Book excerpt: Smuggling was rife in Britain between the seventeenth and mid-nineteenth centuries, and since then smugglers have come often to be romanticised as cheeky rogues – as highwaymen of the coasts and Robin Hood figures. The reality could be very different. Cut-throat businessmen determined to make a profit, many smugglers were prepared to use excessive force as often as they used cunning, and the officers whose job it was to apprehend them were regularly brutally intimidated into inaction. Trevor May explains who the smugglers were, what motivated them, where they operated, and how items ranging from barrels of brandy to boxes of tea would surreptitiously be moved inland under the noses of, and sometimes even in collusion with, the authorities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An assessment of the work of the contractors who were commissioned by the Victualling Board to provision the fleet in this period. Provisioning the fleet, and the army overseas, during the French Wars of 1793-1815 was a major undertaking. This book explains how the Victualling Board in London handled this enormous task, focusing in particular on contractors -that is the merchants and brokers, who provided a vast range of commodities including flour and biscuit, salt beef and pork, as well as huge quantities of fresh water and coal, and every other item needed. It shows how these merchants could be large or small concerns, and provides detailed case studies of different kinds of contractors, including examples of contractors based both in Britain and in the navy's overseas bases. The book demonstrates how, overall, the contracting system represented the mobilisation of a substantial part of the British economy for war; how the performance of contracting was effective, with little or no corruption; and how the contractors took considerable financial risks and made only reasonable margins. It assesses the performance of the Victualling Board, arguing that this was good, and that the problem in the major area of weakness - accounting - was quickly addressed following a major crisis in 1808-09. It concludes that this was "an impressive performance" by the state, but that the overwhelming advantage was the resilience of the market, and that it was "upon the success of the contractors that the war at sea was won." For most of his career, ROGER KNIGHT was on the staff of the National Maritime Museum, leaving as Deputy Director in 2000. Since then he has taught at the Greenwich Maritime Institute at the University of Greenwich, where he is currently Visiting Professor of Naval History. MARTIN WILCOX completed a doctorate in maritime history at the University of Hull, and has been employed as postdoctoral research fellow at Greenwich Maritime Institute since 2006.

Book excerpt: Hailed as “the John Grisham of Wall Street” by the New York Times, Christopher Reich returns to the world he knows so well--the dangerous, dazzling world of high finance and international intrigue. In this ingeniously crafted thriller, the bestselling author of Numbered Account and The First Billion introduces his most complex and engaging hero yet: forensic accountant Adam Chapel--and paints a frightening scenario where terrorism is big business and money is the ultimate weapon of war… The explosion that shatters the smart Parisian apartment reverberates around the globe. In an instant, a suspected terrorist is dead and half a million dollars has vanished. Within days, the CIA is certain it has found a connection between the dead man and a planned terrorist attack on U.S. soil. Determined to avert another 9/11, they have assembled an elite counterterrorist task force, code name: Blood Money. Its mission: to follow the money trail. Its secret weapon: forensic accountant Adam Chapel. A man who trusts numbers more than people, Chapel has his own reasons for wanting to get the job done-- four of his colleagues were killed in the Paris blast. Now Chapel is thrust back into the line of fire when he teams up with British intelligence agent Sarah Churchill. The two are assigned to hunt down a shadowy mastermind who is moving vast sums of money from country to country, from bank to bank, leaving no tracks--as he prepares for an Armaggedon of his own devising. As Chapel follows a disappearing money trail from Paris to Munich to the deserts of Saudi Arabia, Sarah uses her elite training to stalk the “shadow” and his elusive network. Meanwhile, their quarry is auditing their every move, laying a twisting trail of false clues and shocking surprises. With the clock ticking down, soon Chapel and Sarah have only days, hours, minutes to avert disaster as a master terrorist plots to unleash the first strike in a brilliantly orchestrated conspiracy--with an almost unimaginable goal. Hurtling us from the winding alleys of Pakistan to the elite banking houses of Europe, The Devil’s Banker creates an adrenaline-fueled world where following the money has never been more dangerous, and evil has never been harder to unmask.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some People Prefer Hotels gets its title from a grumpy old work colleague's comment when the author and his wife bought a motorhome. Whilst nervously driving to Cornwall for a week's holiday during the first heavy rainfall for months and the windscreen wipers stop working, it seemed he had a point. What with the rotten weather, wobbly toilet pan, temperamental showers and being cooped up in such a confined space with Monty, their faithful Border Terrier, surrounded by dripping wet weather gear and muddy boots, they start to think that buying a motorhome was the biggest mistake they’d ever made. Luckily the weather improves, but as they explore some of Cornwall's most idyllic and historic places, some for the first time and others they’d been to before, if something could go wrong, it generally did... As well as expressing his candid and crotchety observations about their campsite experiences and life in general, the author also goes on a personal inner journey as sentimental old memories were triggered off by his motorhome holiday. If you haven't already done so, you might just be tempted to buy a motorhome and likewise take to the road. ...Or, there again, you may prefer hotels!

Book excerpt: It’s 1781 and the war with the Colonies is not going well for the British. Admiral Rodney has raided the Dutch island of Saint Eustatius, taking a great fortune in confiscated treasure. He sends a large part of his fleet back to England as escorts for the treasure ship, causing severe consequences later when his ships are needed the most. Vice Admiral Lord Gilbert Anthony is recalled to England for a new assignment, and brings his squadron, including younger brother Captain Gabriel “Sir Gabe” Anthony, who has been given command of Ares, a French prize. She is a razee, a fast and a heavily armed forty-four gun frigate. While in England, Gabe’s life is threatened and he is aided by a homeless waif that he’d befriended. The boy is gravely wounded, and when he heals, Gabe’s uncle Dagan discovers the boy is more than he appears. The Foreign Services Secret Department requests that Gabe be assigned to them to transport their agents around the Caribbean. As he returns to Antigua, Gabe suddenly finds himself dealing with England’s spy network. Fighting the Americans, French, Spain, and now the Dutch puts his ship and crew to their biggest test ever. Can Gabe, as captain, stand the test!?
