedented opportunity to improve the lives of children and families in developing countries by preventing some birth defects and reducing the consequences of others. A number of developing countries with more comprehensive health care systems are making significant progress in the prevention and care of birth defects. In many other developing countries, however, policymakers have limited knowledge of the negative impact of birth defects and are largely unaware of the affordable and effective interventions available to reduce the impact of certain conditions. Reducing Birth Defects: Meeting the Challenge in the Developing World includes descriptions of successful programs and presents a plan of action to address critical gaps in the understanding, prevention, and treatment of birth defects in developing countries. This study also recommends capacity building, priority research, and institutional and global efforts to reduce the incidence and impact of birth defects in developing countries.

Book excerpt: This cross-sectional study conducted in Hermosillo, the capital of Sonora, Mexico, a state located in the Northwestern Border Region, used secondary data sources from Mexican governmental agencies to examine the completeness and accuracy of cause-of-death statements (CODS) of infant death certificates, as well as its impact on reliability of infant mortality statistics. We found that there are limitations in the quality of CODS in the study setting, which could lead to inappropriate interpretation of infant mortality statistics.
