Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The income gap between women and men has gotten lots of attention in the last few decades: today women earn seventy-nine cents for every dollar men earn. But fewer people are aware of the much more serious wealth gap: for every dollar in wealth men own, women own thirty-two cents. Thirty-two cents! Wealth matters. Wealth is what gives us a financial safety net when we lose our jobs, break up a relationship or divorce, we or our dependents become sick, or when we are hit by some other financial crisis. It enables us to build security, to give our children a future, and to retire. It is passed from generation to generation, allowing wealthy families to stay wealthy over time. Wealth can generate income, whether through investments in the financial markets, or real estate, or through funding a startup business, and more. Significant wealth even allows us to influence our world by allowing us to contribute to political campaigns and policy initiatives. For these reasons, wealth is a better indicator of financial status than income: it reveals who is secure and influential and who is not. By treating women and men equally without recognizing the gross social and economic advantages that differentiate us, the law perpetuates the wealth gap. Here, Carla Spivack takes readers through a tour of a woman’s life stages and the property laws that may apply and hinder their financial independence. From living together to marriage, from divorce to inheritance, the circumstances invite unfair treatment that leaves women out in the cold. Understanding how to protect your assets, fight for what is fair, and increase financial security is increasingly important as the wage gap continues to flourish. Readers will learn about the laws that work against them and how to protect themselves regardless of their relationship status. For all women of all ages, here is your guide to keeping your wealth not matter how your relationship fares.

She paves the way for women, especially, to feel empowered in their life-choices which then allows them to make the best decisions for themselves and their family. This is a great guide for any woman who wants to be smart, empowered and conscious in the choices she makes in love, life and family.” —Dr. Shefali Tsabary NYT Bestselling Author of THE AWAKENED FAMILY GIVE AWAY YOUR HEART, but don’t lose your mind. Know the deal you’re getting into. Know that self-preservation is the key to a happy marriage— and a happy divorce. We don’t take a job expecting that we’ll hate it and quit. We don’t sign the lease on an apartment we’ll be sick of in six months, and we don’t enter into a relationship planning for the breakup. But the flip side is that we shouldn’t expect any relationship we enter into will save us from the responsibility of being self-sufficient. No matter where you are in the process—dating, engaged, married, contemplating separation, and divorce—if you can realize why you have to put yourself first, you’re halfway there. Whether you’re in the rapturous throes of endless love or the first moments of stomach-churning awareness that your marriage is falling apart, this book is for you. It’s for every woman who understands that self-preservation will not happen if you rely on someone else to save you. You need to maintain—or begin to establish— your personal independence and financial solvency if you want to be self-sufficient no matter what life throws at you. You can lean on someone, but you have to be able to stand on your own two feet at a moment’s notice, and that’s what this book is about.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A straightforward, all-incisive guide that alerts women to the pitfalls of a hasty decision "just to get it over with", Don't Settle for Less teaches women how to work within the system to improve the outcome of their divorce settlements. In our era of women’s equality in the home as well as the workplace, it is shocking that when it comes to divorce, women routinely encounter serious economic and emotional hardship while their ex-husbands enjoy increased prosperity. Beverly Pekala, an attorney with years of experience in family law, provides invaluable step-by-step counsel to offset this disparity. Along with other crucial revelations and strategies, Don’t Settle for Less tells women when and how they announce their decision to divorce can actually put them in a stronger legal position, how they must analyze the value of all marital property including the less obvious retirement benefits, pension plans, profit-sharing, and even the husband’s hidden assets, how those who choose to give up their careers to raise children can be awarded a settlement based on their reduced earning capacity, how understanding their rights as parents and the rights of their children will give them an advantage in child support, custody, and visitation negotiations, and well as how there are a myriad of important details to consider when deciding between going to trial versus settling out of court. With the understanding that knowledge is power, Beverly Pekala provides women with the ammunition they need to use an economically unfair system to their advantage.

Book excerpt: From Jane Austen to Taylor Swift, a look at the surprising politics of romantic love and its dissolution. Whatever the underlying motives – be they love, financial security, or mere masochism – the fact is that getting involved in a romantic partnership is emotionally, morally, and even politically fraught. In Hard To Do, Kelli María Korducki turns a Marxist lens on the relatively short history of romantic partnership, tracing how the socio-economic dynamics between men and women have transformed the ways women conceive of domestic partnership. With perceptive, reported insights on the ways marriage and divorce are legislated, the rituals of twentieth-century courtship, and contemporary practices for calling it off, Korducki reveals that, for all women, choosing to end a relationship is a radical action with very limited cultural precedent.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is music property? Under what circumstances can music be stolen? Such questions lie at the heart of Joanna Demers’s timely look at how overzealous intellectual property (IP) litigation both stifles and stimulates musical creativity. A musicologist, industry consultant, and musician, Demers dissects works that have brought IP issues into the mainstream culture, such as DJ Danger Mouse’s “Grey Album” and Mike Batt’s homage-gone-wrong to John Cage’s silent composition “4’33.” Demers also discusses such artists as Ice Cube, DJ Spooky, and John Oswald, whose creativity is sparked by their defiant circumvention of licensing and copyright issues. Demers is concerned about the fate of transformative appropriation—the creative process by which artists and composers borrow from, and respond to, other musical works. In the United States, only two elements of music are eligible for copyright protection: the master recording and the composition (lyrics and melody) itself. Harmony, rhythm, timbre, and other qualities that make a piece distinctive are virtually unregulated. This two-tiered system had long facilitated transformative appropriation while prohibiting blatant forms of theft. The advent of digital file sharing and the specter of global piracy changed everything, says Demers. Now, record labels and publishers are broadening the scope of IP “infringement” to include allusive borrowing in all forms: sampling, celebrity impersonation—even Girl Scout campfire sing-alongs. Paying exorbitant licensing fees or risking even harsher penalties for unauthorized borrowing have become the only options for some musicians. Others, however, creatively sidestep not only the law but also the very infrastructure of the music industry. Moving easily between techno and classical, between corporate boardrooms and basement recording studios, Demers gives us new ways to look at the tension between IP law, musical meaning and appropriation, and artistic freedom.
