Book Synopsis British Women Satirists in the Long Eighteenth Century by : Amanda Hiner
Download or read book British Women Satirists in the Long Eighteenth Century written by Amanda Hiner and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-04-07 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of innovative essays by leading scholars on eighteenth-century British women satirists showcases women's contributions to the satiric tradition and challenges the assumption that women were largely targets, rather than practitioners, of satire during the long eighteenth century. The essays examine women's satires across diverse genres, from the fable to the periodical, and attend to women writers' appropriation of a literary style and form often viewed as exclusively masculine. The introduction features a new theory of women's satire and proposes a framework for analyzing satiric techniques employed by women writers. Organized chronologically, the contributors' essays address a wide range of authors and explore the ways in which satiric writings by women engaged in contemporary cultural conversations, influencing assumptions about gender, sociability, politics, and literary practices. This inclusive yet tightly-focused collection formulates an innovative and provocative new feminist theory of satire.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Broadview Anthology of British Satire, 1660-1750 provides instructors and students with a thorough introduction to the highpoint of British literary satire. Reflecting current pedagogical practice and scholarship, the anthology presents works by thirty satirists, including eleven women. The contents are expansive: they include canonical, frequently taught texts, less anthologized works by major satirists, and works by writers who have been traditionally excluded from anthologies. Biographical headnotes, crisp footnotes, and carefully edited texts make the book suitable for use in both undergraduate and graduate classrooms. By turns raucous, piercing, acerbic, winking, vexatious, and sly, the satires in the anthology will provoke fresh, dynamic approaches to this crucial literary period.

Book Synopsis The Cultural Politics of Opera, 1720-1742 by : Thomas McGeary

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores the intersection of the world of opera, literature and partisan politics to show how Italian opera was put to use in the 'culture wars' of the day. This last of a trilogy of books on opera and politics in Britain examines the cultural politics of opera during the ministerial reign of Sir Robert Walpole from 1720 to 1742. The book explores the intersection of the world of opera, literature, and partisan politics to show how Italian opera - with its associations with the court, ministry and Britain's social-political elite - was put to use in the 'culture wars' of the day: how Italian opera was used for partisan political advantage; how political work could be accomplished by means of opera. It shows that attacks on opera had ulterior targets. The book surveys a range of often overlooked verse and prints to show how critique or satire of opera were a means for oppositional writers to delegitimize the Walpole ministry. Polemicists framed opera as a consequence of the corruption, luxury and False Taste generated by Walpole's ministry. It closes in the watershed year 1742: Handel had produced the last of his Italian operas the previous year, Walpole fell from power, and Alexander Pope published the last book of his Dunciad project.
Download or read book Arts and Arms written by M. John Cardwell and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protagonists featured include: William Pitt; Henry Fox; the Duke of Newcastle; Lord Bute; George II and III; and Britain's ally Frederick II of Prussia. By placing literary works in a close political context they test the accuracy of the information conveyed against the correspondence and memoirs of politicians and parliamentary debates. The degree to which literature not only recorded, but also helped to shape political attitudes, is explored by its interaction with these and other expressions of opinion, such as popular protest and extra-parliamentary initiatives.
