Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Containing maps showing the distribution of emissions from atomic hydrogen, this is an important reference source for astronomers in many different fields of research.Atomic hydrogen, the principal component of the interstellar medium, was measured over a 5-year period using the 25-meter radio telescope of the NFRA. Displayed in several projections, each map corresponds to a particular velocity interval.A CD-ROM also accompanies the Atlas, and contains the entire dataset of the Leiden/Dwingeloo survey, color images in GIF format, and animations displaying the 3-dimensional data cube.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The previous Saas-Fee Advanced Course dedicated to the interstellar medium took place in 1972. The tremendous scientific advances that have occurred in this field since then, in particular owing to the availabihty of receivers working at completely unexplored wavelength bands, fuUy justified a new set of lectures. As a consequence, the members of the Swiss Society for Astrophysics and As tronomy voted that "The Galactic Interstellar Medium" should be the subject of the 1991 course. The 21st Saas Fee Advanced Course took place in Les Diablerets from 18 to 23 March 1991, gathering together about 80 participants from all over the world, but mostly from Europe. According to a rule that has proved to lead to success, but also to chal lenge the lecturers' energy, the format of a Saas-Fee Advanced Course consists traditionally of 28 lectures of 45 minutes which take place in the morning and late afternoon, leaving ample time for discussions, self-study, hiking or skiing. Despite the inordinate work load imposed, this year's lecturers felt that the subject was sufficiently dense to increase the lecture time by 1/3! This proved judicious and left more time for questions and discussions during the lectures.

Book excerpt: This is volume 5 of Planets, Stars and Stellar Systems, a six-volume compendium of modern astronomical research, covering subjects of key interest to the main fields of contemporary astronomy. This volume on “Galactic Structure and Stellar Populations”, edited by Gerard F. Gilmore, presents accessible review chapters on Stellar Populations, Chemical Abundances as Population Tracers, Metal-Poor Stars and the Chemical Enrichment of the Universe, The Stellar and Sub-Stellar Initial Mass Function of Simple and Composite Populations, The Galactic Nucleus, The Galactic Bulge, Open Clusters and Their Role in the Galaxy, Star Counts and the Nature of Galactic Thick Disk, The Infrared Galaxy, Interstellar PAHs and Dust, Galactic Neutral Hydrogen, High-Velocity Clouds, Magnetic Fields in Galaxies, Astrophysics of Galactic Charged Cosmic Rays, Gamma-Ray Emission of Supernova Remnants and the Origin of Galactic Cosmic Rays, Galactic Distance Scales, Globular Cluster Dynamical Evolution, Dynamics of Disks and Warps, Mass Distribution and Rotation Curve in the Galaxy, Dark Matter in the Galactic Dwarf Spheroidal Satellites, and History of Dark Matter in Galaxies. All chapters of the handbook were written by practicing professionals. They include sufficient background material and references to the current literature to allow readers to learn enough about a specialty within astronomy, astrophysics and cosmology to get started on their own practical research projects. In the spirit of the series Stars and Stellar Systems published by Chicago University Press in the 1960s and 1970s, each chapter of Planets, Stars and Stellar Systems can stand on its own as a fundamental review of its respective sub-discipline, and each volume can be used as a textbook or recommended reference work for advanced undergraduate or postgraduate courses. Advanced students and professional astronomers in their roles as both lecturers and researchers will welcome Planets, Stars and Stellar Systems as a comprehensive and pedagogical reference work on astronomy, astrophysics and cosmology.

Book excerpt: The timescale over which molecular clouds collapse to form stars is of intense scientific interest. It reflects the support mechanisms which slow collapse such as angular momentum, thermal pressure, turbulence, and ambipolar diffusion, and impacts the chemical make up of the resulting stars and surrounding planets. In this doctoral thesis we obtain lower age limits for a set of molecular clouds by studying the ratio between atomic and molecular hydrogen gas. Clouds are initially entirely, or almost entirely composed of atomic hydrogen (HI), but by the time they form stars they are almost entirely composed of molecular hydrogen (H2). We measure H2 column densities using 13 CO and dust extinction as tracers. In the clouds' interiors, the HI gas is sufficiently shielded from the external radiation field that it cools to temperatures of approximately 10K to 50K, at which point it can absorb the background 21 cm emission from the warm galactic ISM. This HI Narrow Self-Absorption (HINSA) is simple to observe, yet difficult to analyze due to the complexity of the background emission. We present a novel new method of analyzing HINSA spectra which for the first time offers sufficient confidence in the derived column densities that a more sophisticated analysis of the HI/H2 ratio in clouds could be undertaken. We have performed the largest survey of HINSA in clouds carried out to date using the Green Bank Telescope (GBT), and the Five College Radio Observatory (FCRAO). We establish HINSA as a useful tool, and with the large body of data acquired, can move to determine the ages of several clouds. We discovered that the observed HINSA column densities were highly dependent on the unknown shape and orientation of each cloud. Thus we developed a geometryindependent method of determining the density distribution function of molecular clouds. A geometry-independent chemical model then allowed us to determine the lower limits to the ages of 23 clumps within 9 molecular clouds.
