Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Commodified and Criminalized examines the centrality of sport to discussions of racial ideologies and racist practices in the 21st century. It disputes familiar refrains of racial progress, arguing that athletes sit in a contradictory position masked by the logics of new racism and dominant white racial frames. Contributors discuss athletes ranging from Tiger Woods and Serena Williams to Freddy Adu and Shani Davis. Through dynamic case studies, Commodified and Criminalized unpacks the conversation between black athletes and colorblind discourse, while challenging the assumptions of contemporary sports culture. The contributors in this provocative collection push the conversation beyond the playing field and beyond the racial landscape of sports culture to explore the connections between sports representations and a broader history of racialized violence.

Many of these children were abused and witnessed traumatic experiences, their close relatives and neighbours being executed in cold blood. This study was guided by three critical questions: i) who are the Zimbabwean refugee learners? ii) what were Zimbabwean refugee learners’ migration experiences? and iii) what were Zimbabwean refugee learners’ school experiences? The study employed Bronfenbrenner’s Social Ecological Model as its overarching theoretical framework. Each stage of the refugee experience was described at each point in time.

Book Synopsis Narrating the NBA by : Lukasz Muniowski
Download or read book Narrating the NBA written by Lukasz Muniowski and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-04-20 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes career narratives of selected prominent NBA players after the Michael Jordan era, understood as the time after his second retirement in January 1999. It was a pivotal time for the league, as Jordan became synonymous with NBA basketball and the face of its global expansion. The players discussed in the book have been selected because of the significance of their career narratives, as all of them correspond with certain archetypes, prevalent in the world of not only professional basketball, but professional sports in general. The private and public personas of eight players as well as their depiction by the media are analyzed not only regarding their success on the basketball court, but also in light of what they have come to represent for the modern NBA. The players discussed in this book are Shaquille O’Neal, Alonzo Mourning, Vin Baker, Allen Iverson, Antoine Walker, Steve Nash, Tim Duncan, and Kobe Bryant. Collectively, these eight players embody the distinguishing character profiles and career arcs of sports superstars with dominance, individualism, and athleticism being as much a part of sports star culture as egotism, injuries, boredom, addiction, and bankruptcy.
Download or read book Play Like a Girl written by Ellie Roscher and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-07-18 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up and living in Kibera, Kenya, Abdul Kassim was well aware of the disproportionate number of challenges faced by women due to the extreme gender inequalities that persist in the slums. After being raised by his aunts, mother, and grandmother and having a daughter himself, he felt that he needed to make a difference. In 2002, Abdul started a soccer team for girls called Girls Soccer in Kibera (GSK), with the hope of fostering a supportive community and providing emotional and mental support for the young women in the town. The soccer program was a success, but the looming dangers of slum life persisted, and the young women continued to fall victim to the worst kinds of human atrocities. Indeed, it was the unyielding injustice of these conditions that led Abdul to the conclusion that soccer alone was not enough to create the necessary systemic change. In 2006, after much work, the Kibera Girls Soccer Academy (KGSA) was established with their first class of 11 girls and 2 volunteer teachers. Today, KGSA is composed of 20 full-time staff, provides a host of artistic and athletic programs for more than 130 students annually, and continues to expand. By providing academics inside and outside of the classroom along with artistic and athletic opportunities, KGSA inspires the young women of Kibera to become advocates for change within their own communities and for Kenya as a whole. Play Like a Girl tells the KGSA story through Abdul’s voice and vision and the stories of key staff and students. It is written by Ellie Roscher who spent 2 summers doing research at KGSA and several years writing this book.

Book Synopsis The Battle Worth Fighting by : Julie Ann Allen
Download or read book The Battle Worth Fighting written by Julie Ann Allen and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2018-10-30 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we first become parents, we don’t imagine ever being single parents. Regardless, this is where we are. Instead of evaluating God’s love based on your circumstances, evaluate your circumstances through the lens of God’s love. This is what it is to co-parent your children with God. The Battle Worth Fighting is both a practical guide to approach the challenges of raising children in this current culture with the social influences they face, as well as a guide to spiritual development and growth for your children and you. Let God be the authoritative parent for your children. Establish the boundaries you know God is leading you to establish. Place your priorities where God is showing you to place them. Your prayer request is to hear his call and move in the direction he leads. This is a game changer. Instead of seeking the path to acclaim and earthly accomplishments, we seek what God values and wants for us and for our children. This is what provides the foundation for how you parent your children and who you teach them to turn to as the authority in their lives. God is calling us to invest in our children so they can become who God had in mind when he created them.

Yet societal expectations, cultural trends, and conflicting messages are creating what psychologist and researcher Stephen Hinshaw calls "the Triple Bind." Girls are now expected to excel at "girl skills," achieve "boy goals," and be models of female perfection, 100 percent of the time. Here, Dr. Hinshaw reveals key aspects of the Triple Bind, including • genes, hormones, and the role of biology in confronting the Triple Bind • overscheduled lives and how the high pressure to excel at everything sets girls up for crisis • how traditionally feminine qualities (such as empathy and self-awareness) can put girls at risk for anxiety, depression, and other disorders • the oversexualization of little girls, preteens, and teenagers • the reasons girls are channeling pressure into violence Combining moving personal stories with extensive research, Dr. Hinshaw provides tools for parents who want to empower their daughters to deal in healthy ways with today's pressures.
Download or read book Soccerwomen written by Gemma Clarke and published by Bold Type Books. This book was released on 2019-04-16 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Michelle Akers to Megan Rapinoe, bold and inspiring profiles of the pioneers, champions and future heroines of women's soccer around the world. Women's soccer has come a long way. The first organized games on record -- which took place three hundred years ago in the Scottish Highlands -- were exhibition matches, where single women played against married women while available men looked on, seeking a potential mate. Today, champions like Mia Hamm, Abby Wambach, Brazil's Marta and China's Sun Wen, have inspired girls around the world to pick up the beautiful game for love of the sport. Inevitably, given the hardships and discrimination they face, women who play soccer professionally are so much more than elite athletes. They are survivors, campaigners, political advocates, feminists, LGBTQ activists, working moms, staunch opponents of racial discrimination and inspirational role models for many. Based on original interviews with over 50 current and former players and coaches, this book celebrates these remarkable women and their achievements against all odds.
Book Synopsis Money, Power, Respect by : Macaela MacKenzie
Download or read book Money, Power, Respect written by Macaela MacKenzie and published by Seal Press. This book was released on 2023-06-27 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An inside look at how women athletes are leading the fight for equality—on and off the field Women’s sports receive a fraction of the airtime allotted for men’s sports, as well as a fraction of the marketing dollars, media coverage, and training resources. For every dollar that the NBA’s highest-paid player brings home, the WNBA’s highest-paid player earns just half a cent. But while misogyny in sports is particularly visible, it’s not unique. Women athletes face the same sexist barriers found in all career fields: the motherhood penalty, transphobia and misogynoir, underpromotion, and more. But women in sports are fighting back, debunking myths that women aren’t as skilled, competitive, or capable of generating revenue as men. Drawing on exclusive interviews with prominent athletes—including Allyson Felix, Megan Rapinoe, and Billie Jean King—journalist Macaela Mackenzie shows how women are using sports as a platform for change. As women athletes push for the same things all women want in their careers—money, power, and respect—their wins are showing the rest of us what’s possible in the fight for equality.
