Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Socialist and the Prince That evening Golden Gate Temple was filled, unto the highest gallery, by laborers, their wives, some curi ous spectators, and the reporters. It was something more than the usual assemblage of discontented when one of their number Speaks. The better sort of artisan was present. When the president of one of the unions arose to make a preamble to the introduction of the speaker, the audience became restless. The hope that he would soon finish enforced attention. The stranger, noting the faces surrounding him, listened to his pre decessor. With his hat and cape removed, the man looked like an American. Yet he might easily have been a Frenchman or German, altho he was a perfect type of no one race. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Appeal Socialist Classics The pamphlets in this series are composed, in the main, of selections from the published work of Socialist writers, mostly of the present day. In some of them, particularly "Socialist Documents" and "Socialism and Government," the writings used are mainly of collective, rather than individual authorship; while the Historical Sketch is the composition of the editor. To the selections given, the editor has added explanatory and connecting paragraphs, welding the fragments into a coherent whole. The aim is the massing together in concise and systematic form, of what has been most clearly and pertinently said, either by individual Socialist writers or by committees speaking for the party as a whole, on all of the main phases of Socialism. In their finished form they might, with some appropriateness, be termed mosaics: each pamphlet is an arrangement of parts from many sources according to a unitary design. Most of the separate pieces are, however, in the best sense classics: they are expressions of Socialist thought which, by general approval, have won authoritative rank. A classic, according to James Russell Lowell, is of itself "something neither ancient nor modern"; even the most recent writing may be considered classic if, for the mood it depicts or the thought it frames, it unites matter and style into an expression of approved merit. For the choice of selections the editor is alone responsible. Doubtless for some of the subjects treated another editor would have chosen differently. The difficulty indeed has been in deciding what to omit; for the mass of Socialist literature contains much that may be rightly called classic which obviously could not have been included in these brief volumes. The pamphlets in the series are as follows: 1. The Elements of Socialism. 2. The Science of Socialism, 3. Socialism: A Historical Sketch. 4. Socialist Documents. 5. Socialism and Government. 6. Questions and Answers. 7. Socialism and Organized Labor. 8. Socialism and the Farmer. 9. Socialism and Social Reform. 10. The Tactics of Socialism. 11. The Socialist Appeal. 12. Socialism in Verse. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Larger Socialism The Socialist remedy for the ills which confront society is, of course, the public ownership and the democratic management of all industry of social value. On the whole, the answer is definite and positive. True, the Socialist ranks harbor various opinions as to what constitutes democratic management. One camp maintains that the Socially-valuable industries, after becoming publicly-owned, should be operated by the Government. Another camp, feeling more compellingly the call of syndicalism and guild socialism, would have the publicly-owned industries operated primarily by their workers. For years the retail price had been $5 a ton. I suppose that few persons in the worst of the East Side tenement houses had ever bought at one time a ton of coal. For one reason, there was no place to put it; and for another the average tene ment dweller never had at one time $5 to expend on coal. Universally, the poorest bought their coal at the corner grocery, a pailful at a time. There the price was ten cents for a pailful. When this was translated into ton weights it meant that they were buying coal at the rate of $15 a ton. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. If he is content, he must either be blind or live far remote from our main centres of population. Let him visit the nearest industrial city and then defend, if he can, the system which brings such places into existence. Our industrial cities produce the wealth which is necessary to modern civilization; and what sinks of misery they are! Everyone detests them, except perhaps the capitalists who grow rich there. What English family would choose to live in Sheffield or Wolverhampton, still less in that full-blown growth of competitive commercialism, the East End of London? The material evils of our system are gross and palpable, and have made us a byword of reproach throughout the world. But corresponding to them there is also a spiritual mischief, which is even more deplorable to a thoughtful mind; a low morality, which is not confined to the poor people who live in the slums but spreads corruptingly through every rank and class of the community. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socialism in Thought and Action In the year 1900, a student would have searched American literature in vain for any adequate expression of socialism written by a sympathetic student of the subject in this country, and published by a non-socialist publishing house. From that year until the outbreak of the European war, however, volume after volume issued from the press and, by the summer of 1914, practically every phase of socialist theory and tactics had been carefully treated. Since the first of August, 1914, revolutionary changes have taken place in the socialist movement and philosophy. In many countries socialist theory, for the first time, under the most difficult circumstances, has been brought face to face with reality, and the socialist movement has evolved from a small, minority group to a powerful factor in the life of the people. The war has given a great impetus to the guild socialist idea, with its emphasis on producers' control of industry and its insistence on the development of personality as the ultimate goal of society. It has afforded world-wide publicity to the soviet form of the state, with its demand for occupational representation and its temporary "dictatorship of the proletariat." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socialists and Socialism If you have no decided preference as to what part of the Socialist capon shall be put on your plate, I'll begin with young Robert Hunter. Young Robert is the Socialist leader who worked a get-rich-quick scheme by marrying a millionaire's daughter, - after which he published a book on Poverty, and began to wear pink socks. The Socialists run a daily screecher in New York City, and instead of naming it something reasonable, they christened it the Call. Young Robert Hunter (whom I know and dote on) had a piece in the Call recently, which reads this way. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Socialist Movement In a rude and violent state of society it continually happens that the person who has capital is not the very person who has saved it, but someone who, being stronger, or belonging to a more powerful community, has possessed himself of it by plunder. And even in a state of things in which property was protected, the increase of capital has usually been, for a long time, mainly derived from privations which, though essentially the same with saving, are not generally called by that name, because not voluntary. The actual producers have been slaves, compelled to produce as much as force could extort from them, and to consume as little as the self-interest or the usually very slender humanity of their taskmasters would permit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Socialist There are as many social degrees in the peerage as there are in the middle and lower classes. There are barons who are greater noblemen than earls, viscounts who are welcomed in a society that some marquises can never hope to enter - it is a question not of wealth or celebrity, but of family relationships and date of creation. When, however, a man is a duke in England, his state is so lofty, he is so inevitably apart from every one else that these remarks hardly apply at all. Yet even in dukedoms one recognises there are degrees. There are royal dukes, stately figureheads moving in the brilliant light which pours from the throne, and generally a little obscured by its refulgence. These have their own serene place and being. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Socialist Argument The questions which today are pressing most earnestly for solution are those relating to Economics; they are occupying the attention of every thoughtful mind. Owing to the complex nature of our civilization these questions are considerably involved, and unless serious and prolonged study is given them they re main confusing, if not apparently insolvable. How ever, a thorough and unbiased study of the funda mental economic principles involved reveals not only the imperative necessity of an industrial democracy, but also Shows that Socialism is the widest possible application of common sense to human relationships. It is well to recognize the fact that, into whatever social state a people are born, that people are in a degree environed by a web of customs, beliefs, tradi tions, laws, etc., which tend to bind them to the past and to, prejudice them against it ovations. As we ac quaint ourselves with the law of development, how ever, we must recognize that this law is constantly Operative not only in the inorganic and the organic worlds, but in social affairs as well. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1907 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER IX PUBLIC HEALTH THE public health question is mainly a housing question, as to which the Socialist view is definite, and well known to all who have taken the trouble to inquire. It is all a matter of shortage of supply, which, from the public health point of view, may exist, even while there are many unlet houses in the city; because those available, and a still larger number, unfortunately tenanted, are not in the least fitted for occupation. Indeed, I know of no town or city without a serious scarcity of housing accommodation, and people can only delude themselves into thinking otherwise by taking it for granted that of existing houses the majority are as they should be, which is far from being the case. If the health of the people were really our first consideration, as by sheer force of habit we accustom ourselves to think it, then probably 25 per cent, of the present dwellings--in any town not of recent growth, and perhaps in others also--would have to be superseded, and in all probability another 25 per cent, would only be deemed fitting homes for the people after improvement by considerable alteration. Consistently with my original intention, as mentioned at the beginning of this book, I refrain from indulging in flights of fancy on this subject, as on others already dealt with, or I might have suggested a delightful scheme of rebuilding my city on Garden City lines, every detail prearranged and mapped out, to be materialised on a new site. Such a scheme, after all the thought given to the subject in recent years, might win the approval of a section of the public, others would criticise and show a better way--on paper; a larger number would be simply indifferent. To existing cities neither the possibilities of such a...
