Book excerpt: Late one night Fiona and Jack, after a long day in the sun, were sound asleep when they were suddenly awakened by wild, frightening, almost bloodcurdling screams. Although Fiona is much braver than Jack, she, on this occasion, was very much alarmed while Jack was very calm. He had heard those screams before. They were made by a barred owl, also frequently referred to as a hoot owl. The owl seemed to scream these words, "Whoooooo cooooooks for youuuuuu? Whoooooo cooooooks for youuuuuu?" According to an old wives' tale common to the South Carolina coastal area, this owl arrives screaming in the neighborhood on the night when someone has just been murdered in the vicinity. The fact that on one particular night the owl arrives screaming its best when no one seems to have been murdered nearby provides a very important clue that helps our investigators identify the killer.

Book excerpt: The Sketching Detective, by Jack McCormac, is a detective novel for the twenty-first century, full of surprises, wit, and intelligence. Jack McKay, a university professor, is going to put his unlikely detective skills to use once again after solving the case of the murdered showgirl--and almost ending his marriage. This time, the doubting police chief, Fat Joe, asks for Jack's help in uncovering the murderer of Sam Campbell, a grouchy, miserly neighbor of Jack's. Jack wants to refuse to help the police on this case because of the trouble working on the previous case caused him but his wife, the lovely and feisty Fiona, demands that Jack help the police, if for no other reason than to clear her brother, Bob, of the mounting suspicion against him. In an effort to win Fiona back, or at least get her to move back into their home, Jack puts all his efforts into solving Sam's murder and clearing Bob's name. Jack and Fiona's whole neighborhood tries to get in on to finding the murderer too, causing a number of mishaps, and even more surprises. After navigating the many twists and turns of the plot of the sketching detective and discovering the truth behind Sam's dark past, Jack uncovers, using his unlikely sketching ability and a fair share dumb luck and charm, the true identity of the murderer--and it could not be more surprising. Readers of all ages will delight in the wonderfully intelligent, devilishly, charming, and delightfully intriguing adventures of Jack McKay.

Book excerpt: Trudell "Tru" Becket finds herself in a bind when her library in lovely Cypress, South Carolina, is turned into a state-of-the-art bookless "technological center." She decides to rescue hundreds of books slated for the town dump, and along with her best friends-coffee shop owner Tori Green and author Flossie Finnegan-Baker, sets up a secret bookroom in the library's basement. When the town manager, who was behind the big push for the library's transformation, is crushed by an overturned shelf of DVDs, Tru becomes the prime suspect. Faster than you can say "Shhhh!" Tru quickly finds herself on the same page with a killer who would love to write her final chapter. -- adapted from publisher info.

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A modern classic of true crime, set in a most beguiling Southern city—now in a 30th anniversary edition with a new afterword by the author “Elegant and wicked . . . might be the first true-crime book that makes the reader want to book a bed and breakfast for an extended weekend at the scene of the crime.”—The New York Times Book Review Shots rang out in Savannah’s grandest mansion in the misty, early morning hours of May 2, 1981. Was it murder or self-defense? For nearly a decade, the shooting and its aftermath reverberated throughout this hauntingly beautiful city of moss-hung oaks and shaded squares. In this sharply observed, suspenseful, and witty narrative, John Berendt skillfully interweaves a hugely entertaining first-person account of life in this isolated remnant of the Old South with the unpredictable twists and turns of a landmark murder case. It is a spellbinding story peopled by a gallery of remarkable characters: the well-bred society ladies of the Married Woman’s Card Club; the turbulent young gigolo; the hapless recluse who owns a bottle of poison so powerful it could kill every man, woman, and child in Savannah; the aging and profane Southern belle who is the “soul of pampered self-absorption”; the uproariously funny drag queen; the acerbic and arrogant antiques dealer; the sweet-talking, piano-playing con artist; young people dancing the minuet at the black debutante ball; and Minerva, the voodoo priestess who works her magic in the graveyard at midnight. These and other Savannahians act as a Greek chorus, with Berendt revealing the alliances, hostilities, and intrigues that thrive in a town where everyone knows everyone else. Brilliantly conceived and masterfully written, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil is a sublime and seductive reading experience.

Book excerpt: Amelia is 14 years old. In many ways, she is your average American teenager: since she was three years old, she has been her mother's muse, and the subject of her photographs. However, not every mom is a world-class photographer with a predilection for photographing animals. And it's not every teenager who has portraits of herself with elephants, llamas, ponies, tigers, kangaroos, chimpanzees and endless dogs, cats, and other animals--portraits that hang in the collections of major art museums around the world. Amelia and the Animals is Robin Schwartz's second monograph featuring this collaborative series dedicated to documenting her and Amelia's adventures among the animals. As Schwartz puts it, "Photography is a means for Amelia to meet animals. Until recently, she took these opportunities for granted. She didn't realize how unusual her encounters were until everyone started to tell her how lucky she was to meet so many animals." Nonetheless, these images are more than documents of Amelia and her rapport with animals; they offer a meditation on the nature of interspecies communication and serve as evidence of a shared mother-daughter journey into invented worlds. Robin Schwartz (born 1957) earned an MFA in photography from Pratt Institute, and her photographs are held in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Museum of Modern Art, in New York; Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C.; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Brooklyn Museum; Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk, Virginia; Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris; and Museum Folkwang, Essen, Germany. She is an assistant professor of photography at William Paterson University and lives in New Jersey with her husband, Robert Forman, daughter, Amelia, and five companion animals.
