Download or read book Written in Blood written by Layton Green and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A career homicide detective returns to his small hometown and is soon asked to investigate a series of local murders with a perverse literary twist. Detective Joe "Preach" Everson, a prison chaplain turned police officer, is coming home. After a decade tracking down killers in Atlanta, and with a reputation as one of the finest homicide detectives in the city, his career derailed when he suffered a mental breakdown during the investigation of a serial killer who was targeting children. No sooner does Preach arrive at home in Creekville, North Carolina--a bohemian community near Chapel Hill--than a local bookstore owner is brutally killed, the first murder in a decade. The only officer with homicide experience, Preach is assigned to the case and makes a shocking discovery: the bookstore owner has been murdered in exactly the same manner as the pawnbroker in Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment. With the help of Ariana Hale, a law student and bibliophile who knew the victim, Preach investigates the local writer's community. As their questions increase, a second body is found, this time eerily resembling the crime scene in a famous Edgar Allan Poe novella. Preach and Ariana realize that their adversary is an intelligent, literate killer with a mind as devious as it is disturbed. And one or both of them may be his next target.
Download or read book Confidence written by Ian Tuhovsky and published by Ian Tuhovsky. This book was released on 2016-05-26 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever considered how many opportunities you have missed and how many chances you have wasted by lacking self-confidence when you need it most? Have you ever given up on your plans, important goals, and dreams not because you just decided to focus on something else, but simply because you were too SCARED or hesitant to even start, or stick up to the plan and keep going? Are you afraid of starting your own business or asking for a promotion? Petrified of public speaking, socializing, dating, taking up new hobbies, or going to job interviews? Can you imagine how amazing and relieving it would feel to finally obtain all the self-esteem needed to accomplish things you've always wanted to achieve in your life? Finally, have you ever found yourself in a situation where you simply couldn’t understand WHY you acted in a certain way, or why you kept holding yourself back and feeling all the bad emotions, instead of just going for what’s the most important to you? Due to early social conditioning and many other influences, most people on this planet are already familiar with all these feelings. WAY TOO FAMILIAR! I know how it feels, too. I was in the same exact place. And then, I found the way! It's high time you did something about it too because, truth be told, self-confident people just have it way easier in every single aspect of life! From becoming your own boss or succeeding in your career, through dating and socializing, to starting new hobbies, standing up for yourself or maybe finally packing your suitcase and going on this Asia trip you promised yourself decades ago… All too often, people fail in these quests as they aren’t equipped with the natural and lasting self-confidence to deal with them in a proper way. Confidence is not useful only in everyday life and casual situations. Do you really want to fulfill your wildest dreams, or do you just want to keep chatting about them with your friends, until one day you wake up as a grumpy, old, frustrated person? Big achievements require brave and fearless actions. If you want to act bravely, you need to be confident. Along with lots of useful, practical exercises, this book will provide you with plenty of new information that will help you understand what confidence problems really come down to. And this is the most important and the saddest part, because most people do not truly recognize the root problem, and that’s why they get poor results. Lack of self-confidence and problems with unhealthy self-esteem are usually the reason why smart, competent, and talented people never achieve a satisfying life; a life that should easily be possible for them. In this book, you will read about: -How, when, and why society robs us all of natural confidence and healthy self-esteem. -What kind of social and psychological traps you need to avoid in order to feel much calmer, happier, and more confident. -What “natural confidence” means and how it becomes natural. -What “self-confidence” really is and what it definitely isn’t (as opposed to what most people think!). -How your mind hurts you when it really just wants to help you, and how to stop the process. -What different kinds of fear we feel, where they come from, and how to defeat them. -How to have a great relationship with yourself. -How to use stress to boost your inner strength. -Effective and ineffective ways of building healthy self-esteem. -Why the relation between self-acceptance and stress is so crucial. -How to stay confident in professional situations. -How to protect your self-esteem when life brings you down, and how to deal with criticism and jealousy. -How to use neuro-linguistic programming, imagination, visualizations, diary entries, and your five senses to re-program your subconscious and get rid of “mental viruses” and detrimental beliefs that actively destroy your natural confidence and healthy self-esteem.
Book Synopsis Lying Wonders by : Susan Rogers Cooper
Download or read book Lying Wonders written by Susan Rogers Cooper and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Milt Kovak, sheriff of Oklahoma’s Prophesy County, has been missing from the bookshelves for too long a time. Readers who have developed a friendship with this down-to-earth hero will be delighted to find the lawman back at the old stand and, as Kirkus Reviews has described him, “ever more simpatico.” Milt has married and has a toddler son. Then one day, Milt receives a terrified phone call from Laura Johnson, an old girlfriend who broke his heart. Laura’s teenage son, Trent, went on a religious retreat of some kind with his girlfriend Amanda and has not returned. Since the dubious “church” is in Milt’s county, Laura wants him to look into young Trent and Amanda’s whereabouts. What Milt finds is more than enough to alarm a mother. On the other side of a fence around the farmland deeded to the cult, Milt sees vultures circling over something in the grass. Hoping it’s a cow, Milt dares the barbed wire and a suspicious bull, to find instead the body of Amanda. Milt’s investigation is barred at every turn by “Brother Grigsby,” his wife, and their mostly female followers (an amazing number of whom are pregnant). Meanwhile, Laura is a shrieking hysteric, and Milt’s niece sneaks incognito into the compound to do some detecting of her own. Cooper’s stories always strike a fine balance of humor and solid suspense, and her characters are as real as the neighbors down the street, although their antics are more entertaining. Milt Kovak’s return is a real treat.

Book Synopsis The Hypocrisy of Disco by : Clane Hayward
Download or read book The Hypocrisy of Disco written by Clane Hayward and published by Chronicle Books. This book was released on 2012-11-09 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This memoir of girlhood among California’s hippie communities is an “offbeat tale of preadolescence [written] with remarkable honesty and respect” (Publishers Weekly). Born in San Francisco just before the Summer of Love, Clane Hayward grew up on hippie communes throughout the west. Her poignantly funny, sometimes melancholy, and always riveting memoir recounts her extraordinary life up until her thirteenth birthday. School was a particularly happy event—it meant a hot lunch and clothes that matched! But Clane’s mother warned her that schools are just zoos run by the government. From a world of complex relationships, uncertain rules, and constant surprises, Clane forged a childhood. She did it sometimes with, sometimes without, her bong-puffing, Buddha-quoting, macrobiotic mother and her wild-haired, redneck father. Hypocrisy of Disco is an honest, direct, and truly unforgettable tale, and a tribute to the resilience of youth.
