And even this psycholog ical attempt is itself directed, not into the labyrinths of individual motime and mental experience, but outward upon social interactions and consequences. Furthermore, we are concerned here with the social sig nificance of a particular attitude and policy on the part of individ uals and groups. This attitude is herein.called passive resistance, and is perhaps sufficiently well understood for the present purpose, although.it will very soon require careful analysis and definition.1 Passive resistancecalls to the mind of the general reader certain queer people who refuse to fight or go to war, and whose eccentricity is looked upon as a sort of aimable weakness, so long as it does not assume proportions embarrassing to the coercive or military enter prises of the State. This last consideration emphasizes the essen tially sociological nature of the present inquiry. Passive resistance is primarily a form of personal reaction to social environment, and by virtue of this very fact it is, at one and the same moment, an intense ly individualistic experience and a superlatively important social phenomenon. CHAPTER II THE HISTORY OF PASSIVE RESISTANCE: PHILOSOPHERS AND TEACHERS A glance at the list1of the sects whose names have become synonyms for passive resistance will reveal the fact that, without exception, they belong to the Aryan race, the European continent, and the Christian religion. But, although this is undeniably true as regards those organized movements that have played such a prominent part in modern history, the question naturally arises whether the generalization holds true simply because of our limited knowledge of history, or represents a genuine localization in time and space. The available evidence will probably show that the western sects were only slightly influenced by one another in their original enunciation of the doctrine. Hence it appears to have been a spontaneously generated ethical movement within the various parts of Christendom, But despite this independent origin, the question remains whether the limitation of the organized movement to European Christendom was not after all due to general environing conditions of race, religion, and social institutions common to all the various Christian sects. He was mentor and personal friend to one of us, and his work had a profound intellectual influence on both of us. We were both strongly influenced by Thibaut's insightful articulation of the importance to psychology of the concept of pro cedural justice and by his empirical work with Laurens Walker in reactions to legal institu demonstrating the role of procedural justice tions. The great importance we accord the Thibaut and Walker work is evident throughout this volume. If anyone person can be said to have created an entire field of inquiry, John Thibaut created the psychological study of procedural justice. (To honor Thibaut thus in no sense reduces our recognition of the contributions of his co-worker, Laurens Walker, in the creation of the field. We are as certain that Walker would endorse our statement as we are that Thibaut, with characteristic modesty, would demur from it. ) Even to praise Thibaut in this fashion falls short of recognizing all of his contributions to procedural justice. Not only did he initiate the psy chological study of the topic, he also built much of the intellectual foun dation upon which the study of procedural justice rests. Thibaut's work with Harold Kelley (1959; Kelley & Thibaut, 1978) created a social psy chological theory of interdependence that, among many other applica tions, serves as the basis for one of the major models of the psychology of procedural justice.
